Dust and dark Gamma-Ray Bursts: mutual implications
In a cosmological context dust has been always poorly understood. That is
true also for the statistic of GRBs so that we started a program to understand
its role both in relation to GRBs and in function of z. This paper presents a
composite model in this direction. The model considers a rather generic
distribution of dust in a spiral galaxy and considers the effect of changing
some of the parameters characterizing the dust grains, size in particular. We
first simulated 500 GRBs distributed as the host galaxy mass distribution,
using as model the Milky Way. If we consider dust with the same properties as
that we observe in the Milky Way, we find that due to absorption we miss about
10% of the afterglows assuming we observe the event within about 1 hour or even
within 100s. In our second set of simulations we placed GRBs randomly inside
giants molecular clouds, considering different kinds of dust inside and outside
the host cloud and the effect of dust sublimation caused by the GRB inside the
clouds. In this case absorption is mainly due to the host cloud and the
physical properties of dust play a strong role. Computations from this model
agree with the hypothesis of host galaxies with extinction curve similar to
that of the Small Magellanic Cloud, whereas the host cloud could be also
characterized by dust with larger grains. To confirm our findings we need a set
of homogeneous infrared observations. The use of coming dedicated infrared
telescopes, like REM, will provide a wealth of cases of new afterglow

Topological Twistons in Crystalline Polyethylene
We introduce an alternate model to describe twistons in crystalline
polyethylene. The model couples torsional and longitudinal degrees of freedom
and appears as an extension of a model that describes only the torsional
motion. We find exact solutions that describe stable topological twistons, in
good agreement with the torsional and longitudinal interactions in

Integral results on GRB030320: a long gamma-ray burst detected at the edge of the field of view
GRB030320 is the 5th Gamma-ray burst (GRB) detected by INTEGRAL in the field
of view (FoV). It is so far the GRB with the largest off-axis angle with
respect to the INTEGRAL pointing direction, near to the edge of the FoV of both
main instruments, IBIS and SPI. Nevertheless, it was possible to determine its
position and to extract spectra and fluxes. The GRB nature of the event was
confirmed by an IPN triangulation. It is a ~ 60 s long GRB with two prominent
peaks separated by ~ 35 s. The spectral shape of the GRB is best represented by
a single power law with a photon index Gamma ~ 1.7. The peak flux in the 20 -
200 keV band is determined to ~ 5.7 photons cm-2 s-1 and the GRB fluence to 1.1
x 10-5 erg cm-2. Analysing the spectral evolution of the GRB, a
``hard-to-soft'' behaviour emerges. A search for an optical counterpart has

Recherches sur le rapport entre le flux de sève, la transpiration et la vigueur dans la vigne selon le mode de conduite
La recherche s'est deroulee surune période de deux ans (1995-96) et a été mise en oeuvre dans une zone viticole de plaine de l'Italie du nord-est . Dans un vignoble éxperimental de Tocai friulano et de Chardonnay, nous avons comparé deux systèmes de conduite, l'un à végétation ascendante et l'autre à végétation retombante, dans le but d'analyser les éventuelles relations entre l'activité vegetative et la transpiration. Les resultats ont mis en evidence que les vignes du système retombant presentent une activite vegetative et un flux de transpiration plus bas, alors que les vignes du système ascendant ont une activité végétative et un flux de transpiration plus élevés . La recherche a démontre que la transpiration peut expliquer de facon déterminante le développement végétatif différent observé dans les deux systémes de conduite.Research on the relationship between sap flow, transpiration and vigour of grapevine with regard to the trellis systemThis trial was carried out in a viticultural area of northeastern Italy, during 1995 and 1996. In a Tocai friulano and Chardonnay vineyard, we compared two training systems: single curtain with downward-oriented shoots and spur cordon with upward-oriented shoots. The results emphasize that in vines with downward-oriented shoots vegetative growth and sap flow are lower than in upward-oriented shoots and, moreover, that the rate of transpiration can explain the differences in vigour and vegetative development
GRB 070311: a direct link between the prompt emission and the afterglow
We present prompt gamma-ray, early NIR/optical, late optical and X-ray
observations of the peculiar GRB 070311 discovered by INTEGRAL, in order to
gain clues on the mechanisms responsible for the prompt gamma-ray pulse as well
as for the early and late multi-band afterglow of GRB 070311. We fitted with
empirical functions the gamma-ray and optical light curves and scaled the
result to the late time X-rays. The H-band light curve taken by REM shows two
pulses peaking 80 and 140 s after the peak of the gamma-ray burst and possibly
accompanied by a faint gamma-ray tail. Remarkably, the late optical and X-ray
afterglow underwent a major rebrightening between 3x10^4 and 2x10^5 s after the
burst with an X-ray fluence comparable with that of the prompt emission
extrapolated in the same band. Notably, the time profile of the late
rebrightening can be described as the combination of a time-rescaled version of
the prompt gamma-ray pulse and an underlying power law. This result supports a
common origin for both prompt and late X-ray/optical afterglow rebrightening of
GRB 070311 within the external shock scenario. The main fireball would be
responsible for the prompt emission, while a second shell would produce the
rebrightening when impacting the leading blastwave in a refreshed shock

Age determination of the HR8799 planetary system using asteroseismology
Discovery of the first planetary system by direct imaging around HR8799 has
made the age determination of the host star a very important task. This
determination is the key to derive accurate masses of the planets and to study
the dynamical stability of the system. The age of this star has been estimated
using different procedures. In this work we show that some of these procedures
have problems and large uncertainties, and the real age of this star is still
unknown, needing more observational constraints. Therefore, we have developed a
comprehensive modeling of HR8799, and taking advantage of its gamma
Doradus-type pulsations, we have estimated the age of the star using
asteroseismology. The accuracy in the age determination depends on the rotation
velocity of the star, and therefore an accurate value of the inclination angle
is required to solve the problem. Nevertheless, we find that the age estimate
for this star previously published in the literature ([30,160] Myr) is
unlikely, and a more accurate value might be closer to the Gyr. This
determination has deep implications on the value of the mass of the objects
orbiting HR8799. An age around 1 Gyr implies that these objects are

A flash in the dark: UVES/VLT high resolution spectroscopy of GRB afterglows
We present the first high resolution (R=20000--45000, corresponding to 14
km/s at 4200A to 6.6 km/s at 9000A) observations of the optical afterglow of
Gamma Ray Bursts. GRB020813 and GRB021004 were observed by UVES@VLT 22.19 hours
and 13.52 hours after the trigger, respectively. These spectra show that the
inter--stellar matter of the GRB host galaxies is complex, with many components
contributing to each main absorption system, and spanning a total velocity
range of up to about 3000 km/s. Several narrow components are resolved down to
a width of a few tens of km/s. In the case of GRB021004 we detected both low
and high ionization lines. Combined with photoionization results obtained with
CLOUDY, the ionization parameters of the various systems are consistent with a
remarkably narrow range with no clear trend with system velocity. This can be
interpreted as due to density fluctuations on top of a regular R^-2 wind

Impaired testicular signaling of vitamin A and vitamin K contributes to the aberrant composition of the extracellular matrix in idiopathic germ cell aplasia
Objective: To study pathogenic features of the somatic testicular microenvironment associated with idiopathic germ cell aplasia. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Tertiary referral center for reproductive medicine. Patient(s): Testicular specimens from men with idiopathic nonobstructive azoospermia (iNOA) prospectively submitted to microdissection testicular sperm extraction. Of 20 specimens used for histology, 10 were also available for proteomic analysis. Primary Sertoli cells with normal karyotype and phenotype were also used. Intervention(s): Patients with iNOA were dichotomized according to a positive versus negative sperm retrieval at microdissection testicular sperm extraction, and on the isolated extracellular matrix (ECM) the proteomic analysis was performed. Main Outcome Measure(s): Proteomic analysis of the ECM from testicular specimens with positive versus negative sperm retrieval. Gene ontology enrichment was used to identify upstream regulators based on the 11 deregulated ECM proteins, which were validated by immunohistochemistry and quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Continuous variables were expressed as medians and interquartile range. Result(s): Germ cell aplasia was characterized by an increased signaling of the retinoic acid in Sertoli cells and associated with decreased expression of the basal membrane markers nidogen-2 and heparan sulfate proteoglycan-2. Decreased levels of the interstitial matrisome-associated factor IX and its regulator VKORC1 were, instead, coupled with decreased signaling of vitamin K in Leydig cells. An altered expression of a further eight ECM proteins was also found, including laminin-4 and laminin-5. Peripheral levels of the two vitamins were within the reference range in the two cohorts of iNOA men. Conclusion(s): We identified the pathogenetic signature of the somatic human testicular microenvironment, providing two vitamin-related mechanistic insights related to the molecular determinants of the idiopathic germ cell aplasia
