Geologic and mineral and water resources investigations in western Colorado, using Skylab EREP data
The author has identified the following significant results. Skylab photographs are superior to ERTS images for photogeologic interpretation, primarily because of improved resolution. Lithologic contacts can be detected consistently better on Skylab S190A photos than on ERTS images. Color photos are best; red and green band photos are somewhat better than color-infrared photos; infrared band photos are worst. All major geologic structures can be recognized on Skylab imagery. Large folds, even those with very gentle flexures, can be mapped accurately and with confidence. Bedding attitudes of only a few degrees are recognized; vertical exaggeration factor is about 2.5X. Mineral deposits in central Colorado may be indicated on Skylab photos by lineaments and color anomalies, but positive identification of these features is not possible. S190A stereo color photography is adequate for defining drainage divides that in turn define the boundaries and distribution of ground water recharge and discharge areas within a basin
Soft Listeria: actin-based propulsion of liquid drops
We study the motion of oil drops propelled by actin polymerization in cell
extracts. Drops deform and acquire a pear-like shape under the action of the
elastic stresses exerted by the actin comet. We solve this free boundary
problem and calculate the drop shape taking into account the elasticity of the
actin gel and the variation of the polymerization velocity with normal stress.
The pressure balance on the liquid drop imposes a zero propulsive force if
gradients in surface tension or internal pressure are not taken into account.
Quantitative parameters of actin polymerization are obtained by fitting theory

Nonequilibrium Fluctuations, Travelling Waves, and Instabilities in Active Membranes
The stability of a flexible fluid membrane containing a distribution of
mobile, active proteins (e.g. proton pumps) is shown to depend on the structure
and functional asymmetry of the proteins. A stable active membrane is in a
nonequilibrium steady state with height fluctuations whose statistical
properties are governed by the protein activity. Disturbances are predicted to
travel as waves at sufficiently long wavelength, with speed set by the normal
velocity of the pumps. The unstable case involves a spontaneous, pump-driven
undulation of the membrane, with clumping of the proteins in regions of high

Anomalous fluctuations of active polar filaments
Using a simple model, we study the fluctuating dynamics of inextensible,
semiflexible polar filaments interacting with active and directed force
generating centres such as molecular motors. Taking into account the fact that
the activity occurs on time-scales comparable to the filament relaxation time,
we obtain some unexpected differences between both the steady-state and
dynamical behaviour of active as compared to passive filaments. For the
statics, the filaments have a {novel} length-scale dependent rigidity.
Dynamically, we find strongly enhanced anomalous diffusion.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Brownian Motors driven by Particle Exchange
We extend the Langevin dynamics so that particles can be exchanged with a
particle reservoir. We show that grand canonical ensembles are realized at
equilibrium and derive the relations of thermodynamics for processes between
equilibrium states. As an application of the proposed evolution rule, we devise
a simple model of Brownian motors driven by particle exchange. KEYWORDS:

Photographs are commonly taken of children in medical and research contexts. With the increased availability of photographs through the internet, it is increasingly important to consider their potential for negative consequences and the nature of any consent obtained. In this research we explore the issues around photography in low-resource settings, in particular concentrating on the challenges in gaining informed consent
Spontaneous Oscillations of Collective Molecular Motors
We analyze a simple stochastic model to describe motor molecules which
cooperate in large groups and present a physical mechanism which can lead to
oscillatory motion if the motors are elastically coupled to their environment.
Beyond a critical fuel concentration, the non-moving state of the system
becomes unstable with respect to a mode with angular frequency omega. We
present a perturbative description of the system near the instability and
demonstrate that oscillation frequencies are determined by the typical
