Bound entanglement in the XY model
We study the multi-spin entanglement for the 1D anisotropic XY model
concentrating on the simplest case of three-spin entanglement. As compared to
the pairwise entanglement, three-party quantum correlations have a longer range
and they are more robust on increasing the temperature.
We find regions of the phase diagram of the system where bound entanglement
occurs, both at zero and finite temperature. Bound entanglement in the ground
state can be obtained by tuning the magnetic field. Thermal bound entanglement
emerges naturally due to the effect of temperature on the free ground state

Infrared measurements of spacecraft glow planned for Spacelab 2
A liquid helium cooled infrared telescope (IRT) was to be flown in July 1985 on Spacelab 2. The instrument is designed to measure both diffuse and discrete infrared astronomical sources, including the zodiacal light, galactic, and extragalactic components, as well as to evaluate the induced Orbiter environment. The focal plane contains ten photoconductive detectors covering six broad bands from 2 to 120 microns. Each detector has a 0.5 by 1.0 deg field of view optimized for detection of extended sources of IR radiation. Except for the 2 micron detector, the system noise is limited by the sky background noise. The measurements planned for the IRT use the 1 meter base of the Plasma Diagnostic Package (PDP), an already existing SL 2 experiment, as the glow generating surface. The measurements are repeated changing the position of the PDP, the attitude of the Orbiter, and the ram direction in an effort to remove both the thermal component of the PDP emission and the cosmic background radiation
Entanglement Content of Quantum Particle Excitations II. Disconnected Regions and Logarithmic Negativity
In this paper we study the increment of the entanglement entropy and of the (replica) logarithmic negativity in a zero-density excited state of a free massive bosonic theory, compared to the ground state. This extends the work of two previous publications by the same authors. We consider the case of two disconnected regions and find that the change in the entanglement entropy depends only on the combined size of the regions and is independent of their connectivity. We subsequently generalize this result to any number of disconnected regions. For the replica negativity we find that its increment is a polynomial with integer coefficients depending only on the sizes of the two regions. The logarithmic negativity turns out to have a more complicated functional structure than its replica version, typically involving roots of polynomials on the sizes of the regions. We obtain our results by two methods already employed in previous work: from a qubit picture and by computing four-point functions of branch point twist fields in finite volume. We test our results against numerical simulations on a harmonic chain and find excellent agreement
Three-meter balloon-borne telescope
The Three-Meter Balloon-Borne Telescope is planned as a general purpose facility for making far-infrared and submillimeter astronomical observations from the stratosphere. It will operate throughout the spectral range 30 microns to 1 millimeter which is largely obscurred from the ground. The design is an f/13.5 Cassegrain telescope with an f/1.33 3-meter primary mirror supported with a 3-axis gimbal and stabilization system. The overall structure is 8.0 m high by 5.5 m in width by 4.0 m in depth and weighs 2000 kg. This low weight is achieved through the use of an ultra lightweight primary mirror of composite construction. Pointing and stabilization are achieved with television monitoring of the star field, flex-pivot bearing supports, gyroscopes, and magnetically levitated reaction wheels. Two instruments will be carried on each flight; generally a photometric camera and a spectrometer. A 64-element bolometer array photometric camera operating from 30 to 300 microns is planned as part of the facility. Additional instruments will be derived from KAO and other development programs
