    Dark matter and dark gauge fields

    Following the unexpected theoretical discovery of a mass dimension one fermionic quantum field of spin one half, we now present first results on two _local_ versions. The Dirac and Majorana fields of the standard model of particle physics are supplemented by their natural counterparts in the dark matter sector. In this work, the effect of iron on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the Alā€“Mgā€“Si diecast alloys with different Mn concentrations is investigated. The CALPHAD (acronym of Calculation of Phase Diagrams) modelling with the thermodynamic properties of the multi-component Alā€“Mgā€“Siā€“Mnā€“Fe and Alā€“Mgā€“Siā€“Fe systems is carried out to understand the role of alloying on the formation of different primary Fe-rich intermetallic compounds. The results showed that the Fe-rich intermetallic phases precipitate in two solidification stages in the high pressure die casting process: one is in the shot sleeve and the other is in the die cavity, resulting in the different morphologies and sizes. In the Alā€“Mgā€“Siā€“Mn alloys, the Fe-rich intermetallic phase formed in the shot sleeve exhibited coarse compact morphology and those formed in the die cavity were fine compact particles. Although with different morphologies, the compact intermetallics were identified as the same Ī±-AlFeMnSi phase with typical composition of Al24(Fe,Mn)6Si2. With increased Fe content, Ī²-AlFe was found in the microstructure with a long needle-shaped morphology, which was identified as Al13(Fe,Mn)4Si0.25. In the Alā€“Mgā€“Si alloy, the identified Fe-rich intermetallics included the compact Ī±-AlFeSi phase with typical composition of Al8Fe2Si and the needle-shaped Ī²-AlFe phase with typical composition of Al13Fe4. Generally, the existence of iron in the alloy slightly increases the yield strength, but significantly reduces the elongation. The ultimate tensile strength maintains at similar levels when Fe contents is less than 0.5 wt%, but decreases significantly with the further increased Fe concentration in the alloys. CALPHAD modelling shows that the addition of Mn enlarges the Fe tolerance for the formation of Ī±-AlFeMnSi intermetallics and suppresses the formation of Ī²-AlFe phase in the Alā€“Mgā€“Si alloys, and thus improves their mechanical properties.EPSRC and JL

    Temporal properties of short and long gamma-ray bursts

    A temporal analysis was performed on a sample of 100 bright short GRBs with T90 < 2s from the BATSE Current Catalog along with a similar analysis on 319 long bright GRBs with T90 > 2s from the same catalog. The short GRBs were denoised using a median filter and the long GRBs were denoised using a wavelet method. Both samples were subjected to an automated pulse selection algorithm to objectively determine the effects of neighbouring pulses. The rise times, fall times, FWHM, pulse amplitudes and areas were measured and their frequency distributions are presented. The time intervals between pulses were also measured. The frequency distributions of the pulse properties were found to be similar and consistent with lognormal distributions for both the short and long GRBs. The time intervals between the pulses and the pulse amplitudes of neighbouring pulses were found to be correlated with each other.     A flight investigation of a terminal area navigation and guidance concept for STOL aircraft

    A digital avionics system referred to as STOLAND has been test-flown in the NASA CV-340 to obtain performance data for time-controlled guidance in the manual flight director mode. The advanced system components installed in the cockpit included an electronic attitude director indicator and an electronic multifunction display. Navigation guidance and control computations were all performed in the digital computer. Approach paths were flown which included a narrow 180-deg turn and a 1-min, 5-deg straight-in approach to the 30-m altitude go-around point. Results are presented for 20 approaches: (1) blended radio/inertial navigation using TACAN and a microwave scanning beam landing guidance system (MODILS) permitted a smooth transition from area navigation (TACAN) to precision terminal navigation (MODILS), (2) guidance system (flight director) performance measured at an altitude of 30.5 m was within that prescribed for category II CTOL operations on a standard runway, and (3) time of arrival at a point about 2 mi from touchdown was about 4 sec plus or minus sec later than the computed nominal arrival time

    Thermal expansion method for lining tantalum alloy tubing with tungsten

    A differential-thermal expansion method was developed to line T-111 (tantalum - 8 percent tungsten - 2 percent hafnium) tubing with a tungsten diffusion barrier as part of a fuel element fabrication study for a space power nuclear reactor concept. This method uses a steel mandrel, which has a larger thermal expansion than T-111, to force the tungsten against the inside of the T-111 tube. Variables investigated include lining temperature, initial assembly gas size, and tube length. Linear integrity increased with increasing lining temperature and decreasing gap size. The method should have more general applicability where cylinders must be lined with a thin layer of a second material

    Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability in a Weakly Ionized Medium

    Ambient interstellar material may become entrained in outflows from massive stars as a result of shear flow instabilities. We study the linear theory of the Kelvin - Helmholtz instability, the simplest example of shear flow instability, in a partially ionized medium. We model the interaction as a two fluid system (charged and neutral) in a planar geometry. Our principal result is that for much of the relevant parameter space, neutrals and ions are sufficiently decoupled that the neutrals are unstable while the ions are held in place by the magnetic field. Thus, we predict that there should be a detectably narrower line profile in ionized species tracing the outflow compared with neutral species since ionized species are not participating in the turbulent interface with the ambient ISM. Since the magnetic field is frozen to the plasma, it is not tangled by the turbulence in the boundary layer.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figure

    A method for determining landing runway length for a STOL aircraft

    Based on data obtained from flight tests of the augmentor wing jet STOL research aircraft, a method is proposed for determining the length of the landing runway for powered-lift STOL aircraft. The suggested method determines runway landing length by summing three segments: the touchdown-dispersion distance, the transition distance from touchdown to application of brakes, and the stopping distance after brakes are applied. It is shown how the landing field length can be reduced either through improved autoland system design or by providing the pilot with appropriate information to allow him to identify a "low probability" long or short landing and to execute a go-around. The proposed method appears to determine a safe runway landing length for the STOL application and offers the potential for reducing runway length if great emphasis is placed on a short-runway capability. FAR Parts 25 and 121 appear conservative and suitable for the situation where no great emphasis is placed on reducing the runway length requirement
