From Solar and Stellar Flares to Coronal Heating: Theory and Observations of How Magnetic Reconnection Regulates Coronal Conditions
There is currently no explanation of why the corona has the temperature and
density it has. We present a model which explains how the dynamics of magnetic
reconnection regulates the conditions in the corona. A bifurcation in magnetic
reconnection at a critical state enforces an upper bound on the coronal
temperature for a given density. We present observational evidence from 107
flares in 37 sun-like stars that stellar coronae are near this critical state.
The model may be important to self-organized criticality models of the solar

A Limited In-Flight Evaluation of the Constant Current Loop Strain Measurement Method
For many years, the Wheatstone bridge has been used successfully to measure electrical resistance and changes in that resistance. However, the inherent problem of varying lead wire resistance can cause errors when the Wheatstone bridge is used to measure strain in a flight environment. The constant current loop signal-conditioning card was developed to overcome that difficulty. This paper describes a limited evaluation of the constant current loop strain measurement method as used in the F-16XL ship 2 Supersonic Laminar Flow Control flight project. Several identical strain gages were installed in close proximity on a shock fence which was mounted under the left wing of the F- 1 6XL ship 2. Two strain gage bridges were configured using the constant current loop, and two were configured using the Wheatstone bridge circuitry. Flight data comparing the output from the constant current loop configured gages to that of the Wheatstone bridges with respect to signal output, error, and noise are given. Results indicate that the constant current loop strain measurement method enables an increased output, unaffected by lead wire resistance variations, to be obtained from strain gages
Active shape correction of a thin glass/plastic X-ray mirror
Optics for future X-ray telescopes will be characterized by very large
aperture and focal length, and will be made of lightweight materials like glass
or plastic in order to keep the total mass within acceptable limits. Optics
based on thin slumped glass foils are currently in use in the NuSTAR telescope
and are being developed at various institutes like INAF/OAB, aiming at
improving the angular resolution to a few arcsec HEW. Another possibility would
be the use of thin plastic foils, being developed at SAO and the Palermo
University. Even if relevant progresses in the achieved angular resolution were
recently made, a viable possibility to further improve the mirror figure would
be the application of piezoelectric actuators onto the non-optical side of the
mirrors. In fact, thin mirrors are prone to deform, so they require a careful
integration to avoid deformations and even correct forming errors. This however
offers the possibility to actively correct the residual deformation. Even if
other groups are already at work on this idea, we are pursuing the concept of
active integration of thin glass or plastic foils with piezoelectric patches,
fed by voltages driven by the feedback provided by X-rays, in intra-focal setup
at the XACT facility at INAF/OAPA. In this work, we show the preliminary
simulations and the first steps taken in this project
ADIPONECTIN, LEPTIN, RESISTIN LEVELS IN CYSTIC FIBROSIS ADOLESCENTS
INTRODUCTION: Patients with Cystic Fibrosis, especially in adolescence, could develop endocrine and metabolic complications, related to nutritional state and chronic inflammation. They develop a progressive decrease in lean body mass correlated with the progression of lung disease. Adipose tissue is involved as well and adipocytokines are a possible link between malnutrition and long term complications. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In 24 Cystic Fibrosis adolescents we studied auxological, nutritional, glycometabolic, endocrine patterns, together with leptin, adiponectin and resistin levels. We selected patients not affected by diabetes, insulin resistance, malnutrition, acute inflammatory states so as to avoid possible influences on the adipocytokines. RESULTS: All patients presented with an adequate BMI centile, with no statistically significant difference versus controls. HOMA IR and HOMA B% are in the normal range but lower than in controls, expression of a lower insulin-resistance with a lower insulin secretion. Leptin is significantly higher than in controls and maintains a correlation with BMI and gender. Resistin levels are more elevated in Cystic Fibrosis than in controls, with a statistically significant direct correlation with CRP (C-reactive protein) and insulinemia T0\u2019 and T120\u2019.Adiponectin is significantly higher in Cystic Fibrosis, inversely correlated with CRP and insulinemia and directly with cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol. CONCLUSIONS:The detection of adipocytokines levels could improve the metabolic follow-up of these patients: the maintenance of an adequate leptin gender difference is useful in the follow-up of puberty in adolescence. Adiponectin could be a marker of insulin sensitivity and prevent protein catabolism and loss of lean body mass. Resistin levels may be used as a marker of insulin resistance and may indicate the severity of chronic inflammation. This is the first study available in literature about adiponectin levels in pediatric Cystic Fibrosis patients and about resistin in Cystic Fibrosis
Does exergaming promote neurofunctional changes in Parkinson ́s disease? A pilot clinical study
ntrodução: Estudos anteriores demonstraram efeitos bené- ficos em pessoas com doença de Parkinson treinadas com exergames. No entanto, até onde sabe-se, nenhum deles avaliou se esses efeitos são sustentados por alterações neurofuncionais. Objetivo: Avaliar os efeitos neurofuncionais de um treinamento, por meio da ressonância magnética funcional, em pessoas com doença de Parkinson. Métodos: Trata-se de um ensaio clínico piloto cego, randomizado e controlado com delineamento crossover. Os participantes foram submetidos a uma avaliação incluindo desempenho cognitivo e ressonância magnética funcional antes e após treinamentos com Wii® ou controle. Os treinamentos foram aplicados durante 10 dias, em duas semanas consecutivas. Os participantes que começaram o treinamento com Wii® foram depois movidos para o treinamento de controle e vice-versa. Respeitou-se um período de wash-out de 45 dias entre os treinamentos. Resultados: Memória, funções execu- tivas e visuoespaciais e atenção melhoraram significativamente em comparação com a linha de base (p < 0,05). Não foram observadas diferenças na cognição em comparação com o treinamento de controle. Embora não significativos, os resultados das análises de ressonância magnética funcional sugeriram que o treinamento com Wii® poderia promover melhorias na conectividade funcional do cérebro, especialmente em áreas envolvidas na execução motora, planejamento, funções visuais, de memória e somatossensoriais. Conclusão: Em pessoas com doença de Parkinson, um treinamento intensivo com Wii® melhorou o desempenho cognitivo, que destacou mudanças neurofuncionais em áreas envolvidas no processamento cognitivo.Introduction: Previous studies have demonstrated beneficial effects in people with Parkinson ́s disease trained with exergames. However, to the best of our knowledge, none of them evaluated whether these effects are sustained by neurofunctional changes. Objective: To evaluate neurofunctional effects of a training, by means of functional magnetic resonance imaging, in people with Parkinson ́s disease. Methods: This study was a blind, randomized, and controlled pilot clinical trial with crossover design. The participants were submitted to an evaluation including cognitive performance and functional magnetic resonance imaging before and after the WiiTM or control trainings. Trainings were applied for 10 days, in two consecutive weeks. Participants starting with WiiTM training were then moved to the control training and vice versa. A wash-out period of 45 days between the trainings was respected. Results: Memory, executive and visuo-spatial functions, and attention were significantly improved compared to baseline (p < 0.05). No differences were observed in cognition compared to the control training. Though not significant, results of functional magnetic resonance imaging analyses suggested that WiiTM training could promote improvements on the brain functional connectivity especially in areas involved in motor execution, planning, visual, memory and somatosensory functions. Conclusion: In people with Parkinson ́s disease, an intensive WiiTM training improved cognitive performance that underlined neurofunctional changes in areas involved in cognitive processing
An X-ray and Optical Investigation of the Starburst-driven Superwind in the Galaxy Merger Arp 299
We present a detailed investigation of the X-ray and optical properties of
the starburst-merger system Arp299 (NGC 3690, Mrk 171), with an emphasis on its
spectacular gaseous nebula. We analyse \rosat and \asca X-ray data and optical
spectra and narrow-band images. We suggest that the on-going galaxy collision
has tidally-redistributed the ISM of the merging galaxies. The optical
emission-line nebula results as this gas is photoionized by radiation that
escapes from the starburst, and is shock-heated, accelerated, and pressurized
by a `superwind' driven by the collective effect of the starburst supernovae
and stellar winds. The X-ray nebula in Arp 299 is is plausibly a mass-loaded
flow of adiabatically-cooling gas that carries out a substantial fraction of
the energy and metals injected by the starburst at close to the escape velocity
from Arp 299. The mass outflow rate likely exceeds the star-formation rate in
this system. We conclude that powerful starbursts are able to heat (and
possibly eject) a significant fraction of the ISM in merging galaxies.Comment: 54 pages, 17 postscript figures, AAS late

An ultraminiature light source using a double-spiral shaped tungsten filament includes end contact portions which are separated to allow for radial and length-wise unwinding of the spiral. The double-spiral filament is spaced relatively far apart at the end portions thereof so that contact between portions of the filament upon expansion is avoided. The light ource is made by fabricating a double-spiral ultraminiature tungsten filament from tungsten foil and housing the filament in a ceramic package having a reflective bottom and a well wherein the filament is suspended. A vacuum furnace brazing process attaches the filament to contacts of the ceramic package. Finally, a cover with a transparent window is attached onto the top of the ceramic package by solder reflow in a second vacuum furnace process to form a complete hermetically sealed package

Adiabatic dynamics of an inhomogeneous quantum phase transition: the case of z > 1 dynamical exponent
We consider an inhomogeneous quantum phase transition across a multicritical
point of the XY quantum spin chain. This is an example of a Lifshitz transition
with a dynamical exponent z = 2. Just like in the case z = 1 considered in New
J. Phys. 12, 055007 (2010) when a critical front propagates much faster than
the maximal group velocity of quasiparticles vq, then the transition is
effectively homogeneous: density of excitations obeys a generalized
Kibble-Zurek mechanism and scales with the sixth root of the transition rate.
However, unlike for z = 1, the inhomogeneous transition becomes adiabatic not
below vq but a lower threshold velocity v', proportional to inhomogeneity of
the transition, where the excitations are suppressed exponentially.
Interestingly, the adiabatic threshold v' is nonzero despite vanishing minimal
group velocity of low energy quasiparticles. In the adiabatic regime below v'
the inhomogeneous transition can be used for efficient adiabatic quantum state
preparation in a quantum simulator: the time required for the critical front to
sweep across a chain of N spins adiabatically is merely linear in N, while the
corresponding time for a homogeneous transition across the multicritical point
scales with the sixth power of N. What is more, excitations after the adiabatic
inhomogeneous transition, if any, are brushed away by the critical front to the

Circulating perilipin 2 levels are associated with fat mass, inflammatory and metabolic markers and are higher in women than men.
Perilipin 2 (PLIN2) is a protein involved in lipid storage and metabolism in non-adipose tissues. Detectable levels of circulating PLIN2 (cPLIN2) have been reported to be associated with some types of cancer, but no systematic analysis of age-related modifications in cPLIN2 levels has ever been performed. We measured serum cPLIN2 in a group of old people including centenarians in comparison with young subjects and tested possible correlations with parameters of body composition, fat and glucose metabolism, and inflammation. We found that: i. levels of cPLIN2 do not change with age, but women have higher levels of cPLIN2 with respect to men; ii. cPLIN2 levels strongly correlate to BMI, as well as fat and lean mass; iii. cPLIN2 levels strongly correlate with the proinflammatory adipokine leptin. Due to the adipogenic activity of leptin, it is hypothesized that cPLIN2 is affected and possibly regulated by this pleiotropic adipokine. Moreover, these results suggest that cPLIN2 (possibly together with leptin) could be assumed as a proxy for body adiposity
