Kinetics of natural aging in Al-Mg-Si alloys studied by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy
The process of natural aging in pure ternary Al-Mg-Si alloys was studied by
positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy in real time in order to clarify
the sequence and kinetics of clustering and precipitation. It was found that
natural aging takes place in at least five stages in these alloys, four of
which were directly observed. This is interpreted as the result of complex
interactions between vacancies and solute atoms or clusters. One of the early
stages of positron lifetime evolution coincides with a clustering process
observed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and involves the formation
of a positron trap with \sim 0.200 ns lifetime. In later stages, a positron
trap with a higher lifetime develops in coincidence with the DSC signal of a
second clustering reaction. Mg governs both the kinetics and the lifetime
change in this stage. Within the first 10 min after quenching, a period of
nearly constant positron lifetime was found for those Mg-rich alloys that later
show an insufficient hardness response to artificial aging, the so-called
"negative effect." The various processes observed could be described by two
effective activation energies that were found by varying the aging temperature

Effect of Ibuprofen Administration on Postural Changes in Post-Parturient Sows
Loss of piglets due to crushing is an unnecessary loss that creates both a financial and welfare concern for the swine industry. Sows in the wild lie more quietly after farrowing compared with sows in farrowing crates. The restless behavior of the sow in a farrowing crate increases the chances that she will crush her offspring. Data collected during this study indicate that the discomfort a sow feels associated with lying on a hard surface after farrowing can not be relieved with ibuprofen. This discomfort causes her to change positions more frequently, increasing the chances that she will crush her piglets. Emphasis needs to focus on allowing the post-parturient sow to rest quietly if a decrease in piglet crushing is to be realized
Reassessment of a reported S-delay under Trindade
We present a correction to a paper by Okal and Anderson (1975) about multiple ScS travel-time anomalies. We have reanalyzed data for ScS_2 surface bounces in the South Atlantic Ocean. From these data an ScS_2-S residual of 23.6 seconds was found by Okal and Anderson (1975). This corresponded to an ScS_2 surface bounce point under Trindade island and was inferred to be due to very slow upper mantle associated with the Trindade hot spot. The analysis we present here invalidates this conclusion. The nature of the upper mantle under Trindade is an open issue

Density of states and electron concentration of double heterojunctions subjected to an in-plane magnetic field
We calculate the electronic states of
AlGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs double heterojunctions subjected to
a magnetic field parallel to the quasi two-dimensional electron gas. We study
the energy dispersion curves, the density of states, the electron concentration
and the distribution of the electrons in the subbands. The parallel magnetic
field induces severe changes in the density of states, which are of crucial
importance for the explanation of the magnetoconductivity in these structures.
However, to our knowledge, there is no systematic study of the density of
states under these circumstances. We attempt a contribution in this direction.
For symmetric heterostructures, the depopulation of the higher subbands, the
transition from a single to a bilayer electron system and the domination of the
bulk Landau levels in the centre the wide quantum well, as the magnetic field
is continuously increased, are presented in the ``energy dispersion picture''
as well as in the ``electron concentration picture'' and in the ``density of

High-Frequency Measurements Of The Spectrum Of Sagittarius A*
We report near-simultaneous interferometric measurements of the spectrum of Sagittarius A* over the 5-354 GHz range and single-dish observations that have yielded the first detection of Sgr A* at 850 GHz. We confirm that Sgr A*'s spectrum rises more steeply at short millimeter wavelengths than at centimeter wavelengths, leading to a near-millimeter/submillimeter excess that dominates its luminosity. Below 900 GHz, Sgr A*'s observed luminosity is 70 +/- 30 L.. A new upper limit to Sgr A*'s 24.3 mu m flux, together with a compilation of other extant IR data, imply a far-infrared spectral turnover, which can result from either an intrinsic synchrotron cutoff or excess extinction near Sgr A*. If the former applies, Sgr A*'s total synchrotron luminosity is <10(3) L., while in the latter case it is <3 x 10(4) L. if spherical symmetry also applies.NSF AST96-15025, AST96-13717Astronom
Iron and Ruthenium Glycoporphyrins: Active Catalysts for the Synthesis of Cyclopropanes and Aziridines
In view of the relevance of cyclopropanes and aziridines as synthetic building blocks as well as active parts in biological and pharmaceutical compounds, the development of sustainable synthetic procedures for obtaining these products continues to be a significant challenge. Herein, we report the synthesis of iron and ruthenium glycoporphyrins and their catalytic activity in promoting cyclopropanations and aziridinations by using diazo compounds and aryl azides as carbene and nitrene precursors, respectively. The number and location of carbohydrate units on the porphyrin skeleton modulated the shape- and diastereoselectivity of the reactions. Interestingly, while iron(III) glycoporphyrins showed good performances in alkene cyclopropanations, ruthenium(II) complexes performed better in aziridination reactions. Although none of the reported complexes induced enantiocontrol, probably due to the long distance between the chiral carbohydrate and the active metal center, excellent trans-diastereoselectivities were observed by using iron-glycoporphyrins as cyclopropanation promoters
