Leydig cells express neural cell adhesion molecules in vivo and in vitro
The neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) polypeptides are expressed by numerous tissues during embryonic development, where they are involved in cell-cell interactions. In the adult, NCAM expression is confined to a few cell types, including neurons and peptide-hormone-producing cells. Here we demonstrate that the Leydig cells of the adult rat, mouse, and hamster testes express NCAM as well. Western blotting showed that an NCAM of approximately 120 kDa was present in the adult testes of all three species investigated. This form was also found in freshly isolated mouse Leydig cells and in Leydig cells after 2 days in culture. After 4 days in culture, mouse Leydig cells expressed additional NCAM isoforms of approximately 140 and 180 kDa, indicating changes in alternative splicing of NCAM primary transcripts. Also, NCAM mRNA of all isoforms, as detected by S1-nuclease protection assays, increased with time in culture. The expression of the cell adhesion molecule NCAM by adult Leydig cells may explain the aggregation of Leydig cells in clusters in rodent testes, which could be a prerequisite for functional coordination of groups of Leydig cells. Furthermore, the presence of this neural and endocrine marker may indicate a closer relationship between Leydig cells and neural and peptide-hormone-producing cells than is considered to exist at the present time
Clones in Graphs
Finding structural similarities in graph data, like social networks, is a
far-ranging task in data mining and knowledge discovery. A (conceptually)
simple reduction would be to compute the automorphism group of a graph.
However, this approach is ineffective in data mining since real world data does
not exhibit enough structural regularity. Here we step in with a novel approach
based on mappings that preserve the maximal cliques. For this we exploit the
well known correspondence between bipartite graphs and the data structure
formal context from Formal Concept Analysis. From there we utilize
the notion of clone items. The investigation of these is still an open problem
to which we add new insights with this work. Furthermore, we produce a
substantial experimental investigation of real world data. We conclude with
demonstrating the generalization of clone items to permutations.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, 1 tabl
Conceptualizing throughput legitimacy: procedural mechanisms of accountability, transparency, inclusiveness and openness in EU governance
This symposium demonstrates the potential for throughput legitimacy as a concept for shedding empirical light on the strengths and weaknesses of multi-level governance, as well as challenging the concept theoretically. This article introduces the symposium by conceptualizing throughput legitimacy as an ‘umbrella concept’, encompassing a constellation
of normative criteria not necessarily empirically interrelated. It argues that in order to interrogate multi-level governance processes in all their complexity, it makes sense for us to develop normative standards that are not naïve about the empirical realities of how power is exercised within multilevel governance, or how it may interact with legitimacy. We argue that while throughput legitimacy has its normative limits, it can be substantively useful for these purposes. While being no replacement for input and output legitimacy, throughput legitimacy offers distinctive normative criteria— accountability, transparency, inclusiveness and openness— and points towards substantive institutional reforms.Published versio
Environmental Scanning and Knowledge Representation for the Detection of Organised Crime Threats
ePOOLICE aims at developing an efficient and effective strategic early warning system that utilises environmental scanning for the early warning and detection of current, emergent and future organised crime threats. Central to this concept is the use of environmental scanning to detect ‘weak signals’ in the external environment to monitor and identify emergent and future threats prior to their materialization into tangible criminal activity. This paper gives a brief overview of the application of textual concept extraction and categorization, and the Semantic Web technologies Formal Concept Analysis and Conceptual Graphs as part of the systems technological architecture, describing their benefits in aiding effective early warning
Molecular geometry optimization with a genetic algorithm
We present a method for reliably determining the lowest energy structure of
an atomic cluster in an arbitrary model potential. The method is based on a
genetic algorithm, which operates on a population of candidate structures to
produce new candidates with lower energies. Our method dramatically outperforms
simulated annealing, which we demonstrate by applying the genetic algorithm to
a tight-binding model potential for carbon. With this potential, the algorithm
efficiently finds fullerene cluster structures up to starting
from random atomic coordinates.Comment: 4 pages REVTeX 3.0 plus 3 postscript figures; to appear in Physical

Spin waves and spin-state transitions in a ruthenate high-temperature antiferromagnet
Ruthenium compounds play prominent roles in materials research ranging from
oxide electronics to catalysis, and serve as a platform for fundamental
concepts such as spin-triplet superconductivity, Kitaev spin-liquids, and
solid-state analogues of the Higgs mode in particle physics. However, basic
questions about the electronic structure of ruthenates remain unanswered,
because several key parameters (including the Hund's-rule, spin-orbit, and
exchange interactions) are comparable in magnitude, and their interplay is
poorly understood - partly due to difficulties in synthesizing sizable single
crystals for spectroscopic experiments. Here we introduce a resonant inelastic
x-ray scattering (RIXS) technique capable of probing collective modes in
microcrystals of -electron materials. We present a comprehensive set of
data on spin waves and spin-state transitions in the honeycomb antiferromagnet
SrRuO, which possesses an unusually high N\'eel temperature. The
new RIXS method provides fresh insight into the unconventional magnetism of
SrRuO, and enables momentum-resolved spectroscopy of a large class
of transition-metal compounds.Comment: The original submitted version of the published manuscript.

One Dimensional Oxygen Ordering in YBa2Cu3O(7-delta)
A model consisting of oxygen-occupied and -vacant chains is considered, with
repulsive first and second nearest-neighbor interactions V1 and V2,
respectively. The statistical mechanics and the diffraction spectrum of the
model is solved exactly and analytically with the only assumption V1 >> V2. At
temperatures T ~ V1 only a broad maximum at (1/2,0,0) is present, while for
ABS(delta - 1/2) > 1/14 at low enough T, the peak splits into two. The simple
expression for the diffraction intensity obtained for T << V1 represents in a
more compact form previous results of Khachaturyan and Morris[1],extends them
to all delta and T/V2 and leads to a good agreement with experiment. [1]
