    Updating the Lambda modes of a nuclear power reactor

    [EN] Starting from a steady state configuration of a nuclear power reactor some situations arise in which the reactor configuration is perturbed. The Lambda modes are eigenfunctions associated with a given configuration of the reactor, which have successfully been used to describe unstable events in BWRs. To compute several eigenvalues and its corresponding eigenfunctions for a nuclear reactor is quite expensive from the computational point of view. Krylov subspace methods are efficient methods to compute the dominant Lambda modes associated with a given configuration of the reactor, but if the Lambda modes have to be computed for different perturbed configurations of the reactor more efficient methods can be used. In this paper, different methods for the updating Lambda modes problem will be proposed and compared by computing the dominant Lambda modes of different configurations associated with a Boron injection transient in a typical BWR reactor.     TRACE ELEMENTS IN SHEEP AND GOATS REPRODUCTION: A REVIEW

    The reproduction of small ruminants like goats and sheep managed under extensive range grazing conditions can be affected by nutrients availability and especially by the mineral content of the forages resources on the rangeland. It has been particularly demonstrated that trace elements can have equally, beneficial or detrimental effects, depending on its balance, on reproductive functions in small ruminants. Trace elements as copper, molybdenum, selenium and zinc play key role on the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids; however, the mode of action by which these elements affect reproduction in sheep and goats are not completely understood, due to the complexity in the mode of action of the metallobiomolecules and the neuro-hormonal relationship. In this way, their absence or presence of these minerals in several organs, fluids, or tissues of the reproductive tract have allowed obtaining information on the metabolism and the role of these elements on reproduction in sheep and goats.     Direct Polyphenol Attachment on the Surfaces of Magnetite Nanoparticles, Using Vitis vinifera, Vaccinium corymbosum, or Punica granatum

    This study presents an alternative approach to directly synthesizing magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) in the presence of Vitis vinifera, Vaccinium corymbosum, and Punica granatum derived from natural sources (grapes, blueberries, and pomegranates, respectively). A modified co-precipitation method that combines phytochemical techniques was developed to produce semispherical MNPs that range in size from 7.7 to 8.8 nm and are coated with a ~1.5 nm thick layer of polyphenols. The observed structure, composition, and surface properties of the MNPs@polyphenols demonstrated the dual functionality of the phenolic groups as both reducing agents and capping molecules that are bonding with Fe ions on the surfaces of the MNPs via –OH groups. Magnetic force microscopy images revealed the uniaxial orientation of single magnetic domains (SMDs) associated with the inverse spinel structure of the magnetite (Fe3O4). The samples’ inductive heating (H0 = 28.9 kA/m, f = 764 kHz), measured via the specific loss power (SLP) of the samples, yielded values of up to 187.2 W/g and showed the influence of the average particle size. A cell viability assessment was conducted via the MTT and NRu tests to estimate the metabolic and lysosomal activities of the MNPs@polyphenols in K562 (chronic myelogenous leukemia, ATCC) cells

    Inventario preliminar y uso de mamíferos silvestres no voladores en la vereda Camarón, Montes de María (Bolívar-Colombia)

    During the months of July and August 2015 and March 2016, field visits to the Camarón village were carried out, as part of the project “Towards the Knowledge and Study of the Wild Fauna in the Vereda Camarón and the Municipality of Santo Domingo de Meza, Montes de María (Bolívar). ”Direct traces were carried out in 5 linear transects of 1 km, two repetitions in each one, in order to obtain a preliminary list of mammal species in the area. Likewise, 140 semi-structured interviews were conducted with the community to determine the uses that communities give to these species. Interviews were preferably conducted with hunters and mammalian field guides were used (Emmons & Feer 1999, Aranda 2012) as well as cards with drawings and photographs of mammals present in the Colombian Caribbean (RaceroCasarrubia & González-Maya 2014).Durante los meses de julio y agosto de 2015 y marzo de 2016, se realizaron visitas de campo a la vereda Camarón, como parte del proyecto “Hacia el Conocimiento y Estudio de la Fauna Silvestre en la Vereda Camarón y el Municipio Santo Domingo de Meza, Montes de María (Bolívar).” Se realizaron rastreos directos en 5 transectos lineales de 1 km, dos repeticiones en cada uno, con el fin de obtener una lista preliminar de especies de mamíferos de la zona. Asimismo, se realizaron 140 entrevistas semiestructuradas a la comunidad para determinar los usos que las comunidades dan a estas especies. Las entrevistas se realizaron preferiblemente a cazadores y se utilizaron guías de campo de mamíferos (Emmons & Feer 1999, Aranda 2012) así como fichas con dibujos y fotografías de los mamíferos presentes en el Caribe colombiano (RaceroCasarrubia & González-Maya 2014).&nbsp

    VAMOS: a Pathfinder for the HAWC Gamma-Ray Observatory

    VAMOS was a prototype detector built in 2011 at an altitude of 4100m a.s.l. in the state of Puebla, Mexico. The aim of VAMOS was to finalize the design, construction techniques and data acquisition system of the HAWC observatory. HAWC is an air-shower array currently under construction at the same site of VAMOS with the purpose to study the TeV sky. The VAMOS setup included six water Cherenkov detectors and two different data acquisition systems. It was in operation between October 2011 and May 2012 with an average live time of 30%. Besides the scientific verification purposes, the eight months of data were used to obtain the results presented in this paper: the detector response to the Forbush decrease of March 2012, and the analysis of possible emission, at energies above 30 GeV, for long gamma-ray bursts GRB111016B and GRB120328B.Comment: Accepted for pubblication in Astroparticle Physics Journal (20 pages, 10 figures).     Discerning natural and anthropogenic organic matter inputs to salt marsh sediments of Ria Formosa lagoon (South Portugal)

    Sedimentary organic matter (OM) origin and molecular composition provide useful information to understand carbon cycling in coastal wetlands. Core sediments from threors' Contributionse transects along Ria Formosa lagoon intertidal zone were analysed using analytical pyrolysis (Py-GC/MS) to determine composition, distribution and origin of sedimentary OM. The distribution of alkyl compounds (alkanes, alkanoic acids and alkan-2-ones), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), lignin-derived methoxyphenols, linear alkylbenzenes (LABs), steranes and hopanes indicated OM inputs to the intertidal environment from natural-autochthonous and allochthonous-as well as anthropogenic. Several n-alkane geochemical indices used to assess the distribution of main OM sources (terrestrial and marine) in the sediments indicate that algal and aquatic macrophyte derived OM inputs dominated over terrigenous plant sources. The lignin-derived methoxyphenol assemblage, dominated by vinylguaiacol and vinylsyringol derivatives in all sediments, points to large OM contribution from higher plants. The spatial distributions of PAHs (polyaromatic hydrocarbons) showed that most pollution sources were mixed sources including both pyrogenic and petrogenic. Low carbon preference indexes (CPI > 1) for n-alkanes, the presence of UCM (unresolved complex mixture) and the distribution of hopanes (C-29-C-36) and steranes (C-27-C-29) suggested localized petroleum-derived hydrocarbon inputs to the core sediments.     La creciente epidemia de obesidad ha sido uno de los retos más importantes de salud pública en México durante los últimos años. Con apoyo de la Federación Mundial de Obesidad, en 2021 formamos un grupo de profesionales para identificar y resumir las acciones prioritarias en las que puede enfocarse nuestro país para hacer frente a esta epidemia. Al proceso de desarrollo y discusión de este grupo se sumaron más de 1 000 profesionales de la salud para retomar recomendaciones de documentos y guías de alto nivel previamente publicados. En conmemoración del Día Mundial de la Obesidad, en este 2022 se presenta esta postura como insumo para el desarrollo de acciones en el ámbito profesional y de los diferentes sectores, en la que se incluyen 10 recomendaciones de acción, desde la perspectiva poblacional hasta la atención individualizada, y se enfatiza en la importancia de la participación social, de las intervenciones integrales con visión centrada en la persona y de la sostenibilidad planetaria, además de mejorar la educación y las campañas de difusión, propiciar un ambiente promotor de entornos activos y blindar de conflictos de interés los esfuerzos de prevención y control. La postura hace un llamado para abordar la obesidad de manera seria, con base en la evidencia científica, oportuna e integral, con enfoque de curso de vida, de forma ética y sensible, y sin perpetuar las barreras del estigma de peso en la sociedad
