Charmonium suppression from purely geometrical effects
The extend to which geometrical effects contribute to the production and
suppression of the and minijet pairs in general is
investigated for high energy heavy ion collisions at SPS, RHIC and LHC
energies. For the energy range under investigation, the geometrical effects
referred to are shadowing and anti-shadowing, respectively. Due to those
effects, the parton distributions in nuclei deviate from the naive
extrapolation from the free nucleon result; . The strength
of the shadowing/anti-shadowing effect increases with the mass number. The
consequences of gluonic shadowing effects for the distribution of
's at GeV, GeV and TeV are
calculated for some relevant combinations of nuclei, as well as the
distribution of minijets at midrapidity for in the final state.Comment: corrected some typos, improved shadowing ratio
Microstructure and high critical current of powder in tube MgB2
We report dc transport and magnetization measurements of Jc in MgB2 wires
fabricated by the powder-in-tube method, using commercial MgB2 powder with 5
%at Mg powder added as an additional source of magnesium, and stainless steel
as sheath material. By appropriate heat treatments, we have been able to
increase Jc by more than one order of magnitude from that of the as-drawn wire.
We show that one beneficial effect of the annealing is the elimination of most
of the micro-cracks, and we correlate the increase in Jc with the disappearance
of the weak-link-type behavior.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, submitted to AP

Despite more than a half century of safe cardio-pulmonary bypass (CPB), the evidence base surrounding the conduct of anticoagulation for CPB has not been organized into a succinct guideline. For this and other reasons, there is enormous practice variability relating to the use and dosing of heparin, monitoring heparin anticoagulation, reversal of anticoagulation, and the use of alternative anticoagulants. To address this and other gaps, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists (SCA), and the American Society of Extracorporeal Technology (AmSECT) developed an Evidence Based Workgroup. This was a group of interdisciplinary professionals gathered together to summarize the evidence and create practice recommendations for various aspects of CPB. To date, anticoagulation practices in CPB have not been standardized in accordance with the evidence base. This clinical practice guideline was written with the intent to fill the evidence gap and to establish best practices in anticoagulation for CPB using the available evidence. To identify relevant evidence a systematic review was outlined and literature searches were conducted in PubMedŸ using standardized MeSH terms from the National Library of Medicine list of search terms. Search dates were inclusive of January 2000 to December 2015. The search yielded 833 abstracts which were reviewed by two independent reviewers. Once accepted into the full manuscript review stage, two members of the writing group evaluated each of 286 full papers for inclusion eligibility into the guideline document. Ninety-six manuscripts were included in the final review. In addition, 17 manuscripts published prior to 2000 were included to provide method, context, or additional supporting evidence for the recommendations as these papers were considered sentinel publications. Members of the writing group wrote and developed recommendations based on review of the articles obtained and achieved more than two thirds agreement on each recommendation. The quality of information for a given recommendation allowed assessment of the level of evidence as recommended by the AHA/ACCF Task Force on Practice Guidelines. Recommendations were written in the three following areas 1) Heparin dosing and monitoring for initiation and maintenance of CPB, 2) Heparin contraindications and heparin alternatives, 3) Reversal of anticoagulation during cardiac operations. It is hoped that this guideline will serve as a resource and will stimulate investigators to conduct more research and expand upon the evidence base on the topic of anticoagulation for CPB
Phenomenology of single spin asymmetries in p(transv. polarized)-p -> pion + X
A phenomenological description of single transverse spin effects in
hadron-hadron inclusive processes is proposed, assuming a generalized
factorization scheme and pQCD hard interactions. The transverse momentum, k_T,
of the quarks inside the hadrons and of the hadrons relatively to the
fragmenting quark, is taken into account in distribution and fragmentation
functions, and leads to possible non zero single spin asymmetries. The role of
k_T and spin dependent quark fragmentations -- the so-called Collins effect --
is investigated in details in p(transv. polarized)-p -> pion + X processes: it
is shown how the experimental data could be described, obtaining an explicit
expression for the spin asymmetry of a polarized fragmenting quark, on which
some comments are made. Predictions for other processes, possible further

Two-hadron interference fragmentation functions. Part I: general framework
We investigate the properties of interference fragmentation functions
measurable from the distribution of two hadrons produced in the same jet in the
current fragmentation region of a hard process. We discuss the azimuthal
angular dependences in the leading order cross section of two-hadron inclusive
lepton-nucleon scattering as an example how these interference fragmentation

Bounds on transverse momentum dependent distribution and fragmentation functions
We give bounds on the distribution and fragmentation functions that appear at
leading order in deep inelastic 1-particle inclusive leptoproduction or in
Drell-Yan processes. These bounds simply follow from positivity of the defining
matrix elements and are an important guidance in estimating the magnitude of
the azimuthal and spin asymmetries in these processes.Comment: 5 pages, Revtex, 3 Postscript figures, version with minor changes, to

Hot isostatic pressing of powder in tube MgB2 wires
The critical current density (Jc) of hot isostatic pressed (HIPed) MgB2
wires, measured by d.c. transport and magnetization, is compared with that of
similar wires annealed at ambient pressure. The HIPed wires have a higher Jc
than the annealed wires, especially at high temperatures and magnetic fields,
and higher irreversibility field (Hirr). The HIPed wires are promising for
applications, with Jc>106 A/cm2 at 5 K and zero field and >104 A/cm2 at 1.5 T
and 26.5 K, and Hirr ~ 17 T at 4 K. The improvement is attributed to a high
density of structural defects, which are the likely source of vortex pinning.
These defects, observed by transmission electron microscopy, include small
angle twisting, tilting, and bending boundaries, resulting in the formation of
sub-grains within MgB2 crystallites.Comment: 13 pages,3 figure
Single transverse-spin asymmetry in Drell-Yan lepton angular distribution
We calculate a single transverse-spin asymmetry for the Drell-Yan
lepton-pair's angular distribution in perturbative QCD. At leading order in the
strong coupling constant, the asymmetry is expressed in terms of a twist-3
quark-gluon correlation function T_F^{(V)}(x_1,x_2). In our calculation, the
same result was obtained in both light-cone and covariant gauge in QCD, while
keeping explicit electromagnetic current conservation for the virtual photon
that decays into the lepton pair. We also present a numerical estimate of the

Studies of parton thermalization at RHIC
We consider the evolution of a parton system which is formed in the central
region just after a relativistic heavy ion collision. The parton consist of
mostly gluons, minijets, which are produced by elastic scattering between
constituent partons of the colliding nuclei. We assume the system can be
described by a semi-classical Boltzmann transport equation, which we solve by
means of the test particle Monte-Carlo method including retardation. The
partons proliferate via secondary radiative processes until the
thermalization is reached for some assumptions. The extended system is
thermalized at about fm/ with MeV and stays in equilibrium
for about 2 fm/ with breaking temperature MeV in the rapidity
