All-optical 160 Gbit/s RZ data retiming system incorporating a pulse shaping fibre Bragg grating
We characterize a 160Gbit/s retimer based on flat-topped pulses shaped using a superstructured fibre Bragg grating. The benefits of using shaped rather than conventional pulse forms in terms of timing jitter reduction are confirmed by bit-error-rate measurements
Multilayer clustering: Biomarker driven segmentation of Alzheimer's disease patient population
Identification of biomarkers for the Alzheimer's disease is a challenge and a very difficult task both for medical research and data analysis. In this work we present results obtained by application of a novel clustering tool. The goal is to identify subpopulations of the Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients that are homogeneous in respect of available clinical and biological descriptors. The result presents a segmentation of the Alzheimer's disease patient population and it may be expected that within each subpopulation separately it will be easier to identify connections between clinical and biological descriptors. Through the evaluation of the obtained clusters with AD subpopulations it has been noticed that for two of them relevant biological measurements (whole brain volume and intracerebral volume) change in opposite directions. If this observation is actually true it would mean that the diagnosed severe dementia problems are results of different physiological processes. The observation may have substantial consequences for medical research and clinical trial design. The used clustering methodology may be interesting also for other medical and biological domains
1/z-renormalization of the mean-field behavior of the dipole-coupled singlet-singlet system HoF_3
The two main characteristics of the holmium ions in HoF_3 are that their
local electronic properties are dominated by two singlet states lying well
below the remaining 4f-levels, and that the classical dipole-coupling is an
order of magnitude larger than any other two-ion interactions between the
Ho-moments. This combination makes the system particularly suitable for testing
refinements of the mean-field theory. There are four Ho-ions per unit cell and
the hyperfine coupled electronic and nuclear moments on the Ho-ions order in a
ferrimagnetic structure at T_C=0.53 K. The corrections to the mean-field
behavior of holmium triflouride, both in the paramagnetic and ferrimagnetic
phase, have been calculated to first order in the high-density 1/z-expansion.
The effective medium theory, which includes the effects of the single-site
fluctuations, leads to a substantially improved description of the magnetic
properties of HoF_3, in comparison with that based on the mean-field

Control of chronic excessive alcohol drinking by genetic manipulation of the Edinger-Westphal nucleus urocortin-1 neuropeptide system
Midbrain neurons of the centrally projecting Edinger-Westphal nucleus (EWcp) are activated by alcohol, and enriched with stress-responsive neuropeptide modulators (including the paralog of corticotropin-releasing factor, urocortin-1). Evidence suggests that EWcp neurons promote behavioral processes for alcohol-seeking and consumption, but a definitive role for these cells remains elusive. Here we combined targeted viral manipulations and gene array profiling of EWcp neurons with mass behavioral phenotyping in C57BL/6 J mice to directly define the links between EWcp-specific urocortin-1 expression and voluntary binge alcohol intake, demonstrating a specific importance for EWcp urocortin-1 activity in escalation of alcohol intake
Photonic chip based transmitter optimization and receiver demultiplexing of a 1.28 Tbit/s OTDM signal
We demonstrate chip-based Tbaud optical signal processing for all-optical performance monitoring, switching and demultiplexing based on the instantaneous Kerr nonlinearity in a dispersion-engineered As 2S 3 planar waveguide. At the Tbaud transmitter, we use a THz bandwidth radiofrequency spectrum analyzer to perform all-optical performance monitoring and to optimize the optical time division multiplexing stages as well as mitigate impairments, for example, dispersion. At the Tbaud receiver, we demonstrate error-free demultiplexing of a 1.28 Tbit/s single wavelength, return-to-zero signal to 10 Gbit/s via four-wave mixing with negligible system penalty (< 0.5 dB). Excellent performance, including high fourwave mixing conversion efficiency and no indication of an error-floor, was achieved. Our results establish the feasibility of Tbaud signal processing using compact nonlinear planar waveguides for Tbit/s Ethernet applications
Using resource graphs to represent conceptual change
We introduce resource graphs, a representation of linked ideas used when
reasoning about specific contexts in physics. Our model is consistent with
previous descriptions of resources and coordination classes. It can represent
mesoscopic scales that are neither knowledge-in-pieces or large-scale concepts.
We use resource graphs to describe several forms of conceptual change:
incremental, cascade, wholesale, and dual construction. For each, we give
evidence from the physics education research literature to show examples of
each form of conceptual change. Where possible, we compare our representation
to models used by other researchers. Building on our representation, we
introduce a new form of conceptual change, differentiation, and suggest several
experimental studies that would help understand the differences between

320 Gb/s Nyquist OTDM received by polarization-insensitive time-domain OFT
We have demonstrated the generation of a 320 Gb/s Nyquist-OTDM signal by rectangular filtering on an RZ-OTDM signal with the filter bandwidth (320 GHz) equal to the baud rate (320 Gbaud) and the reception of such a Nyquist-OTDM signal using polarization-insensitive time-domain optical Fourier transformation (TD-OFT) followed by passive filtering. After the time-to-frequency mapping in the TD-OFT, the Nyquist-OTDM signal with its characteristic sinc-shaped time-domain trace is converted into an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal with sinc-shaped spectra for each subcarrier. The subcarrier frequency spacing of the converted OFDM signal is designed to be larger than the transform-limited case, here 10 times greater than the symbol rate of each subcarrier. Therefore, only passive filtering is needed to extract the subcarriers of the converted OFDM signal. In addition, a polarization diversity scheme is used in the four-wave mixing (FWM) based TD-OFT, and less than 0.5 dB polarization sensitivity is demonstrated in the OTDM receiver.</p
Visualization of proteomics data using R and bioconductor.
Data visualization plays a key role in high-throughput biology. It is an essential tool for data exploration allowing to shed light on data structure and patterns of interest. Visualization is also of paramount importance as a form of communicating data to a broad audience. Here, we provided a short overview of the application of the R software to the visualization of proteomics data.
