Rational convexity of non generic immersed lagrangian submanifolds
We prove that an immersed lagrangian submanifold in \C^n with quadratic
self-tangencies is rationally convex. This generalizes former results for the

Applications of system identification methods to the prediction of helicopter stability, control and handling characteristics
A set of results on rotorcraft system identification is described. Flight measurements collected on an experimental Puma helicopter are reviewed and some notable characteristics highlighted. Following a brief review of previous work in rotorcraft system identification, the results of state estimation and model structure estimation processes applied to the Puma data are presented. The results, which were obtained using NASA developed software, are compared with theoretical predictions of roll, yaw and pitching moment derivatives for a 6 degree of freedom model structure. Anomalies are reported. The theoretical methods used are described. A framework for reduced order modelling is outlined
Visualizing recommendations to support exploration, transparency and controllability
Research on recommender systems has traditionally focused on the development of algorithms to improve accuracy of recommendations. So far, little research has been done to enable user interaction with such systems as a basis to support exploration and control by end users. In this paper, we present our research on the use of information visualization techniques to interact with recommender systems. We investigated how information visualization can improve user understanding of the typically black-box rationale behind recommendations in order to increase their perceived relevance and meaning and to support exploration and user involvement in the recommendation process. Our study has been performed using TalkExplorer, an interactive visualization tool developed for attendees of academic conferences. The results of user studies performed at two conferences allowed us to obtain interesting insights to enhance user interfaces that integrate recommendation technology. More specifically, effectiveness and probability of item selection both increase when users are able to explore and interrelate multiple entities - i.e. items bookmarked by users, recommendations and tags. Independent Orbiter Assessment (IOA): Analysis of the hydraulics/water spray boiler subsystem
The results of the Independent Orbiter Assessment (IOA) of the Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Critical Items List (CIL) are presented. The IOA approach features a top-down analysis of the hardware to determine failure modes, criticality, and potential critical items (PCIs). To preserve independence, this analysis was accomplished without reliance upon the results contained within the NASA FMEA/CIL documentation. This report documents the independent analysis results for the Orbiter Hydraulics/Water Spray Boiler Subsystem. The hydraulic system provides hydraulic power to gimbal the main engines, actuate the main engine propellant control valves, move the aerodynamic flight control surfaces, lower the landing gear, apply wheel brakes, steer the nosewheel, and dampen the external tank (ET) separation. Each hydraulic system has an associated water spray boiler which is used to cool the hydraulic fluid and APU lubricating oil. The IOA analysis process utilized available HYD/WSB hardware drawings, schematics and documents for defining hardware assemblies, components, and hardware items. Each level of hardware was evaluated and analyzed for possible failure modes and effects. Criticality was assigned based upon the severity of the effect for each failure mode. Of the 430 failure modes analyzed, 166 were determined to be PCIs
Non-Commutative Corrections to the MIC-Kepler Hamiltonian
Non-commutative corrections to the MIC-Kepler System (i.e. hydrogen atom in
the presence of a magnetic monopole) are computed in Cartesian and parabolic
coordinates. Despite the fact that there is no simple analytic expression for
non-commutative perturbative corrections to the MIC-Kepler spectrum, there is a
term that gives rise to the linear Stark effect which didn't exist in the

The ‘PINIT’ motif, of a newly identified conserved domain of the PIAS protein family, is essential for nuclear retention of PIAS3L
AbstractPIAS proteins, cytokine-dependent STAT-associated repressors, exhibit intrinsic E3-type SUMO ligase activities and form a family of transcriptional modulators. Three conserved domains have been identified so far in this protein family, the SAP box, the MIZ-Zn finger/RING module and the acidic C-terminal domain, which are essential for protein interactions, DNA binding or SUMO ligase activity. We have identified a novel conserved domain of 180 residues in PIAS proteins and shown that its ‘PINIT’ motif as well as other conserved motifs (in the SAP box and in the RING domain) are independently involved in nuclear retention of PIAS3L, the long form of PIAS3, that we have characterized in mouse embryonic stem cells

Development of three-dimensional finite element software for curved plate girder and tub girder bridges during construction
Because of its ability to be easily shaped, steel is an attractive material for curved girders. Plate girder and tub girder bridges, for example, are often the preferred solution for direct connectors in highway networks. This flexibility in fabrication, however, presents challenges for structural engineers because of the difficulties associated with accounting for combined bending and torsion with curved geometry. The potential presence of skewed supports is a further source of complexity. In fact, no commercial structural engineering program currently addresses the evaluation of plate girder and tub girder bridges while modeling them to the full extent of their three-dimensional configuration. Most engineers, for example, use a two-dimensional bridge representation, which is often accurate for typical design of a complete bridge but may also be unconservative in many cases. The few programs that allow a full three-dimensional representation require extensive knowledge of finite element theory as well as significant time to model any complex structure.
This dissertation presents the assumptions, methodology and calculations involved in the programming of a new structural engineering program designed to assess the behavior and stability or curved plate girder and tub girder bridges during erection or deck
placement. It then illustrates the capabilities of the program for various structural systems subjected to a variety of loads, from self-weight to wind and temperature loads. In addition to a linear elastic analysis, multiple types of analysis are offered to the engineer: a geometrically nonlinear analysis provides a more accurate behavior for flexible systems, a linearized buckling analysis yields an upper bound evaluation of the stability of the structure, while a modal dynamic analysis estimates the free vibration modes of that structure.Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineerin
Bright crater outflows: Possible emplacement mechanisms
Lobate features with a strong backscatter are associated with 43 percent of the impact craters cataloged in Magellan's cycle 1. Their apparent thinness and great lengths are consistent with a low-viscosity material. The longest outflow yet identified is about 600 km in length and flows from the 90-km-diameter crater Addams. There is strong evidence that the outflows are largely composed of impact melt, although the mechanisms of their emplacement are not clearly understood. High temperatures and pressures of target rocks on Venus allow for more melt to be produced than on other terrestrial planets because lower shock pressures are required for melting. The percentage of impact craters with outflows increases with increasing crater diameter. The mean diameter of craters without outflows is 14.4 km, compared with 27.8 km for craters with outflows. No craters smaller than 3 km, 43 percent of craters in the 10- to 30-km-diameter range, and 90 percent in the 80- to 100-km-diameter range have associated bright outflows. More melt is produced in the more energetic impact events that produce larger craters. However, three of the four largest craters have no outflows. We present four possible mechanisms for the emplacement of bright outflows. We believe this 'shotgun' approach is justified because all four mechanisms may indeed have operated to some degree
