Interim Report: Art Image Copyright and Licensing Study

This report constitutes an interim report submitted to The Samuel H. Kress Foundation with respect to a grant for the study of museum licensing policies and terms for the use of art images. According to the original grant proposal, the requested grant period was eighteen (18) months, beginning as of May 1, 2009. The first twelve (12) months have centered on research and producing deliverables. That period is now completed. This report will document the tasks pursued and completed during the initial research term of the grant

As such, it may serve as a blueprint for policy development or updating existing guidelines at the local, state, regional and national level. "Now, why single out different kinds of formats or different kinds of media and separate them out from the text-based materials that we’ve typically talked about? And there are a variety of answers. These diverse media present diverse challenges, and they also come in many different variations. I mean, just on the example of audiovisual works, they could range from a simple home movie to a feature release film, or on the example of sound recordings they could be something as simple as an interview, as straightforward as an interview, or it could be ethnological field studies, or it could be, well, Girl Talk and mashups and a variety of other kinds of works.

Sustainable timber use in residential construction: Perception versus reality

© 2014 WIT Press. Close to 90% of new project homes in NSW, Australia are constructed with reinforced concrete flooring and brick veneer envelope whereas many traditional Australian homes were built of timber floor structures with timber walls and cladding. The adoption of concrete and brick homes originated from a perceived advantage of longevity, low maintenance and thermal comfort. Innovation in wood treatments, wood protection and insulation have provided solutions to these issues so that timber is once again a viable option with added benefits such as environmental sustainability and erection speed. This paper reviews literature and analyses the results of a home occupants’ survey on the perception of timber use in new homes in NSW, Australia. It also investigates the comparative performance of a timber veneer/structural timber home to a concrete floor/brick veneer home to evaluate whether perception of timber performance matches reality. This paper highlights Australian homeowners’ reluctance to use timber as a sustainable building product for homes even when they are willing to pay for a more environmentally sustainable home. It also discusses the time and environmental advantages of a timber home over a concrete and brick home based on the results of a test case study

Art Image Copyright and Licensing: Compilation and Summary of Museum Policies

This document summarizes and compiles terms and conditions governing image rights and reproduction from fifty art museums in the United States. The sample of museums was selected from among the 193 museums accredited by the American Association of Museums that have a primary specialty in art. For each museum, copyright and image licensing information was obtained from the museum's website

Art Image Copyright and Licensing: Bibliography

This bibliography is the result of a literature review conducted during the summer of 2009 as part of a study of art museum copyright and licensing policies funded by The Samuel H. Kress Foundation. It collects literature on copyright and licensing issues pertaining to reproductions of works of art, with a particular focus on literature examining the relationship between museum rights and reproduction policies and copyright law. More generally, it includes literature on art and copyright law, examining issues such as notions of originality and the impact of copyright and licensing on the creation of new works of art. While the majority of works in this bibliography are concerned with United States copyright law, it also includes relevant English-language literature on international and comparative copyright laws
