    Low temperature characterization of modulation doped SiGe grown on bonded silicon-on-insulator

    Modulation doped pseudomorphic Si0.87Ge0.13 strained quantum wells were grown on bonded silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrates. Comparison with similar structures grown on bulk Si(100) wafers shows that the SOI material has higher mobility at low temperatures with a maximum value of 16 810 cm 2/V s for 2.05 × 1011 cm – 2 carries at 298 mK. Effective masses obtained from the temperature dependence of Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations have a value of (0.27 ± 0.02) m0 compared to (0.23 ± 0.02) m0 for quantum wells on Si(100) while the cyclotron resonance effective masses obtained at higher magnetic fields without consideration for nonparabolicity effects have values between 0.25 and 0.29 m0. Ratios of the transport and quantum lifetimes, tau/tau q=2.13 ± 0.10, were obtained for the SOI material that are, we believe, the highest reported for any pseudomorphic SiGe modulation doped structure and demonstrates that there is less interface roughness or charge scattering in the SOI material than in metal–oxide–semiconductor field effect transistors or other pseudomorphic SiGe modulation doped quantum wells

    Green Fluorescent Protein in the sea urchin: new experimental approaches to transcriptional regulatory analysis in embryos and larvae

    The use of Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) as a reporter for expression transgenes opens the way to several new experimental strategies for the study of gene regulation in sea urchin development. A GFP coding sequence was associated with three different previously studied cis-regulatory systems, viz those of the SM50 gene, expressed in skeletogenic mesenchyme, the CyIIa gene, expressed in archenteron, skeletogenic and secondary mesenchyme, and the Endo16 gene, expressed in vegetal plate, archenteron and midgut. We demonstrate that the sensitivity with which expression can be detected is equal to or greater than that of whole-mount in situ hybridization applied to detection of CAT mRNA synthesized under the control of the same cis-regulatory systems. However, in addition to the important feature that it can be visualized nondestructively in living embryos, GFP has other advantages. First, it freely diffuses even within fine cytoplasmic cables, and thus reveals connections between cells, which in sea urchin embryos is particularly useful for observations on regulatory systems that operate in the syncytial skeletogenic mesenchyme. Second, GFP expression can be dramatically visualized in postembryonic larval tissues. This brings postembryonic larval developmental processes for the first time within the easy range of gene transfer analyses. Third, GFP permits identification and segregation of embryos in which the clonal incorporation of injected DNA has occurred in any particular desired region of the embryo. Thus, we show explicitly that, as expected, GFP transgenes are incorporated in the same nuclei together with other transgenes with which they are co-injected

    A perturbative re-analysis of N=4 supersymmetric Yang--Mills theory

    The finiteness properties of the N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory are reanalyzed both in the component formulation and using N=1 superfields, in order to discuss some subtleties that emerge in the computation of gauge dependent quantities. The one-loop corrections to various Green functions of elementary fields are calculated. In the component formulation it is shown that the choice of the Wess-Zumino gauge, that is standard in supersymmetric gauge theories, introduces ultraviolet divergences in the propagators at the one-loop level. Such divergences are exactly cancelled when the contributions of the fields that are put to zero in the Wess-Zumino gauge are taken into account. In the description in terms of N=1 superfields infrared divergences are found for every choice of gauge different from the supersymmetric generalization of the Fermi-Feynman gauge. Two-, three- and four-point functions of N=1 superfields are computed and some general features of the infrared problem are discussed. We also examine the effect of the introduction of mass terms for the (anti) chiral superfields in the theory, which break supersymmetry from N=4 to N=1. It is shown that in the mass deformed model no ultraviolet divergences appear in two-point functions. It argued that this result can be generalized to n-point functions, supporting the proposal of a possible of use of this modified model as a supersymmetry-preserving regularization scheme for N=1 theories.Comment: 41 pages, LaTeX2e, uses feynMP package to draw Feynman diagram

    The genus Bolbelasmus in the western and southern regions of the Mediterranean Basin (Coleoptera: Geotrupidae: Bolboceratinae)

    The Bolbelasmus Boucomont, 1911 species of the western and southern regions of the Mediterranean Basin (Northern Africa, Iberian Peninsula and France) are revised. The following three new species are described: Bolbelasmus brancoi Hillert & Král sp. nov. and Bolbelasmus howdeni Hillert & Král sp. nov., both from Spain and Gibraltar, and Bolbelasmus nikolajevi Hillert, Arnone, Král & Massa sp. nov. from Egypt, Libya and Tunisia. Bolbelasmus vaulogeri (Abeille de Perrin, 1898) stat. restit. is removed from synonymy with B. bocchus (Erichson, 1841) and reinstated as a separate species. Bolbelasmus romanorum Arnone & Massa, 2010 is considered a junior subjective synonym of B. vaulogeri. Lectotypes for Bolboceras bocchus Erichson, 1841 and Bolboceras vaulogeri Abeille de Perrin, 1898 are designated. Relevant diagnostic characters (head, pronotum, elytron, external male genitalia) are illustrated. Identifi cation keys for both males and females, and an annotated list of the Western Palaearctic representatives of the genus Bolbelasmus are presented. Finally, fi rst records are given for B. gallicus (Mulsant, 1842) from Corsica and the Midi-Pyrénées region of France, B. keithi Miessen & Trichas, 2011 from the Greek island of Rhodes, and B. unicornis (Schrank von Paula, 1789) from the Tuscany province of Italy

    Effetto combinato di cambiamenti climatici ed urbanizzazione sugli estremi di portata

    Il termine “cambiamento idrologico” (hydrological change) è spesso utilizzato per sintetizzare quell’insieme di alterazioni della risposta idrologica dei bacini indotte da fattori naturali o antropici. ll ruolo fondamentale di tali alterazioni nel determinare fenomeni di dissesto ha stimolato l’International Association of Hydrological Scienses (IAHS) a dedicare la decade scientifica 2013-2022 (denominata “Phanta Rhei”) ai cambiamenti idrologici e all’analisi dei diversi fattori perturbanti. I cambiamenti climatici e l’urbanizzazione sono fra i fattori antropici perturbanti più influenti e, allo stesso tempo, più diffusi a livello globale. Il cambiamento climatico è stato abbondantemente studiato in passato, con chiare evidenze di trend sugli estremi (es. Burn et al., 2011; Arnone et al., 2013) e con numerosi esempi attestanti i possibili cambiamenti idrologici indotti (es. Wang and Alimohammadi, 2012; Francipane et al., 2015; Chiarelli et al., 2016; Pumo et al. 2016). Molto più recente è l’analisi degli effetti dell’urbanizzazione sulla risposta idrologica dei bacini (es. Salvadore et al., 2015). Il processo di urbanizzazione è associato a una perdita di “superfici permeabili” (suoli naturali), con conseguente impoverimento dei processi d’infiltrazione, alterazione ai sistemi di drenaggio naturale e ai processi di trasferimento (alterazione dei percorsi idrici e delle velocità di deflusso). La valutazione dell’impatto di tali perturbazioni sulle portate di picco durante eventi estremi, può risultare particolarmente utile nel definire e orientare efficaci politiche di pianificazione urbana e gestione di eventi di inondazione, nonché in attività di verifica delle infrastrutture idrauliche esistenti e di progettazione di quelle future. L’obiettivo di questo lavoro è quello di investigare gli effetti dell'interazione delle suddette perturbazioni sugli eventi estremi di deflusso. A tale scopo, è stato ideato un esperimento numerico, applicato ad un piccolo bacino fluviale, che ha permesso di generare e confrontare serie temporali di deflusso orario sotto diversi ipotetici scenari di cambiamento. Gli scenari, generati attraverso l’uso combinato di un modello di cambiamento di uso del suolo opportunamente implementato e di un modello di generazione di serie climatiche già esistente (Fatichi et al., 2011), descrivono situazioni estreme sia in termini di espansione delle aree urbane che in termini di variazioni (aumento o diminuzione) della precipitazione media annua (MAP). Nella creazione degli scenari climatici si è anche tenuto conto di un aumento della temperatura media, e, a parità di MAP, sono state create diverse configurazioni, caratterizzate da diversa frequenza e/o l’intensità media degli eventi di pioggia. La risposta idrologica del bacino ai vari scenari è stata riprodotta mediante il tRIBS (Ivanov et al., 2004), un modello idrologico, fisicamente basato e distribuito, in grado di simulare, con alta risoluzione temporale, anche le diverse componenti di deflusso. I risultati mostrano un’alta sensibilità degli indicatori della risposta idrologica utilizzati alle variazioni delle caratteristiche di pioggia. In termini di deflusso totale, gli effetti dei cambiamenti climatici sembrano essere prevalenti rispetto a quelli indotti dall’espansione urbana, anche se, a una maggiore frazione di suoli impermeabili, corrisponde un chiaro aumento della componente di scorrimento veloce, i cui effetti sul deflusso totale vengono parzialmente smorzati da una simultanea riduzione della componente di deflusso lento e profondo

    The superfield quantisation of a superparticle action with an extended line element

    A massive superparticle action based on the generalised line element in N = 1 global superspace is quantised canonically. A previous method of quantising this action, based on a Fock space analysis, showed that states existed in three supersymmetric multiplets, each of a different mass. The quantisation procedure presented uses the single first class constraint as an operator condition on a general N = 1 superwavefunction. The constraint produces coupled equations of motion for the component wavefunctions. Transformations of the component wavefunctions are derived that decouple the equations of motion and partition the resulting wavefunctions into three separate supermultiplets. Unlike previous quantisations of superparticle actions in N = 1 global superspace, the spinor wavefunctions satisfy the Dirac equation and the vector wavefunctions satisfy the Proca equation. The off-shell closure of the commutators of the supersymmetry transformations, that include mass parameters, are derived by the introduction of auxiliary wavefunctions. To avoid the ghosts arising in a previous Fock space quantisation an alternative conjugation is used in the definition of the current, based on a Krein space approach

    Renormalization flow of Yang-Mills propagators

    We study Landau-gauge Yang-Mills theory by means of a nonperturbative vertex expansion of the quantum effective action. Using an exact renormalization group equation, we compute the fully dressed gluon and ghost propagators to lowest nontrivial order in the vertex expansion. In the mid-momentum regime, p2O(1)GeV2p^2\sim\mathcal{O}(1)\text{GeV}^2, we probe the propagator flow with various {\em ans\"atze} for the three- and four-point correlations. We analyze the potential of these truncation schemes to generate a nonperturbative scale. We find universal infrared behavior of the propagators, if the gluon dressing function has developed a mass-like structure at mid-momentum.     Far-infrared induced current in a ballistic channel -- potential barrier structure

    We consider electron transport in a ballistic multi-mode channel structure in the presence of a transversely polarized far-infrared (FIR) field. The channel structure consists of a long resonance region connected to an adiabatic widening with a potential barrier at the end. At frequencies that match the mode energy separation in the resonance region we find distinct peaks in the photocurrent, caused by Rabi oscillations in the mode population. For an experimental situation in which the width of the channel is tunable via gates, we propose a method for reconstructing the spectrum of propagating modes, without having to use a tunable FIR source. With this method the change in the spectrum as the gate voltage is varied can be monitored.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Symmetry preserving regularization with a cutoff

    A Lorentz and gauge symmetry preserving regularization method is proposed in 4 dimension based on momentum cutoff. We use the conditions of gauge invariance or freedom of shift of the loop-momentum to define the evaluation of the terms carrying Lorentz indices, e.g. proportional to k_{\mu}k_{\nu}. The remaining scalar integrals are calculated with a four dimensional momentum cutoff.
