    Rock mass characterization coupled with seismic noise measurements to analyze the unstable cliff slope of the Selmun Promontory (Malta)

    In the Mediterranean area, cliff slopes represent widespread high-risk landforms as they are highly frequented touristic places often interested by landslide processes. Malta represents a significant case study as several cliffs located all around the island are involved in instability processes, as evidenced by wide block-size talus distributed all along the coast line. These diffused instabilities are related to the predisponding geological setting of Malta Island, i.e. the over-position of grained limestone on plastic clay deposits, that induces lateral spreading phenomena associated to falls and topples of different-size rock blocks and is responsible for a typical landscape with stable plateau of stiff rocks bordered by unstable cliff slopes. The ruins of GÆ«ajn ÆȘadid Tower, the first of the thirteen watchtowers built in 1658 by the Gran Master Martin de Redin, stand out in the Selmun area. Currently the safety of this important heritage site, already damaged by an earthquake on October 12th 1856, is threaten by a progressive moving of the landslide process towards the stable plateau area. During autumn 2015, a field campaign was realized to characterize the jointed rock mass. A detailed engineering-geological survey was carried out to reconstruct the geological setting and to define the mechanical properties of the rock mass. Based on the surveyed joint spatial distribution, 58 single-station noise measurements were deployed to cover both the unstable zone and the stable area. The obtained 1-hour records were analyzed in the frequency domain for associating vibrational evidences to different instability levels, i.e. deriving the presence of already isolated blocks by the local seismic response. The here presented results can be a useful contribute to begin to asses defense strategies for the Selmun Promontory, in the frame of managing the landslide risk in the study area and preserving the local historical heritage

    The Role of Emotional and Meta-Emotional Intelligence in Pre-adolescents’ Well-Being and Sociometric Status

    The study examined the relationships among emotional and meta-emotional intelligence, well-being, and sociometric status in 105 pre-adolescents. Emotional and meta-emotional intelligence were measured using the Intelligenza Emotiva: AbilitĂ , Credenze e Concetto di SĂ© Meta-Emotivo (IE-ACCME) test (D’Amico, 2013), allowing to measure ability emotional intelligence (EI), emotional self-concept, meta-emotional knowledge, meta-emotional ability in self-evaluation, and meta-emotional beliefs. Metaemotional dimensions refer to the awareness of individuals about their emotional abilities and to their beliefs about the functioning of emotions in everyday life. Eudemonic well-being and sociometric status were, respectively, measured using the well-known Psychological Well-Being (PWB) scale by Ryff’s (1989) and registering the levels of acceptance/rejection from peers (Moreno, 1960). Results demonstrated that: preadolescents’ meta-emotional beliefs are positively associated to eudemonic well-being: pre-adolescents with higher levels of ability EI, meta-emotional knowledge and metaemotional self-evaluation are more accepted by others while those that overestimate their emotional abilities are more refused by peers. These results evidence that metaemotional variables may play a crucial role in well-being and sociometric status, encouraging future studies on this issue

    The Relationship between Perceived Emotional Intelligence, Work Engagement, Job Satisfaction, and Burnout in Italian School Teachers: An Exploratory Study

    The study investigates the relationship between perceived emotional intelligence, burnout, work engagement, and job satisfaction in 238 Italian school teachers. The mean age was 50 years, ranged from 26 to 66 (SD = 9.16). The research protocol included a demographics data sheet, the Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale (WLEIS; Wong & Law, 2002), the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI; Kristensen, Borritz, Villadsen, & Christensen, 2005), the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES; Schaufeli, Bakker, & Salanova, 2006), and the Organizational Satisfaction Scale (QSO; Cortese, 2001). Several international studies already demonstrated an association among these variables. Our results showed that perceived emotional intelligence positively correlates with work engagement and job satisfaction, and negatively correlates with burnout. Hierarchical regression analyses also point out that, among all the perceived emotional intelligence subdimensions, the use of emotion is the best predictor of the study variables, even when controlling for gender differences. These results suggest that emotional intelligence may have a protective role in preventing negative working experiences of teachers

    Teachers’ Emotional Intelligence, Burnout, Work Engagement, and Self-Efficacy during COVID-19 Lockdown

    Teachers’ psychological well-being is a crucial aspect that influences learning in a classroom climate. The aim of the study was to investigate teachers’ emotional intelligence, burnout, work engagement, and self-efficacy in times of remote teaching during COVID-19 lockdown. A sample of 65 teachers (Mage = 50.49), from early childhood through lower secondary education, were recruited during a period of school closure to answer self-report questionnaires and other measures assessing study variables. Results showed that during the COVID-19 pandemic, teachers reported higher levels of burnout and lower levels of self-esteem due to multiple challenges related to remote teaching and the growing sense of insecurity regarding health safety in the school environment. However, the negative effects of COVID-19 on teachers’ self-efficacy, work engagement, and burnout varied according to their own levels of emotional intelligence. These results demonstrate that emotional intelligence may support teachers in facing these challenges

    FEM and Von Mises analysis on prosthetic crowns structural elements: evaluation of different applied materials

    The aim of this paper is to underline the mechanical properties of dental single crown prosthodontics materials in order to differentiate the possibility of using each material for typical clinical condition and masticatory load. Objective of the investigation is to highlight the stress distribution over different common dental crowns by using computer-aided design software and a three-dimensional virtual model. By using engineering systems of analyses like FEM and Von Mises investigations it has been highlighted the strength over simulated lower first premolar crowns made by chrome cobalt alloy, golden alloy, dental resin, and zirconia. The prosthodontics crown models have been created and put on simulated chewing stresses. The three-dimensional models were subjected to axial and oblique forces and both guaranteed expected results over simulated masticatory cycle. Dental resin presented the low value of fracture while high values have been recorded for the metal alloy and zirconia. Clinicians should choose the better prosthetic solution for the teeth they want to restore and replace. Both prosthetic dental crowns offer long-term success if applied following the manufacture guide limitations and suggestions

    ADC Benchmark Range for Correct Diagnosis of Primary and Recurrent Middle Ear Cholesteatoma

    Objectives. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and in particular diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) have been broadly proven to be the reference imaging method to discriminate between cholesteatoma and noncholesteatomatous middle ear lesions, especially when high tissue specificity is required. The aim of this study is to define a range of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values within which the diagnosis of cholesteatoma is almost certain. Methods. The study was retrospectively conducted on a cohort of 124 patients. All patients underwent first- or second-look surgery because primary or secondary acquired cholesteatoma was clinically suspected; they all had preoperative MRI examination 15 days before surgery, including DWI from which the ADC maps were calculated. Results. Average ADC value for cholesteatomas was 859,4 × 10−6 mm2/s (range 1545 × 10−6 mm2/s; IQR = 362 × 10−6 mm2/s; σ = 276,3 × 10−6 mm2/s), while for noncholesteatomatous inflammatory lesions, it was 2216,3 × 10−6 mm2/s (range 1015 × 10−6 mm2/s; IQR = 372,75 × 10−6 mm2/s; σ = 225,6 × 10−6 mm2/s). Interobserver agreement with Fleiss’ Kappa statistics was 0,96. No overlap between two groups’ range of values was found and the difference was statistically significant for p<0.0001. Conclusions. We propose an interval of ADC values that should represent an appropriate benchmark range for a correct differentiation between cholesteatoma and granulation tissue or fibrosis of noncholesteatomatous inflammatory lesions

    Air pollution has increased over the years, causing a negative impact on society due to the many health-related problems it can contribute to. Although the type and extent of air pollutants are known, the molecular mechanisms underlying the induction of negative effects on the human body remain unclear. Emerging evidence suggests the crucial involvement of different molecular mediators in inflammation and oxidative stress in air pollution-induced disorders. Among these, non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) carried by extracellular vesicles (EVs) may play an essential role in gene regulation of the cell stress response in pollutant-induced multiorgan disorders. This review highlights EV-transported ncRNAs’ roles in physiological and pathological conditions, such as the development of cancer and respiratory, neurodegenerative, and cardiovascular diseases following exposure to various environmental stressors

    Advanced age, time to treatment and long-term mortality: single centre data from the FAST-STEMI network

    Background. Optimization of the techniques and larger accessibility to mechanical reperfusion have significantly improved the outcomes of patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). However, suboptimal results have been observed in certain higher-risk subsets of patients, as in advanced age, where the benefits of primary PCI are more debated. We evaluated the impact of systematic primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and an optimized STEMI network on the long-term prognosis from a single centre experience.Methods. We included STEMI patients included in the FAST-STEMI network between 2016 and 2019. Ischemia duration was defined as the time from symptoms onset to coronary reopening (pain-to-balloon, PTB). The primary study endpoint (PE) was a composite of mortality and recurrent MI at long-term follow-up. Indywidual outcome endpoints were also assessed.Results. We included 253 patients undergoing primary PCI and discharged alive. Mean age was 67.2 ± 12.5 years, 75.1% males and 19.8% diabetics. At a median follow-up of 581 [307–922] days, the primary endpoint occurred in 24 patients (7.9%), of whom 5.5% died. The occurrence of a cardiovascular event was significantly associated with advanced age (p &lt; 0.001), renal failure (p = 0.03), lower ejection fraction at discharge (p = 0.04) and longer in-hospital stay (p = 0.01). The median PTB was 198 minutes [IQR: 125–340 min], that was significantly longer among patients experiencing the PE (p = 0.01). A linear relationship was observed between age and PTB (r = 0.13, p = 0.009). However, both age ≄ 75 years and PTB above the median emerged as independent predictors of the primary endpoint (age: HR [95%CI] = 5.56 [2.26–13.7], p &lt; 0.001, PTB: HR [95%CI] = 3.59 [1.39–9.3], p = 0.01). Similar results were observed for overall mortality.Conclusion. The present study shows that among STEMI patients undergoing primary PCI in a single centre, the duration of ischemia and advance age are independently associated to long-term mortality and recurrent myocardial infarction. However, longer time to reperfusion was observed among elderly patients

    Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) stimulates mitochondrial biogenesis by PGC-1alpha in trained mice

    Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) has been reported to improve muscle hypertrophy, steroidogenesis, physical activity and endurance capacity in mice (1,2), however the mode of action is not completely understood. The aims of the present study were to identify the pathway stimulated by CLA supplementation on mitochondrial biogenesis, one of the most important adaptive response in skeletal muscle after endurance exercise. Mice were randomly assigned to one of four groups (n = 8 per group): placebo sedentary (PLA-SED); CLA sedentary (CLA-SED); placebo trained (PLA-TR); or CLA trained (CLA-TR). The CLA groups were gavaged with 35 ÎŒL per day (corresponding to the 0.5% of food ingested, approximately 4 g) TonalinÂź FFA 80 food supplement containing CLA throughout the 6 week experimental period, while the placebo groups were gavaged with 35 ÎŒL per day sunflower oil. Trained groups performed progressive running on the rotarod for 6 weeks at increasing speed and duration (3). Preliminary findings may suggest that CLA supplementation potentiate mitochondrial biogenesis in trained skeletal muscle via PGC-1 alpha, although further studies need to be conducted to delineate the signaling cascade
