Assessment of the radiological impact of a decommissioning nuclear power plant in Italy
The assessment of the radiological impact of a decommissioning Nuclear Power
Plant is presented here through the results of an environmental monitoring
survey carried out in the area surrounding the Garigliano Power Plant. The
levels of radioactivity in soil, water, air and other environmental matrices
are shown, in which {\alpha}, {\beta} and {\gamma} activity and {\gamma}
equivalent dose rate are measured. Radioactivity levels of the samples from the
Garigliano area are analyzed and then compared to those from a control zone
situated more than 100 km away. Moreover, a comparison is made with a previous
survey held in 2001. The analyses and comparisons show no significant
alteration in the radiological characteristics of the area surroundings the
plant, with an overall radioactivity depending mainly from the global fallout

GASP IV: A muse view of extreme ram-pressure stripping in the plane of the sky: the case of jellyfish galaxy JO204
In the context of the GAs Stripping Phenomena in galaxies with Muse (GASP)
survey, we present the characterization of JO204, a jellyfish galaxy in A957, a
relatively low-mass cluster with . This galaxy
shows a tail of ionized gas that extends up to 30 kpc from the main body in the
opposite direction of the cluster center. No gas emission is detected in the
galaxy outer disk, suggesting that gas stripping is proceeding outside-in. The
stellar component is distributed as a regular disk galaxy; the stellar
kinematics shows a symmetric rotation curve with a maximum radial velocity of
200km/s out to 20 kpc from the galaxy center. The radial velocity of the gas
component in the central part of the disk follows the distribution of the
stellar component; the gas kinematics in the tail retains the rotation of the
galaxy disk, indicating that JO204 is moving at high speed in the intracluster
medium. Both the emission and radial velocity maps of the gas and stellar
components indicate ram-pressure as the most likely primary mechanism for gas
stripping, as expected given that JO204 is close to the cluster center and it
is likely at the first infall in the cluster. The spatially resolved star
formation history of JO204 provides evidence that the onset of ram-pressure
stripping occurred in the last 500 Myr, quenching the star formation activity
in the outer disk, where the gas has been already completely stripped. Our

A New Empirical Model for the Structural Analysis of Early-type Galaxies and a Critical Review of the Nuker Model
The Nuker law was designed to match the inner few (~3-10) arcseconds of
predominantly nearby (< 30 Mpc) early-type galaxy light-profiles; it was never
intended to describe an entire profile. The Sersic model, on the other hand,
was developed to fit the entire profile; however, due to the presence of
partially depleted galaxy cores, the Sersic model cannot always describe the
very inner region. We have therefore developed a new empirical model consisting
of an inner power-law, a transition region, and an outer Sersic model to
connect the inner and outer structure of elliptical galaxies. Moreover, the
stability of the Nuker model parameters are investigated. Surprisingly, none
are found to be stable quantities; all are shown to vary systematically with a
profile's fitted radial extent, and often by more than 100%. Considering
elliptical galaxies spanning a range of 7.5 magnitudes, the central stellar
density of the underlying host galaxy is observed to increase with galaxy
luminosity until the onset of core formation, detected only in the brightest
elliptical galaxies. We suggest that the so-called ``power-law'' galaxies may
actually be described by the Sersic model over their entire radial range
GASP II. A MUSE view of extreme ram-pressure stripping along the line of sight: kinematics of the jellyfish galaxy JO201
This paper presents a spatially-resolved kinematic study of the jellyfish
galaxy JO201, one of the most spectacular cases of ram-pressure stripping (RPS)
in the GASP (GAs Stripping Phenomena in Galaxies with MUSE) survey. By studying
the environment of JO201, we find that it is moving through the dense
intra-cluster medium of Abell 85 at supersonic speeds along our line of sight,
and that it is likely accompanied by a small group of galaxies. Given the
density of the intra-cluster medium and the galaxy's mass, projected position
and velocity within the cluster, we estimate that JO201 must so far have lost
~50% of its gas during infall via RPS. The MUSE data indeed reveal a smooth
stellar disk, accompanied by large projected tails of ionised (Halpha) gas,
composed of kinematically cold (velocity dispersion <40km/s) star-forming knots
and very warm (>100km/s) diffuse emission which extend out to at least ~50 kpc
from the galaxy centre. The ionised Halpha-emitting gas in the disk rotates
with the stars out to ~6 kpc but in the disk outskirts becomes increasingly
redshifted with respect to the (undisturbed) stellar disk. The observed
disturbances are consistent with the presence of gas trailing behind the
stellar component, resulting from intense face-on RPS happening along the line
of sight. Our kinematic analysis is consistent with the estimated fraction of
lost gas, and reveals that stripping of the disk happens outside-in, causing

First Measurement of the He3+He3-->He4+2p Cross Section down to the Lower Edge of the Solar Gamow Peak
We give the LUNA results on the cross section measurement of a key reaction
of the proton-proton chain strongly affecting the calculated neutrino
luminosity from the Sun: He3+He3-->He4+2p. Due to the cosmic ray suppression
provided by the Gran Sasso underground laboratory it has been possible to
measure the cross section down to the lower edge of the solar Gamow peak, i.e.
as low as 16.5 keV centre of mass energy. The data clearly show the cross
section increase due to the electron screening effect but they do not exhibit
any evidence for a narrow resonance suggested to explain the observed solar

Quasars: from the Physics of Line Formation to Cosmology
Quasars accreting matter at very high rates (known as extreme Population A
[xA] or super-Eddington accreting massive black holes) provide a new class of
distance indicators covering cosmic epochs from the present-day Universe up to
less than 1 Gyr from the Big Bang. The very high accretion rate makes it
possible that massive black holes hosted in xA quasars radiate at a stable,
extreme luminosity-to-mass ratio. This in turns translates into stable physical
and dynamical conditions of the mildly ionized gas in the quasar low-ionization
line emitting region. In this contribution, we analyze the main optical and UV
spectral properties of extreme Population A quasars that make them easily
identifiable in large spectroscopic surveys at low-z (z < 1) and intermediate-z
(2 < z < 2.6), and the physical conditions that are derived for the formation
of their emission lines. Ultimately, the analysis supports the possibility of
identifying a virial broadening estimator from low-ionization line widths, and
the conceptual validity of the redshift-independent luminosity estimates based

The Effectiveness of Alcohol Screening and Brief Intervention in Emergency Departments: A Multicentre Pragmatic Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial
BACKGROUND:
Alcohol misuse is common in people attending emergency departments (EDs) and there is some evidence of efficacy of alcohol screening and brief interventions (SBI). This study investigated the effectiveness of SBI approaches of different intensities delivered by ED staff in nine typical EDs in England: the SIPS ED trial.
METHODS AND FINDINGS:
Pragmatic multicentre cluster randomized controlled trial of SBI for hazardous and harmful drinkers presenting to ED. Nine EDs were randomized to three conditions: a patient information leaflet (PIL), 5 minutes of brief advice (BA), and referral to an alcohol health worker who provided 20 minutes of brief lifestyle counseling (BLC). The primary outcome measure was the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) status at 6 months. Of 5899 patients aged 18 or more presenting to EDs, 3737 (63·3%) were eligible to participate and 1497 (40·1%) screened positive for hazardous or harmful drinking, of whom 1204 (80·4%) gave consent to participate in the trial. Follow up rates were 72% (n?=?863) at six, and 67% (n?=?810) at 12 months. There was no evidence of any differences between intervention conditions for AUDIT status or any other outcome measures at months 6 or 12 in an intention to treat analysis. At month 6, compared to the PIL group, the odds ratio of being AUDIT negative for brief advice was 1·103 (95% CI 0·328 to 3·715). The odds ratio comparing BLC to PIL was 1·247 (95% CI 0·315 to 4·939). A per protocol analysis confirmed these findings.
CONCLUSIONS:
SBI is difficult to implement in typical EDs. The results do not support widespread implementation of alcohol SBI in ED beyond screening followed by simple clinical feedback and alcohol information, which is likely to be easier and less expensive to implement than more complex interventions
The stellar dynamics and mass of NGC 1316 using the radial velocities of planetary nebulae
We present a study of the kinematics of the outer regions of the early-type
galaxy NGC 1316, based on radial velocity measurements of 43 planetary nebulae
as well as deep integrated-light absorption line spectra. The smoothed velocity
field of NGC 1316 indicates fast rotation at a distance of 16 kpc, possibly
associated with an elongated feature orthogonal to the inner dust lanes. The
mean square stellar velocity is approximately independent of radius, and the
estimated total mass of the system is 2.6 x 10^11 M_sun within a radius of 16
