Kaon decay interferometry as meson dynamics probes

We discuss the time dependent interferences between KLK_L and KSK_S in the decays in 3π3\pi and ππγ\pi\pi\gamma, to be studied at interferometry machines such as the ϕ\phi-factory and LEAR. We emphasize the possibilities and the advantages of using interferences, in comparison with width measurements, to obtain information both on CPCP conserving and CPCP violating amplitudes. Comparison with present data and suggestions for future experiments are made.Comment: 15 pages, in RevTex, Report INFNNA-IV-93-31, UTS-DFT-93-2

Kaon physics with a high-intensity proton driver

    Get PDF
We study opportunities for future high-precision experiments in kaon physics using a high-intensity proton driver, which could be part of the front-end of a muon storage ring complex. We discuss in particular the rare decays KL→π0ννˉK_L\to\pi^0\nu\bar\nu, K+→π+ννˉK^+\to\pi^+\nu\bar\nu, KL→π0e+e−K_L\to\pi^0e^+e^-, and lepton-flavour violating modes such as KL→μeK_L\to\mu e and K→πμeK\to\pi\mu e. The outstanding physics potential and long-term interest of these modes is emphasized. We review status and prospects of current and planned experiments for the processes under consideration, and indicate possible improvements and strategies towards achieving the necessary higher sensitivity. Finally, we outline the machine requirements needed to perform these high-precision kaon experiments in the context of a muon storage ring facility.Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures; report of the kaon physics working group for the ECFA studies on neutrino factory and muon storage rings at CERN, G. Search for the decay K+ to pi+ gamma gamma in the pi+ momentum region P>213 MeV/c

We have searched for the K+ to pi+ gamma gamma decay in the kinematic region with pi+ momentum close to the end point. No events were observed, and the 90% confidence-level upper limit on the partial branching ratio was obtained, B(K+ to pi+ gamma gamma, P>213 MeV/c) < 8.3 x 10-9 under the assumption of chiral perturbation theory including next-to-leading order ``unitarity'' corrections. The same data were used to determine an upper limit on the K+ to pi+ gamma branching ratio of 2.3 x 10-9 at the 90% confidence level.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures; no change in the results, accepted for publication in Physics Letters

Charged Kaon K \to 3 pi CP Violating Asymmetries at NLO in CHPT

We give the first full next-to-leading order analytical results in Chiral Perturbation Theory for the charged Kaon K \to 3 pi slope g and decay rates CP-violating asymmetries. We have included the dominant Final State Interactions at NLO analytically and discussed the importance of the unknown counterterms. We find that the uncertainty due to them is reasonable just for \Delta g_C, i.e. the asymmetry in the K^+ \to pi^+ pi^+ pi^- slope g; we get \Delta g_C = -(2.4 +- 1.2) 10^{-5}. The rest of the asymmetries are very sensitive to the unknown counterterms. In particular, the decay rate asymmetries can change even sign. One can use this large sentivity to get valuable information on those counterterms and on Im(G_8) coupling --very important for the CP-violating parameter epsilon'_K-- from the eventual measurement of these asymmetries. We also provide the one-loop O(e^2 p^2) electroweak octet contributions for the neutral and charged Kaon K \to 3 pi decays.Comment: 43+2 pages, 2 figures. Version accepted in JHEP. Small changes in the final numerics of CP asymmetries due to change in input valu

High sensitivity of mobile phone microscopy screening for Schistosoma haematobium in Azaguié, Côte d'Ivoire

    Get PDF
Schistosomiasis infections continue to impact African settings disproportionately, and there is an urgent need for novel tools to evaluate infection control and elimination strategies at the community level. Mobile phone microscopes are portable and semiautomated devices with multiple applications for screening neglected tropical diseases. In a community-based schistosomiasis screening program in Azaguie, Cote d'Ivoire, mobile phone microscopy demonstrated a sensitivity of 85.7% (95% CI: 69.7-95.2%) and specificity of 93.3% (95% CI: 87.7-96.9%) for Schistosoma haematobium identification compared with conventional light microscopy, and 95% sensitivity (95% CI: 74.1-99.8%) with egg concentrations of five or more per 10 mL of urine. Mobile phone microscopy is a promising tool for schistosomiasis control and elimination efforts

    Measurement of K^+ \to \pi^0 \mu^+ \nu \gamma decay using stopped kaons

    The K^+ \to \pi^0 \mu^+ \nu \gamma (Kμ3γK_{\mu 3 \gamma}) decay has been measured with stopped positive kaons at the KEK 12 GeV proton synchrotron. A Kμ3γK_{\mu 3 \gamma} sample containing 125 events was obtained. The partial branching ratio Br(Kμ3γ,Eγ>30MeV,θμ+γ>20∘)Br(K_{\mu 3 \gamma}, E_{\gamma}>30 {\rm MeV}, \theta_{\mu^+ \gamma}>20^{\circ}) was found to be [2.4±0.5(stat)±0.6(syst)]×10−5[2.4 \pm 0.5(stat) \pm 0.6(syst)]\times 10^{-5}, which is in good agreement with theoretical predictions.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Physics Letters

    NEWS: Nuclear emulsion WIMP search

    Get PDF
The most convincing candidate as main constituent of the dark matter in the Universe consists of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). WIMPs must be electrically neutral and interact with a very low cross-section (σ < 10 −40 cm2) which makes them detectable in direct searches only through the observation of nuclear recoils induced by the WIMP rare scatterings. In the experiments carried out so far, recoiled nuclei are searched for as a signal over a background produced by Compton electrons and neutron scatterings. Signal found by some experiments have not been confirmed by other techniques. We propose an R&D program for a new experimental method able to observe the track of the scattered nucleus based on new developments in the nuclear emulsion technique. Nuclear emulsions would act both as the WIMP target and as the tracking detector able to reconstruct the direction of the recoiled nucleus. This unique characteristic would provide a new and unambiguous signature of the presence of the dark matter in our galaxy

Measurement of direct photon emission in K+→π+π0γK^+ \to \pi^+ \pi^0 \gamma decay using stopped positive kaons

The radiative decay K+→π+π0γK^+ \to \pi^+ \pi^0 \gamma (Kπ2γK_{\pi 2 \gamma}) has been measured with stopped positive kaons. A Kπ2γK_{\pi 2 \gamma} sample containing 4k events was analyzed, and the Kπ2γK_{\pi 2 \gamma} branching ratio of the direct photon emission process was determined to be [6.1±2.5(stat)±1.9(syst)]×10−6[6.1\pm2.5({\rm stat})\pm1.9({\rm syst})]\times 10^{-6}. No interference pattern with internal bremsstrahlung was observed.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, to be published in Phys. Lett.
