A compatibilist theory of justice and desert
This thesis argues against the asymmetry of desert observed across theories of distribution and retribution. While distributive theories have downplayed the significance of desert, retributive theories have outwardly embraced the role of desert in punishment. At the heart of this imbalance rests an unresolved tension between determinism and freedom. In the interest of bringing symmetry to theories of justice, this thesis reconciles determinism and freedom as two compatible notions of human actions and traits.
Additionally, this thesis argues for an increase in opportunities afforded to the least advantaged in order to balance punishments and benefits. This position stems from an acknowledgment of the empirical realities of crime and punishment in capitalist societies. Foremost among the empirical concerns of this thesis is the reality that criminality in capitalist societies is highly concentrated among those residing on the lowest rungs of the socioeconomic hierarchy. The compatibility of determinism and freedom and the rejection of the asymmetry of desert are utilized in making a case for the desert of opportunity as a priority of just societies
Seeing and Believing: The Emergent Nature of Extreme Weather Perceptions
Perceptions of environmental issues are influenced by a variety of factors. Sociological research on this topic has largely taken a social-psychological approach and as a result the effects of community and biophysical contexts on individual perceptions are given less attention than individual-level predictors, such as political party affiliation or measures of educational attainment. Using data from the Communities and Environment in Rural America (CERA) surveys, I employ a mixed-effects modeling technique to investigate the influence of individual- and county-level characteristics on public perceptions of unusual or extreme weather.
In addition to the survey data, I also utilize county-level weather events data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\u27s (NOAA) Storm Events Database (SED) and the Storm Prediction Center\u27s (SPC) Severe Thunderstorm Events Archive (STEA) in order to test whether the incidence and impact of severe weather influences public perceptions of unusual or extreme weather. This study adds to a growing body of literature on public perceptions of environmental issues by illuminating the socio-demographic and -contextual nature of individual-level perception formation through the use of integrated social and biophysical data

Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future. This was the Center's spring Conference that took place during April 1, 2, and 3, 2005.The conference allowed for many highly esteemed scholars and professionals from a broad range of fields to come together to discuss strategies designed for the 21st century and beyond. The Mock LISA Data Challenges: from Challenge 3 to Challenge 4
The Mock LISA Data Challenges are a program to demonstrate LISA data-analysis
capabilities and to encourage their development. Each round of challenges
consists of one or more datasets containing simulated instrument noise and
gravitational waves from sources of undisclosed parameters. Participants
analyze the datasets and report best-fit solutions for the source parameters.
Here we present the results of the third challenge, issued in Apr 2008, which
demonstrated the positive recovery of signals from chirping Galactic binaries,
from spinning supermassive--black-hole binaries (with optimal SNRs between ~ 10
and 2000), from simultaneous extreme-mass-ratio inspirals (SNRs of 10-50), from
cosmic-string-cusp bursts (SNRs of 10-100), and from a relatively loud
isotropic background with Omega_gw(f) ~ 10^-11, slightly below the LISA

BK virus-specific T-cell immune reconstitution after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation
© 2020 by The American Society of HematologyClinical disease caused by BK virus reactivation is a frequent complication of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). Because of the lack of effective antiviral agents, BK virus-specific T cells are emerging as a potential therapy for BK virus disease, but the immune response to BK virus after allogeneic HCT has not been well characterized. Our study describes reconstitution of BK virus-specific T-cell immunity in 77 adult patients after HCT. All patients had urinary symptoms, and urine was tested for BK virus replication; 33 patients were positive for BK virus (cases), and 44 were negative (controls). In BK virus cases, the median time to first positive test was 75 days (range, 2-511). BK virus cases had lower CD4 T-cell counts 3 to 9 months after transplant, but CD8 T-cell counts were similar in cases and controls. BK virus-specific T cells were identified by cytokine flow cytometry in cryopreserved samples collected prospectively. BK virus-specific CD4 T cells producing T helper 1 (Th1) cytokines recovered quickly after HCT. BK virus-specific T cells were detected more frequently in patients with BK virus reactivation at most time points, and CD4 T cells producing Th1 cytokines were more frequent than BK virus-specific cytolytic CD8 T cells. Early detection of interferon-γ+ and cytolytic BK virus-specific CD4 T cells was associated with lower rates of hematuria among cases. Outcomes of Combined Cardiovascular Risk Factor Management Strategies in Type 2 Diabetes: The ACCORD Randomized Trial
OBJECTIVETo compare effects of combinations of standard and intensive treatment of glycemia and either blood pressure (BP) or lipids in the Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD) trial.RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODSACCORD enrolled 10,251 type 2 diabetes patients aged 40–79 years at high risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) events. Participants were randomly assigned to hemoglobin A1c goals of <6.0% (<42 mmol/mol; intensive glycemia) or 7.0–7.9% (53–63 mmol/mol; standard glycemia) and then randomized a second time to either 1) systolic BP goals of <120 mmHg (intensive BP) or <140 mmHg (standard BP) or 2) simvastatin plus fenofibrate (intensive lipid) or simvastatin plus placebo (standard lipid). Proportional hazards models were used to assess combinations of treatment assignments on the composite primary (deaths due to CVD, nonfatal myocardial infarction [MI], and nonfatal stroke) and secondary outcomes.RESULTSIn the BP trial, risk of the primary outcome was lower in the groups intensively treated for glycemia (hazard ratio [HR] 0.67; 95% CI 0.50–0.91), BP (HR 0.74; 95% CI 0.55–1.00), or both (HR 0.71; 95% CI 0.52–0.96) compared with combined standard BP and glycemia treatment. For secondary outcomes, MI was significantly reduced by intensive glycemia treatment and stroke by intensive BP treatment; most other HRs were neutral or favored intensive treatment groups. In the lipid trial, the general pattern of results showed no evidence of benefit of intensive regimens (whether single or combined) compared with combined standard lipid and glycemia treatment. The mortality HR was 1.33 (95% CI 1.02–1.74) in the standard lipid/intensive glycemia group compared with the standard lipid/standard glycemia group.CONCLUSIONSIn the ACCORD BP trial, compared with combined standard treatment, intensive BP or intensive glycemia treatment alone improved major CVD outcomes, without additional benefit from combining the two. In the ACCORD lipid trial, neither intensive lipid nor glycemia treatment produced an overall benefit, but intensive glycemia treatment increased mortality
The Mock LISA Data Challenges: from Challenge 1B to Challenge 3
The Mock LISA Data Challenges are a programme to demonstrate and encourage
the development of LISA data-analysis capabilities, tools and techniques. At
the time of this workshop, three rounds of challenges had been completed, and
the next was about to start. In this article we provide a critical analysis of
entries to the latest completed round, Challenge 1B. The entries confirm the
consolidation of a range of data-analysis techniques for Galactic and
massive--black-hole binaries, and they include the first convincing examples of
detection and parameter estimation of extreme--mass-ratio inspiral sources. In
this article we also introduce the next round, Challenge 3. Its data sets
feature more realistic waveform models (e.g., Galactic binaries may now chirp,
and massive--black-hole binaries may precess due to spin interactions), as well
as new source classes (bursts from cosmic strings, isotropic stochastic

Upper limits on the strength of periodic gravitational waves from PSR J1939+2134
The first science run of the LIGO and GEO gravitational wave detectors
presented the opportunity to test methods of searching for gravitational waves
from known pulsars. Here we present new direct upper limits on the strength of
waves from the pulsar PSR J1939+2134 using two independent analysis methods,
one in the frequency domain using frequentist statistics and one in the time
domain using Bayesian inference. Both methods show that the strain amplitude at
