    Weed Control with Single and Split Herbicide Applications in Corn

    The objective of the study was to compare season-long weed control from single and sequential herbicide applications in corn. Kochia control was 90% or more late in the season, and did not differ among herbicides. All herbicides except Lumax EZ provided 90% or more Russian thistle control by the season’s end. Palmer amaranth control was lowest when Bicep II Magnum was applied preemergence (PRE) and followed by Lexar EZ postemergence (POST), and when Acuron was applied PRE and again POST. Compared to the untreated control, corn receiving herbicide treatments yielded more than three times as much grain, but yields did not differ among herbicides

    Aquatic Exercise Programs for Children and Adolescents with Cerebral Palsy: What Do We Know and Where Do We Go?

    Aquatic exercise programs may be a beneficial form of therapy for children and adolescents with cerebral palsy (CP), particularly for those with significant movement limitations where land-based physical activity is difficult. The most recently published systematic review (2005) on aquatic interventions in children with CP found supportive but insufficient evidence on its effectiveness. The aim of this paper is to review recently published literature since 2005 with a focus on aquatic exercise for children with CP. In total, six new studies were published with a main focus on aerobic aquatic interventions in higher functioning children and adolescents with CP. Swimming is one of the most frequently reported physical activities in children and adolescents with CP. Therefore, information on its safety and benefits is highly needed, for those with more severe CP in particular. Research design issues are discussed to help guide future research and practice

    It is shown that the Thomas-Reiche-Kuhn sum rule, associated with the photoabsorption cross section from quantum systems, appears to be violated in the case of the quantized rigid rotator, The origin of the apparent violation is investigated, and its resolution is presented on the basis of a related system, i.e., a particle in a spherical delta-function potential whose energy spectrum approaches that of the rigid rotator when the strength of the potential becomes large.     Socioeconomic inequalities in health among Swedish adolescents - adding the subjective perspective

    Abstract Background Socioeconomic inequalities in adolescent health predict future inequalities in adult health. Subjective measures of socioeconomic status (SES) may contribute with an increased understanding of these inequalities. The aim of this study was to investigate socioeconomic health inequalities using both a subjective and an objective measure of SES among Swedish adolescents. Method Cross-sectional HBSC-data from 2002 to 2014 was used with a total sample of 23,088 adolescents aged 11–15 years. Three measures of self-rated health (dependent variables) were assessed: multiple health complaints, life satisfaction and health perception. SES was measured objectively by the Family Affluence Scale (FAS) and subjectively by “perceived family wealth” (independent variables). The trend for health inequalities was investigated descriptively with independent t-tests and the relationship between independent and dependent variables was investigated with multiple logistic regression analysis. Gender, age and survey year was considered as possible confounders. Results Subjective SES was more strongly related to health outcomes than the objective measure (FAS). Also, the relation between FAS and health was weakened and even reversed (for multiple health complaints) when subjective SES was tested simultaneously in regression models (FAS OR: 1.03, CI: 1.00;1.06 and subjective SES OR: 0.66, CI: 0.63;0.68). Conclusions The level of socioeconomic inequalities in adolescent health varied depending on which measure that was used to define SES. When focusing on adolescents, the subjective appraisals of SES is important to consider because they seem to provide a stronger tool for identifying inequalities in health for this group. This finding is important for policy makers to consider given the persistence of health inequalities in Sweden and other high-income countries

    Liver Development, Regeneration, and Carcinogenesis

    The identification of putative liver stem cells has brought closer the previously separate fields of liver development, regeneration, and carcinogenesis. Significant overlaps in the regulation of these processes are now being described. For example, studies in embryonic liver development have already provided the basis for directed differentiation of human embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells into hepatocyte-like cells. As a result, the understanding of the cell biology of proliferation and differentiation in the liver has been improved. This knowledge can be used to improve the function of hepatocyte-like cells for drug testing, bioartificial livers, and transplantation. In parallel, the mechanisms regulating cancer cell biology are now clearer, providing fertile soil for novel therapeutic approaches. Recognition of the relationships between development, regeneration, and carcinogenesis, and the increasing evidence for the role of stem cells in all of these areas, has sparked fresh enthusiasm in understanding the underlying molecular mechanisms and has led to new targeted therapies for liver cirrhosis and primary liver cancers

    Pixxaro Alone and in Combination for Weed Control in Fallow

    The objective of this study was to compare Pixxaro (halauxifen/fluroxypyr) alone and in combinations for weed control in fallow. Pixxaro alone was equal to or better than Banvel, Starane Ultra, or glyphosate alone for kochia control. However, the best kochia control occurred when these herbicides were mixed in various combinations. Similarly, Pixarro controlled flixweed equally as well as Banvel, Starane Ultra, or glyphosate at 7 days after treatment but flixweed control was complete regardless of herbicide later in the season

    Liberty Compared to Glyphosate Products in Irrigated Corn

    Postemergence treatments of Liberty (glufosinate) were compared to Durango DMA and Roundup PowerMax (glyphosate) after various preemergence treatments for efficacy in corn. Control of common sunflower, green foxtail, Russian thistle, and quinoa exceeded 92% regardless of herbicide treatment or evaluation date. Similarly, all preemergence (PRE) treatments controlled Palmer amaranth, kochia, and crabgrass by 93% or more. Later in the season, control of kochia was slightly less when Verdict (saflufenacil/dimethenamid) and atrazine PRE was followed by Roundup PowerMax and atrazine postemergence (POST). Palmer amaranth and crabgrass control was less when Verdict and atrazine PRE was followed by Roundup PowerMax or Liberty and atrazine POST. Herbicide treatments increased grain yields by 49–70% relative to the untreated controls

    The objective of the study was to compare Vida (pyraflufen ethyl) with various tank mix partners for weed control in fallow. All herbicides controlled flixweed and tansymustard 96% or more by 16 days after treatment. Treatments containing Spartan provided faster and better kochia control compared to other herbicides, and these treatments were the only ones to control kochia 95% or more late in the season

    Comparisons of Terbuthylazine and Atrazine Rates and Tank Mixtures in Irrigated Corn

    A comparison of terbuthylazine and atrazine rates alone and in combination with other herbicides in corn was conducted. All herbicides controlled Russian thistle and common sunflower by 90% or more. Preemergence control of green foxtail required a tank mixture of mesotrione (Stalwart C, Stalwart 3W, SA-0070128, and SA-0070129) with terbuthylazine or atrazine to be effective. Both terbuthylazine and atrazine alone provided similar kochia control, but control tended to increase with the addition of mesotrione. Palmer amaranth control was similar among terbuthylazine rates early in the season, but increased as atrazine rate increased. Crabgrass control increased as terbuthylazine rate increased early in the season and with both terbuthylazine and atrazine rates later in the year. Despite differences in weed control, no differences occurred among herbicides for corn yield
