Issues Related to the Provision of Emergency Shelter in Drought Conditions
Building Materials/Selection Criteria Climatic. (300.1)The digital Cuny Archive was made available in part through funding assistance from USAID.In the immediate past, as well as in the present, there have been major drought relief operations in Africa. Although the area most affected has been those countries in the Sahel region, others such as Kenya, Tanzania,Ethiopia and Somalia have also experienced drought of such magnitude that massive relief programs were initiated. A major facet of these operations has been the provision of food and water to the victims of the drought. Later, aid is often used to assist drought victims in replenishing animal herds, acquiring seed for crops, improving water sources, etc. Several agencies have also proposed emergency shelter and housing programs for the victims. This paper explores the issues related to the provision of emergency shelter under drought conditions and the impact of such programs in a long-term context
Social Media’s Integration into Communication Centers: A UNC-Greensboro Case Study
The UNC-Greensboro Speaking Center (SC) acknowledges the growing impact of social media as a means of sharing information, connecting with stakeholders, and fostering a community of practice. In this study, we review the history of social media integration into our center. After securing a presence primarily on multiple platforms, we shifted our focus away from using social media solely for information dissemination to promote social connections and relationships. In our latest digital project during the summer of 2019, we launched a new social media campaign with the goal of promoting our center to incoming freshmen. Through acknowledging our progress, our center plans to continue increasing our social media presence as we believe these platforms remain prospective interpersonal resources.
Roles of Communication Centers in Communicating Science: A Multi-Disciplinary Forum
This multi-disclipinary forum addresses how Communication Centers bridge the gaps between scientists and their public constituents, provides ways to teach scientific communication from the voice of a scientist, and invokng the perspective of science and technology studies, a reflection on how to bridge epistemological divides that often lead to confrontational relationships between scientists and non-scientists is offered

Let’s Talk: Learning to Communicate Well in Emergency Online Learning
In this article, we use the lens of Tinto’s (1987) separation and transition phases to reflect on lessons learned when moving classes with oral communication components from in-person to online. We believe that being mindful and intentional in how we include oral communication instruction, opportunities for improvement, and incorporating feedback can positively impact retention and persistence of students. First, we describe the timelines of events, then we connect Tinto’s essential features of effective retention programs to oral communication pedagogy, and finally offer resources and strategies for incorporating oral communication into courses
Berry-Esseen type bounds for the Left Random Walk on GL d (R) under polynomial moment conditions
Let , where is a sequence of independent random matrices taking values in , , with common distribution . In this paper,
under standard assumptions on (strong irreducibility and proximality), we
prove Berry-Esseen type theorems for when has a
polynomial moment. More precisely, we get the rate
when has a moment of order and the rate when
has a moment of order , which significantly improves earlier results
in this setting
