The Coulomb-Higgs transition of the three-parameter U(1)-Higgs model
We find a first order Coulomb--Higgs phase transition at moderately large
values of the coupling , and no evidence for a change of order at any
finite value of it.Comment: 3 pages, uuencoded compressed ps file. Contribution to Lattice '9
MICROWAVE-INDUCED BISMUTH TRIIODIDE-CATALYZED FACILE SYNTHESIS OF OCTAHYDROXANTHENES
Microwave-induced reaction of 1,3-cyclohexanedione with numerous aldehydes using bismuth iodide is performed successfully toward the synthesis of important octahydroxanthenes. A most probable mechanism is suggested to explain the formation of products
Phenotipic integration does not constrain phenotypic plasticity: differential plasticity of traits is associated to their integration across environments
ResearchUnderstanding constraints to phenotypic plasticity is key given its role on the response of
organisms to environmental change. It has been suggested that phenotypic integration, the
structure of trait covariation, could limit trait plasticity. However, the relationship between
plasticity and integration is far from resolved.
Using a database of functional plasticity to drought of a Mediterranean shrub that included
20 ecophysiological traits, we assessed environmentally-induced changes in phenotypic integration
and whether integration constrained the expression of plasticity, accounting for the
within-environment phenotypic variation of traits. Furthermore, we provide the first test of
the association between differential trait plasticity and trait integration across an optimum
and a stressful environment.
Phenotypic plasticity was positively associated with phenotypic integration in both environments,
but this relationship was lost when phenotypic variation was considered. The similarity
in the plastic response of two traits predicted their integration across environments, with integrated
traits having more similar plasticity. Such variation in the plasticity of traits partly
explained the lower phenotypic integration found in the stressful environment.
We found no evidence that integration may constitute an internal constraint to plasticity.
Rather, we present the first empirical demonstration that differences in plastic responses may
involve a major reorganization of the relationships among traits, and challenge the notion that
stress generally induces a tighter phenotypeinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Recommendations from the Association for European Paediatric Cardiology for training in paediatric cardiac intensive care: AEPC's recommendations for European paediatric cardiology trainees The Working Group on Paediatric Cardiac Intensive Care
The following document provides a summary of the guidelines and recommendations for paediatric cardiac intensive care training as a requirement for recognition as a European paediatric cardiologist. It is therefore primarily targeting paediatric cardiology trainees in Europe, including those doctors who might wish to become experts in cardiac intensive care. These recommendations represent a frame for consistency, will evolve, and may be adapted to specific institutional requirements. They will be complemented by a learning module to be provided by our Association in the near futur
Large electric-field induced strain in BiFeO3 ceramics
Large bipolar strain of up to 0.36% (peak-to-peak value) was measured in
BiFeO3 ceramics at low frequency (0.1 Hz) and large amplitude (140 kV/cm) of
the driving field. This strain is comparable to that achievable in highly
efficient Pb-based perovskite ceramics, such as Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 and
Pb(Mg,Nb)O3-PbTiO3. The strain showed a strong dependence on the field
frequency and is likely largely associated with domain switching involving
predominantly non-180{\deg} domain walls. In addition, rearrangement of charged
defects by applying electric field of low frequency depins these domain walls,
resulting in a more efficient switching and, consequently, an increased
response
