Performance and egg quality of laying hens fed different dietary levels of cashew nut shell liquid
Organic acids have stood out as alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters, especially those extracted from plants, such as anacardic acid, which is present in cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL). This study evaluates the effects of CNSL as a source of anacardic acid in diets of laying hens on performance, egg quality, lipid stability of yolk and microbiological analysis of excreta. A total of 216 commercial Hisex White laying hens were housed in cages and distributed in a completely randomized design with six treatments and six replicates of six birds per treatment. Treatments consisted of a diet without antibiotic growth promoter (AGP); diet with AGP (Halquinol 60% at 0.1 g/kg and Enramycin 8% at 0.1 g/kg); and four diets without AGP and with the inclusion of 2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0 g/kg CNSL. No effects of dietary addition of AGP and CNSL were observed in bird performance and external quality of eggs. A quadratic effect was observed for lipid oxidation in egg yolk, the minimum value of which was found at 5.8 g/kg CNSL. There were no significant effects of treatments on total mesophilic, total coliform and thermotolerant coliform counts on excreta. In conclusion, adding up to 10.0 g/kg of CNSL as source of anacardic acid in laying hen diet did not influence performance or egg quality, but the addition from 7.5 g/kg of CNSL upwards reduced lipid oxidation and improved the yolk colour.Keywords: Anacardium occidentale, lipid oxidation, natural antioxidant, organic aci
Modifier Genes as Therapeutics: The Nuclear Hormone Receptor Rev Erb Alpha (Nr1d1) Rescues Nr2e3 Associated Retinal Disease
Nuclear hormone receptors play a major role in many important biological processes. Most nuclear hormone receptors are
ubiquitously expressed and regulate processes such as metabolism, circadian function, and development. They function in
these processes to maintain homeostasis through modulation of transcriptional gene networks. In this study we evaluate
the effectiveness of a nuclear hormone receptor gene to modulate retinal degeneration and restore the integrity of the
retina. Currently, there are no effective treatment options for retinal degenerative diseases leading to progressive and
irreversible blindness. In this study we demonstrate that the nuclear hormone receptor gene Nr1d1 (Rev-Erba) rescues Nr2e3-
associated retinal degeneration in the rd7 mouse, which lacks a functional Nr2e3 gene. Mutations in human NR2E3 are
associated with several retinal degenerations including enhanced S cone syndrome and retinitis pigmentosa. The rd7
mouse, lacking Nr2e3, exhibits an increase in S cones and slow, progressive retinal degeneration. A traditional genetic
mapping approach previously identified candidate modifier loci. Here, we demonstrate that in vivo delivery of the candidate
modifier gene, Nr1d1 rescues Nr2e3 associated retinal degeneration. We observed clinical, histological, functional, and
molecular restoration of the rd7 retina. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the mechanism of rescue at the molecular and
functional level is through the re-regulation of key genes within the Nr2e3-directed transcriptional network. Together, these
findings reveal the potency of nuclear receptors as modulators of disease and specifically of NR1D1 as a novel therapeutic
for retinal degenerations
Temporal variations of non-volcanic tremor (NVT) locations in the Mexican subduction zone: Finding the NVT sweet spot.
International audienceEpicentral locations of non-volcanic tremors (NVT) in the Mexican subduction zone are determined from the peak of the energy spatial distribution and examined over time. NVT is found to occur persistently at a distance of âŒ215 km from the trench, which we term the "Sweet Spot" because this region probably has the proper conditions (i.e., temperature, pressure, and fluid content) for the NVT to occur with minimum shear slip. High-energy NVT episodes are also observed every few months, extending âŒ190 km to âŒ220 km from the trench with durations of a few weeks. During the 2006 slow slip event (SSE) the duration and the recurrence rate of the NVT episodes increased. Low-energy episodes were also observed, independent from the high-energy episodes, âŒ150 km to âŒ190 km from the trench during the 2006 SSE. Both the high and low energy episodes were made up of many individual NVT's that had a range of energy-release-rates. However, the highest energy-release-rates of the high-energy episodes were consistently double those of the low-energy episodes and the persistent activity at the Sweet Spot. We suggest that all of the high-energy episodes are evidence of small, short repeat interval SSE. Given this model, the increased recurrence rate of the high-energy NVT episodes during the 2006 long-term SSE implies that short-term SSE's also increase during the SSE and are therefore triggered by the SSE
Performance of Lotus corniculatus L. genotypes submitted to cutting interval: subsidies to a breeding program
The objective of this work was to evaluate the response of five birdsfoot trefoil populations (Lotus corniculatus L.), selected under severe and intense grazing (P38, P37, P9 and P3) or cutting (population Corte), one rhizomatous population from Morocco and two cultivars, SĂŁo Gabriel (Brazil) and ARS 2620 (USA), to different cutting intervals (20 and 40 days). The trial was carried out in a greenhouse for 224 days. The plants were submitted to the treatments during four months, when it was made four and two cuttings for the 20 and 40 day intervals, respectively. In the following months, aerial part of the plants was totally removed and after 70 days of regrowth, evaluation of roots and aerial section were performed. Analysis of variance and multivariate analysis was performed, obtaining the Mahalanobis distance (Md), dendogram by UPGMA method and the relative contribution of the characters for genetic divergence. There was no genotype Ă cutting interval interaction and the genotypes presented a reduction on dry matter yield of roots, crown and aerial sections, number of stems and plant height when submitted to frequent cuttings. The most divergent genotypes were Marrocos and P9 (Md = 108.7) and the most similar ones were SĂŁo Gabriel and P37 (Md = 7.8). The results suggest exclusion of the population P9 because of its weak performance and the utilization of the populations Corte and P37 as progenitors in the birdsfoot trefoil breeding program. Root dry matter accumulation and plant height were the characters that contributed most to genetic divergence and they can be used for selection works
Pitfalls in the measurement of muscle mass: a need for a reference standard
Background
All proposed definitions of sarcopenia include the measurement of muscle mass, but the techniques and threshold values used vary. Indeed, the literature does not establish consensus on the best technique for measuring lean body mass. Thus, the objective measurement of sarcopenia is hampered by limitations intrinsic to assessment tools. The aim of this study was to review the methods to assess muscle mass and to reach consensus on the development of a reference standard.
Methods
Literature reviews were performed by members of the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis working group on frailty and sarcopenia. Faceâtoâface meetings were organized for the whole group to make amendments and discuss further recommendations.
Results
A wide range of techniques can be used to assess muscle mass. Cost, availability, and ease of use can determine whether the techniques are better suited to clinical practice or are more useful for research. No one technique subserves all requirements but dual energy Xâray absorptiometry could be considered as a reference standard (but not a gold standard) for measuring muscle lean body mass.
Conclusions
Based on the feasibility, accuracy, safety, and low cost, dual energy Xâray absorptiometry can be considered as the reference standard for measuring muscle mass
Incidence, predictors and clinical impact of permanent pacemaker insertion in women following transcatheter aortic valve implantation: insights from a prospective multinational registry
To describe the incidence, predictors, and clinical impact of permanent pacemaker insertion (PPI) following transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) in women. Background: Data on pacemaker insertion complicating TAVR in women are scarce. Methods: The Women''s International Transcatheter Aortic Valve implantation (WIN-TAVI) is a prospective registry evaluating the safety and efficacy of TAVR in women. We included patients without preprocedural pacemakers and divided them into two groups: (1) PPI and (2) no-PPI. We identified PPI predictors using logistic regression and studied its clinical impact on the Valve Academic Research Consortium (VARC)-2 efficacy and safety endpoints. Results: Out of 1019 patients, 922 were included in the analysis. Post-TAVR PPI occurred in 132 (14.3%) patients. Clinical and procedural characteristics were similar in both groups. Pre-existing right bundle branch block (RBBB) was associated with a high risk of post-TAVR PPI (OR 3.62, 95% CI 1.85â7.06, p < 0.001), while implantation of balloon-expandable prosthesis was associated with a lower risk (OR 0.47, 95% CI 0.30â0.74, p < 0.001). Post-TAVR PPI prolonged in-hospital stay by a median of 2 days (11 [9â16] days in PPI vs. 9 [7â14] days in no-PPI, p = 0.005), yet risks of VARC-2 efficacy and safety endpoints at 1 year were similar in both groups (adjHR 0.95, 95% CI 0.60â1.52, p = 0.84 and adjHR 1.22, 95% CI 0.83â1.79, p = 0.31, respectively). Conclusion: Pacemaker implantation following TAVR is frequent among women and is associated with pre-existing RBBB and valve type. PPI prolongs hospital stay, albeit without any significant impact on 1-year outcomes
Measurement of the p-pbar -> Wgamma + X cross section at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV and WWgamma anomalous coupling limits
The WWgamma triple gauge boson coupling parameters are studied using p-pbar
-> l nu gamma + X (l = e,mu) events at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. The data were
collected with the DO detector from an integrated luminosity of 162 pb^{-1}
delivered by the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The cross section times branching
fraction for p-pbar -> W(gamma) + X -> l nu gamma + X with E_T^{gamma} > 8 GeV
and Delta R_{l gamma} > 0.7 is 14.8 +/- 1.6 (stat) +/- 1.0 (syst) +/- 1.0 (lum)
pb. The one-dimensional 95% confidence level limits on anomalous couplings are
