Intimate Partner Violence in the Deaf Community
Background: Recent indicators show that domestic violence is prevalent in the United States and in the world. Individuals with disabilities, including those who are deaf or hard of hearing are at a higher risk for physical, sexual, and psychological abuse.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to a) investigate the prevalence of intimate partner violence in past and present relationships, b) identify predictors of abusive relationships, and c) categorize support systems for those needing help.
Method: A sample of 167 deaf and hard of hearing individuals completed an anonymous online survey about their current and past relationships.
Results: Results indicated that 7% of the sample reported domestic violence in their current relationships; 44% reported domestic violence in past relationships. A multiple regression identified tension in the relationship and the absence of disabilities in their partner as significant predictors of current abuse. A significant predictor of past abuse was tension in the relationship. Ease of communication, whether through a signing therapist or a qualified interpreter, was essential in seeking services.
Discussion; Given the prevalence of IPV in the deaf community, practitioners may want to explore outreach and intervention strategies. They may want to focus on understanding the interplay of dynamics that influence violence in relationships was well as the role of support systems for individuals seeking help
Some issues concerning Large-Eddy Simulation of inertial particle dispersion in turbulent bounded flows
The problem of an accurate Eulerian-Lagrangian modeling of inertial particle
dispersion in Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of turbulent wall-bounded flows is
addressed. We run Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) for turbulent channel flow
at shear Reynolds numbers equal to 150 and 300 and corresponding a-priori and
a-posteriori LES on differently coarse grids. We then tracked swarms of
different inertia particles and we examined the influence of filtering and of
Sub-Grid Scale (SGS) modeling for the fluid phase on particle velocity and
concentration statistics. We also focused on how particle preferential
segregation is predicted by LES. Results show that even ``well-resolved'' LES
is unable to reproduce the physics as demonstrated by DNS, both for particle
accumulation at the wall and for particle preferential segregation. Inaccurate
prediction is observed for the entire range of particles considered in this
study, even when the particle response time is much larger than the flow
timescales not resolved in LES. Both a-priori and a-posteriori tests indicate
that recovering the level of fluid and particle velocity fluctuations is not
enough to have accurate prediction of near-wall accumulation and local
segregation. This may suggest that reintroducing the correct amount of
higher-order moments of the velocity fluctuations is also a key point for SGS
closure models for the particle equation. Another important issue is the
presence of possible flow Reynolds number effects on particle dispersion. Our
results show that, in small Reynolds number turbulence and in the case of heavy
particles, the shear fluid velocity is a suitable scaling parameter to quantify
these effects
Katharine Susannah Prichard\u27s Coonardoo : an historical study
The focus of this thesis is Katharine Susannah Prichard\u27s novel, Coonardoo ( 1929), and its capacity to provide a framework for the reconstruction of the historical situation in the North-West region of Western Australia during the period mid-1860s to late 1920s. The thesis has a dual purpose: to contextualise the novel in terms of the historical, political, ideological, and social situation; and to read the novel in ways which reveal its reconstruction of the wider historical context. My approach is a new historicist close reading of the text. Specific events or situations are scrutinised for their power to convey insights into the extra-textual situation. For example, the textualisation of the relationship between the white hero and the Aboriginal heroine leads to an exploration of attitudes to interracial sexual encounters in the period of the novel and in the author\u27s contemporary milieu. Included in this work is an exposition of the various industries which contributed substantially to the economic development of the North-West region. These are treated in some depth in relation to their historical circumstances but with particular reference to textual events and situations. An important area of discussion is the social and economic situation which developed between the European settlers in the North-West and the indigenous population of the region. Particular reference is made to the displacement, subjugation and diaspora of the region\u27s Aboriginal population. The pre-contact cultural and religious practices of the Aborigines of the North-West region, and the extent to which these patterns survived into the author\u27s contemporary period, is investigated in the thesis. An appraisal is made of the author\u27s claim that during her visit to the North-West in 1926, she directly observed the Aboriginal traditional forms represented in Coonardoo. Prichard\u27s own socio-cultural and ideological position is explored in relation to the Aboriginal dimension in the novel. Especially relevant is the author\u27s adherence to the theory of Social Darwinism and to the view, prevalent in her society, that the extinction of the Aborigines was imminent and inevitable. Prichard\u27s novel is the starting point of an investigation into the social, economic and political background of the North-West region during the first sixty years of white settlement. The task of this thesis is to \u27recover\u27 the wider historical situation by reference to documents, journals, memoirs and newspapers of the period
Review article: the global emergence of Helicobacter pylori antibiotic resistance.
BackgroundHelicobacter pylori is one of the most prevalent global pathogens and can lead to gastrointestinal disease including peptic ulcers, gastric marginal zone lymphoma and gastric carcinoma.AimTo review recent trends in H. pylori antibiotic resistance rates, and to discuss diagnostics and treatment paradigms.MethodsA PubMed literature search using the following keywords: Helicobacter pylori, antibiotic resistance, clarithromycin, levofloxacin, metronidazole, prevalence, susceptibility testing.ResultsThe prevalence of bacterial antibiotic resistance is regionally variable and appears to be markedly increasing with time in many countries. Concordantly, the antimicrobial eradication rate of H. pylori has been declining globally. In particular, clarithromycin resistance has been rapidly increasing in many countries over the past decade, with rates as high as approximately 30% in Japan and Italy, 50% in China and 40% in Turkey; whereas resistance rates are much lower in Sweden and Taiwan, at approximately 15%; there are limited data in the USA. Other antibiotics show similar trends, although less pronounced.ConclusionsSince the choice of empiric therapies should be predicated on accurate information regarding antibiotic resistance rates, there is a critical need for determination of current rates at a local scale, and perhaps in individual patients. Such information would not only guide selection of appropriate empiric antibiotic therapy but also inform the development of better methods to identify H. pylori antibiotic resistance at diagnosis. Patient-specific tailoring of effective antibiotic treatment strategies may lead to reduced treatment failures and less antibiotic resistance
Statistical properties of an ideal subgrid-scale correction for Lagrangian particle tracking in turbulent channel flow
One issue associated with the use of Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) to
investigate the dispersion of small inertial particles in turbulent flows is
the accuracy with which particle statistics and concentration can be
reproduced. The motion of particles in LES fields may differ significantly from
that observed in experiments or direct numerical simulation (DNS) because the
force acting on the particles is not accurately estimated, due to the
availability of the only filtered fluid velocity, and because errors accumulate
in time leading to a progressive divergence of the trajectories. This may lead
to different degrees of inaccuracy in the prediction of statistics and
concentration. We identify herein an ideal subgrid correction of the a-priori
LES fluid velocity seen by the particles in turbulent channel flow. This
correction is computed by imposing that the trajectories of individual
particles moving in filtered DNS fields exactly coincide with the particle
trajectories in a DNS. In this way the errors introduced by filtering into the
particle motion equations can be singled out and analyzed separately from those
due to the progressive divergence of the trajectories. The subgrid correction
term, and therefore the filtering error, is characterized in the present paper
in terms of statistical moments. The effects of the particle inertia and of the
filter type and width on the properties of the correction term are

Incommensurate magnetic ordering in Cu2Te2O5X2 (X=Cl, Br) studied by single crystal neutron diffraction
Polarized and unpolarized neutron diffraction studies have been carried out
on single crystals of the coupled spin tetrahedra systems Cu2Te2O5X2 (X=Cl,
Br). A model of the magnetic structure associated with the propagation vectors
k'Cl ~ -0.150,0.422,1/2 and k'Br ~ -0.172,0.356,1/2 and stable below TN=18 K
for X=Cl and TN=11 K for X=Br is proposed. A feature of the model, common to
both the bromide and chloride, is a canted coplanar motif for the 4 Cu2+ spins
on each tetrahedron which rotates on a helix from cell to cell following the
propagation vector. The Cu2+magnetic moment determined for X=Br, 0.395(5)muB,
is significantly less than for X=Cl, 0.88(1)muB at 2K. The magnetic structure
of the chloride associated with the wave-vector k' differs from that determined
previously for the wave vector k~0.150,0.422,1/2 [O. Zaharko et.al. Phys. Rev.

Setting Priorities for Space Research: Opportunities and Imperatives
This report represents the first phase of a study by a task group convened by the Space Studies Board to ascertain whether it should attempt to develop a methodology for recommending priorities among the various initiatives in space research (that is, scientific activities concerned with phenomena in space or utilizing observations from space). The report argues that such priority statements by the space research community are both necessary and desirable and would contribute to the formulation and implementation of public policy. The report advocates the establishment of priorities to enhance effective management of the nation's scientific research program in space. It argues that scientific objectives and purposes should determine how and under what circumstances scientific research should be done. The report does not take a position on the controversy between advocates of manned space exploration and those who favor the exclusive use of unmanned space vehicles. Nor does the report address questions about the value or appropriateness of Space Station Freedom or proposals to establish a permanent manned Moon base or to undertake a manned mission to Mars. These issues lie beyond the charge to the task group
