Group-oriented coordination models for distributed client-server computing
This paper describes group-oriented control models for distributed client-server interactions. These models transparently coordinate requests for services that involve multiple servers, such as queries across distributed databases. Specific capabilities include: decomposing and replicating client requests; dispatching request subtasks or copies to independent, networked servers; and combining server results into a single response for the client. The control models were implemented by combining request broker and process group technologies with an object-oriented communication middleware tool. The models are illustrated in the context of a distributed operations support application for space-based systems
X-ray properties of an Unbiased Hard X-ray Detected Sample of AGN
The SWIFT gamma ray observatory's Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) has detected a
sample of active galactic nuclei (AGN) based solely on their hard X-ray flux
(14-195 keV). In this paper, we present for the first time {\it XMM-Newton}
X-ray spectra for 22 BAT AGNs with no previously analyzed X-ray spectra. If our
sources are a representative sample of the BAT AGN, as we claim, our results
present for the first time global X-ray properties of an unbiased towards
absorption (n), AGN
sample. We find 9/22 low absorption (n cm), simple power
law model sources, where 4 of these sources have a statistically significant
soft component. Among these sources, we find the presence of a warm absorber
statistically significant for only one Seyfert 1 source, contrasting with the
ASCA results of \citet{rey97} and \citet{geo98}, who find signatures of warm
absorption in half or more of their Seyfert 1 samples at similar redshifts.
Additionally, the remaining sources (14/22) have more complex spectra, well-fit
by an absorbed power law at keV. Five of the complex sources are
classified as Compton-thick candidates. Further, we find four more sources with
properties consistent with the hidden/buried AGN reported by Ueda {\it et al.}
(2007). Finally, we include a comparison of the {\it XMM-Newton} EPIC spectra
with available SWIFT X-ray Telescope (XRT) observations. From these
comparisons, we find 6/16 sources with varying column densities, 6/16 sources
with varying power law indices, and 13/16 sources with varying fluxes, over
periods of hours to months. Flux and power law index are correlated for objects

Increasing Doses of Intraoperative Hydromorphone Do Not Reduce Postoperative Pain
Introduction:
• Intermediate and long acting opioids are given intraoperatively to reduce pain during emergence from anesthesia.
• Recent evidence suggests that intraoperative opioids have inconsistent effects on nociception and pain in the immediate postoperative period.
• Multiple potent, short-acting opioids such as remifentanil, sufentanil and fentanyl have been shown to produce dose-related increases in pain scores and opioid consumption in the immediate postoperative recovery period.
• Intraoperative doses of longer acting opioids such as morphine and methadone6 have been shown to reduce pain scores and narcotic requirements in the immediate postoperative period.
• Hydromorphone is an intermediate duration narcotic which is commonly used intraoperatively but has not been studied for its potential to reduce pain in the immediate postoperative period
Avoidant Personality Disorder and the Generalized Subtype of Social Phobia
Social phobia and avoidant personality disorder (APD) may be given as comorbid diagnoses. However, it is not known if the labels provide independent, useful diagnostic information. We classified social phobics by social phobia subtype and presence of APD. Generalized social phobics with and without APD (ns = 10 and 10) and nongeneralized social phobics without APD (n = 10) were distinguished on measures of phobic severity. The generalized groups also showed earlier age at onset and higher scores on measures of depression, fear of negative evaluation, and social anxiety and avoidance than did the nongeneralized group. APD criteria of general timidity and risk aversion were more frequently endorsed by social phobics with APD. The data suggest that both the generalized subtype of social phobia and the presence of APD do provide useful diagnostic information but the additional diagnosis of APD may simply identify a severe subgroup of social phobics
Sample Size Requirements for In Situ Vegetation and Substrate Classifications in Shallow, Natural Nebraska Lakes
We assessed the precision of visual estimates of vegetation and substrate along transects in 15 shallow, natural Nebraska lakes. Vegetation type (submergent or emergent), vegetation density (sparse, moderate, or dense), and substrate composition (percentage sand, muck, and clay; to the nearest 10%) were estimated at 25–70 sampling sites per lake by two independent observers. Observer agreement for vegetation type was 92%. Agreement ranged from 62.5% to 90.1% for substrate composition. Agreement was also high (72%) for vegetation density estimates. The relatively high agreement between estimates was likely attributable to the homogeneity of the lake habitats. Nearly 90% of the substrate sites were classified as 0% clay, and over 68% as either 0% or 100% sand. When habitats were homogeneous, less than 40 sampling sites per lake were required for 95% confidence that habitat composition was within 10% of the true mean, and over 100 sites were required when habitats were heterogeneous. Our results suggest that relatively high precision is attainable for vegetation and substrate mapping in shallow, natural lakes
Objectives and integrated approaches for the control of brown tree snakes: An updated overview
After its inadvertent introduction to Guam, the brown tree snake (Boiga irregularis, BTS) extirpated most of the island\u27s native terrestrial vertebrates, presented a health hazard to small children, and had considerable economic ramifications. Management of BTS is aimed at a number of objectives, the foremost of which has been to deter its dispersal from Guam to other locations. Further objectives include reclaiming areas on Guam as snake-free for reintroduction of native wildlife, to protect small sensitive sites on Guam from BTS intrusion (e.g, power stations, bird nesting sites), to contain and capture stowaway BTS incoming to vulnerable destinations, and to control incipient populations in other areas beyond their native range. A number of control tools have been developed, and the efficacy of each control method depends on the situation to which it is applied. Integration of control methods provides the most efficacious results for all objectives. Here, we outline the different objectives for managing BTS, and the tools and methods available for BTS management. We complete the picture by describing which tools and methods are best suited to accomplish each management objective
Roots-eye view: using microdialysis and microCT to non-destructively map root nutrient depletion and accumulation zones
Improvement in fertiliser use efficiency is a key aspect for achieving sustainable agriculture in order to minimise costs, greenhouse gas emissions and pollution from nutrient runoff. To optimise root architecture for nutrient uptake and efficiency we need to understand what the roots encounter in their environment. Traditional methods of nutrient sampling such as salt extractions can only be done at the end of an experiment, are impractical for sampling locations precisely and give total nutrient values which can overestimate the nutrients available to the roots. In contrast, microdialysis provides a non-invasive, continuous method for sampling available nutrients in the soil. Here for the first time we have used microCT imaging to position microdialysis probes at known distances from the roots and then measured the available nitrate and ammonium. We found that nitrate accumulated close to roots while ammonium was depleted demonstrating that this combination of complementary techniques provides a unique ability to measure root-available nutrients non-destructively and in almost real-time
