Implementation of a Standardized Handoff System for a General Surgery Residency Program

    Get PDF
Introduction: The I-PASS Handoff Bundle is an evidence based standardized set of educational materials designed to decrease handoff failures in patient care. Two of every three sentinel events , the most serious events reported to the Joint Commission, are due to failures of communication, including miscommunication during patient care handoffs. Implementation of the I-PASS method results in decreased medical errors and preventable adverse events There are few studies that evaluate this validated method in the context of a General Surgery resident program We aim to implement the I-PASS system into the transition of care process for General Surgery residents at our institution, and to analyze of the quality of the handoff process before and after the implementation.https://jdc.jefferson.edu/patientsafetyposters/1047/thumbnail.jp

Deviation from one-dimensionality in stationary properties and collisional dynamics of matter-wave solitons

By means of analytical and numerical methods, we study how the residual three-dimensionality affects dynamics of solitons in an attractive Bose-Einstein condensate loaded into a cigar-shaped trap. Based on an effective 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equation that includes an additional quintic self-focusing term, generated by the tight transverse confinement, we find a family of exact one-soliton solutions and demonstrate stability of the entire family, despite the possibility of collapse in the 1D equation with the quintic self-focusing nonlinearity. Simulating collisions between two solitons in the same setting, we find a critical velocity, VcV_{c}, below which merger of identical in-phase solitons is observed. Dependence of VcV_{c} on the strength of the transverse confinement and number of atoms in the solitons is predicted by means of the perturbation theory and investigated in direct simulations. Symmetry breaking in collisions of identical solitons with a nonzero phase difference is also shown in simulations and qualitatively explained by means of an analytical approximation.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure

A Statistical Prescription to Estimate Properly Normalized Distributions of Different Particle Species

We describe a statistical method to avoid biased estimation of the content of different particle species. We consider the case when the particle identification information strongly depends on some kinematical variables, whose distributions are unknown and different for each particles species. We show that the proposed procedure provides properly normalized and completely data-driven estimation of the unknown distributions without any a priori assumption on their functional form. Moreover, we demonstrate that the method can be generalized to any kinematical distribution of the particles

Trends In Australian Fresh Milk Supply Chains

The completion of the dairy industry deregulation process in June 2000 is transforming the fresh milk and fresh milk products supply chains in Australia. This transformation is set in an environment where markets are getting more complex and competitive, consumers more discerning and conscious about food safety and public policy is more focused on environment related issues. Supply chains are becoming more integrated, and innovation in product, process and supply chains is revolutionising the way products are being produced, distributed and marketed (Fearne & David 1999). This paper is based on research which, following supply chain management literature, identifies the success strategies in the dairy industry supply chains in Australia. The enquiry seeks to understand the nature and shape of supply chains and the exchange relationship between supply and value chains. The fieldwork for the research involved semi-structured interviews at middle to senior management level in the retail, processing, production and input market of the dairy industry supply chains. The data was managed and analysed using software NVivo ver. 2.0, which assists in identifying major themes and relationships between concepts in data

Success Strategies Being Implemented In Fresh Milk Supply Chains

Deregulation of the Australian dairy industry, and ensuing supermarket strategies are transforming the fresh milk supply chains. Factors such as increasing consumer awareness, concerns about food safety and environment, innovation, supply chain integration and rationalisation of supply base are adding momentum to this transformation. Milk processors in response to changing market expectations are getting proactive in their relationship with retailers across all aspects of business, innovating to generate sufficient returns from proprietary brands and strategically orienting themselves to develop a mixed customer portfolio and appropriate management structures to service that portfolio. Milk producers are expanding businesses to achieve production and cost efficiencies and strengthening contractual relationships on input and output side for a greater security

Single color and single flavor color superconductivity

We survey the non-locked color-flavor-spin channels for quark-quark (color superconducting) condensates in QCD, using an NJL model. We also study isotropic quark-antiquark (mesonic) condensates. We make mean-field estimates of the strength and sign of the self-interaction of each condensate, using four-fermion interaction vertices based on known QCD interactions. For the attractive quark pairing channels, we solve the mean-field gap equations to obtain the size of the gap as a function of quark density. We also calculate the dispersion relations for the quasiquarks, in order to see how fully gapped the spectrum of fermionic excitations will be. We use our results to specify the likely pairing patterns in neutral quark matter, and comment on possible phenomenological consequences

Non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering involving excitonic excitations

In a recent publication Larson \textit{et al.} reported remarkably clear dd-dd excitations for NiO and CoO measured with x-ray energies well below the transition metal KK edge. In this letter we demonstrate that we can obtain an accurate quantitative description based on a local many body approach. We find that the magnitude of q\vec{q} can be tuned for maximum sensitivity for dipole, quadrupole, etc. excitations. We also find that the direction of q\vec{q} with respect to the crystal axes can be used as an equivalent to polarization similar to electron energy loss spectroscopy, allowing for a determination of the local symmetry of the initial and final state based on selection rules. This method is more generally applicable and combined with the high resolution available, could be a powerful tool for the study of local distortions and symmetries in transition metal compounds including also buried interfaces
