    Mechanistic investigations of the S-nitrosothiol, peroxynitrous acid and thiol system

    S-Nitrosothiols have been found to undergo nucleophilic attack by the hydroperoxide anion to effect electrophilic nitrosation of the nucleophile. Peroxynitrite anion is formed in almost quantitative yields and the kinetics of the reaction examined, confirming attack through the deprotonated form of hydrogen peroxide. Conversely, under slightly acidic conditions peroxynitrous acid, the neutral form of peroxynitrite, has been shown to nitrosate an excess of thiol in an indirect pathway. Initially two moles of thiol are oxidised to the corresponding disulfide with the concomitant production of nitrite. Under mildly acidic conditions nitrous acid is formed which can then nitrosate excess thiol present. The reaction of a 2;1 excess of thiol over peroxynitrous acid has been shown to generate nitrous acid, which remains relatively stable, as there is no thiol remaining due to its oxidation to the disulfide. At higher acidities an additional source of nitrosation is uncovered which is explained in the terms of the formation of a protonated from of peroxynitrous acid with analogies toward the nitrous acidium ion. A comparison of the antioxidant potential of S-nitrosothiols versus thiols has also been examined using the powerful oxidant potassium bromate. Complex kinetic traces were generated but evidence was obtained which showed that S-nitrosothiols have enhanced antioxidant potential over thiols due to the nitroso moiety. The alkaline hydrolysis of S-nitrosothiols was also investigated with attack of the hydroxide ion postulated to proceed via nucleophilic attack on the sulfur atom of S-nitrosothiols. Also the reaction between S-nitrosothiols and phenolic compounds was found to proceed through different mechanisms depending on the ring substituents on the phenol

    Phytoremediation of heavy metal contaminated soil using different plant species

    A pot experiment was conducted to compare the plant biomass accumulation and heavy metal (HM) uptake by plant species grown in HM contaminated soils. The shoot dry weights of Eucalyptus camaldeulensis, Medicago sativum, and Brassica juncea grown in contaminated soils were reduced by 8, 5, and 3-fold, respectively, compared to the same plants grown in control soil. The Pb concentration in the shoots of M. sativum, E. camaldeulensis and B. juncea grown in contaminated soil was 8.7, 11.0, and 8.8-fold, respectively, higher than Pb concentration in plants grown in control soils. M. sativum and E. camaldeulensis accumulated higher Zn concentrations in roots (71 and 86 mg kg-1) and shoots (49 and 47 mg kg-1), respectively. Zn concentrations in the roots of M. sativum, E. camaldeulensis and B. juncea were higher than in the shoots by a factor of 1.4, 1.8, and 1.3-fold, respectively. The highest Cu concentration (81 and 37 mg kg-1 dwt) was obtained in root and shoot of M. sativum grown in contaminated soil, while the highest Cr concentration (133.9 mg/kg dwt) was determined in the root of E. camaldeulensis.     Integration of Uncertain Ramp Area Aircraft Trajectories and Generation of Optimal Taxiway Schedules at Charlotte Douglas (CLT) Airport

    The integration of aircraft maneuver characteristics into an optimal taxiway scheduling solution is challenging due to the uncertainties that are intrinsic to ramp area aircraft trajectories. To address the challenge, we build a stochastic model of ramp area aircraft trajectories that is used to generate a probabilistic measure of conflict within the Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) ramp area. Parameters of the conflict distributions are estimated and passed to a Mixed Integer Linear Program that solves for an optimal taxiway schedule constrained to be conflict free in the presence of trajectory uncertainties. Here we extend our previous research by accounting for departing and arriving aircraft whereas our prior formulation only accounted for departing aircraft

    Leaching of PAHs from rubber modified asphalt pavements

    The present study aimed to, for the first time, quantify the total content of 16 priority EPA PAHs in end-of-life tyre derived crumb rubber granulates and various manufactured rubberised asphalt mix designs. After identifying the availability of 16 EPA PAHs, the leaching behaviour of rubberised asphalt specimens, were evaluated using the Dynamic Surface Leaching Test (DSLT) based on CEN/TS 16637-2:2014 standard. This was prior to modelling the release mechanisms of PAHs by utilizing a mathematical diffusion-controlled leaching model. According to the results, the total content of 16 EPA PAHs in crumb rubber granulates ranged between 0.061 and 8.322 μg/g, which were associated with acenaphthene and pyrene, respectively. The total content of PAHs in rubberised asphalt specimens varied between 0.019 and 4.992 μg/g depending on the volume of crumb rubber granulates in the asphalt concrete mix design, and type of binder. Results of the leaching experiments revealed that the highest leached PAHs were benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene and naphthalene with a 64-days cumulative release per specimen surface area > 1 μg/m2. Acenaphthylene, fluoranthene, fluorene and indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene were released in cumulative concentrations between 0.1 and 1 μg/m2. The PAHs with a cumulative release potential below 0.1 μg/m2 during DSLT were benzo[a]anthracene, benzo[a]pyrene, benzo[g,h,i]perylene and chrysene. The diffusion coefficients, which were calculated by mathematical modelling of DSLT data, revealed that the leaching process of 16 EPA PAHs from surface of rubberised asphalt concrete mix designs fitted all the criteria set by the NEN 7345 standard for diffusion-controlled leaching during all stages of leaching experiments

    Prediction of Pushback Times and Ramp Taxi Times for Departures at Charlotte Airport

    When optimizing the takeoff sequence and schedule for departures at busy airports, it is important to accurately predict the taxi times from gate to runway because those are used to calculate the earliest possible takeoff times. Several airports like Charlotte Douglas International Airport show relatively long taxi times inside the ramp area with large variations, with respect to the travel times in the airport movement area. Also, the pushback process times have not been accurately modeled so far mainly due to the lack of accurate data. The recent deployment of the integrated arrival, departure, and surface traffic management system at Charlotte airport by NASA enables more accurate flight data in the airport surface operations to be obtained. Taking advantage of this system, actual pushback times and ramp taxi times from historical flight data at this airport are analyzed. Based on the analysis, a simple, data-driven prediction model is introduced for estimating pushback times and ramp transit times of individual departure flights. To evaluate the performance of this prediction model, several machine learning techniques are also applied to the same dataset. The prediction results show that the data-driven prediction model is as good as the machine learning algorithms when comparing various prediction performance metrics

    A meta-analysis of metal biosorption by suspended bacteria from three phyla

    Biosorption of heavy metals by bacterial biomass has been the subject of significant research interest in last decades due to its efficiency, relatively low cost and minimal negative effects for the surrounding environment. In this meta-analysis, the biosorption efficiencies of different bacterial strains for Cu(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), Cr(III), Mn(II), Pb(II) and Ni(II) were evaluated. Optimum conditions for the biosorption process such as initial metal concentration, temperature, pH, contact time, metal type, biomass dosage and bacterial phyla, were evaluated for each heavy metal. According to the results, the efficiencies of bacterial biomass for removal of heavy metal were as follows: Cd(II) > Cr(III) > Pb(II) > Zn(II) > Cu(II) > Ni(II) > Mn(II). Firmicute phyla showed the highest overall (living and dead) biosorption efficiency for heavy metals. Living biomass of Proteobacteria had the best biosorption performance. Living bacterial biomass was significantly more efficient in biosorption of Cu(II), Zn(II) and Pb(II) than dead biomass. The maximum biosorption efficiency of bacterial strains for Cd(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II) was achieved at pH values between 6 and 7.5. High temperatures (>35 °C) reduced the removal efficiencies for Cu(II) and Zn(II) and increased the efficiencies for Cd(II) and Cr(III) ions. The maximum biosorption efficiency of non-essential heavy metals occurred with short contact times (24 h). The mean biosorption capacity of bacterial biomass was between 71.26 and 125.88 mg g−1. No publication bias existed according to Egger’s and Begg’s test results
