Performance Evaluation of Wavelet-Coded OFDM on a 4.9 Gbps W-Band Radio-over-Fiber Link

Future generation mobile communications running on mm-wave frequencies will require great robustness against frequency selective channels. In this paper, we evaluate the transmission performance of 4.9 Gb/s wavelet-coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals on a 10 km fiber plus 58 m wireless radio-over-fiber link using a mm-wave radio frequency carrier. The results show that a 2 × 128 wavelet-coded OFDM system achieves a bit-error rate of 1e-4 with nearly 2.5 dB less signal-to-noise ratio than a convolutional coded OFDM system with equivalent spectral efficiency for 8 GHz-wide signals with 512 subcarriers on a carrier frequency of 86 GHz. Our findings confirm the Tzannes’ theory that wavelet coding enables high diversity gains with a low complexity receiver and, most notably, without compromising the system’s spectral efficiency

Caracterização experimental do comportamento de elementos estruturais parede-arco do Museu de Santa Joana em Aveiro

Com o objectivo de caracterizar o comportamento de elementos estruturais parede-arco do Museu de Aveiro, foram realizados ensaios laboratoriais e in situ, com vista ao desenvolvimento e calibração de um modelo numérico. A partir desse modelo foi possível estudar o comportamento deste tipo de elementos quando solicitado por cargas cíclicas. Foi assim possível aprofundar o conhecimento sobre os materiais usados na construção do Museu. Este artigo documenta os procedimentos adoptados e os resultados obtidos, quer dos ensaios, quer do modelo numérico

Vitamin D in women with class II/III obesity: Findings from the DieTBra trial

Objective: To assess the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and factors associated with serum vitamin D levels in adult women with class II/III obesity. Methods: We analysed baseline data from 128 adult women with class II/III obesity i.e. BMI ≥35 kg/m2 who participated in the DieTBra clinical trial. Sociodemographic, lifestyle, sun exposure, sunscreen, dietary intake of calcium and vitamin D, menopause, diseases, medication, and body composition data were analysed using multiple linear regression. Results: 128 women had mean BMI 45.53 ± 6.36, mean age 39.7 ± 8.75 kg/m2 and serum vitamin D 30.02 ng/ml ± 9.80. Vitamin D deficiency was 14.01%. There was no association between serum vitamin D levels and BMI, body fat percentage, total body fat and waist circumference. Age group (p = 0.004), sun exposure/day (p = 0.072), use of sunscreen (p = 0.168), inadequate calcium intake (p = 0.030), BMI (p = 0.192), menopause (p = 0.029) and lipid-lowering drugs (p = 0.150) were included in the multiple linear regression. The following remained associated with low serum vitamin D: being 40–49 years (p = 0.003); ≥50 years of age (p = 0.020) and inadequate calcium intake (p = 0.027). Conclusion: The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was lower than expected. Lifestyle, sun exposure and body composition were not associated. Age over 40 years and inadequate calcium intake were significantly associated with low serum vitamin D levels

Pegmatite fields of São Pedro de Ferros, Antônio Dias and Marilac, Minas Gerais State, Brazil: petrographic characterization

Pegmatites are rocks of granite or metastatic origin with gigantic crystals that are formed in fluid phase of the magmatic liquid enriched with incompatible elements, thats why they can be considered as gemstones and industrial minerals deposits. Both studied areas in the present article were genererated by anatexia process or partial fusion. The Jatobá Mine in the Pegmatitic Field of Ferros-Antônio Dias, in Santa Maria de Itabira, explores the aquamarine gem, a beryl variety, in a pegmatite that is located closer to the granite system of the quartz core and is docked in a gnaisse granitic rock from the Guanhães Complex. The collected sample was denominated like Quartzo alkali feldspar sienite in the Diagram QAPF. The blue color of the beryl is given by the intrusion of Fe. The Duas Cores Mining represents the Pegmatitic Field of Marilac, near Governador Valadares, and the exploration of bi-color tourmaline will begin soon. This mineral is in a very weathered pegmatite, positioned more at the end of the granite system and docked in the mica-schist rock of the São Tomé Formation. The sample was named Tonalite by the QAPF Diagram. The color variation of the explored gem is related to the enrichment of the Li element at the site
