Out-of-plane in situ cyclic testing of unreinforced stone masonry walls with distributed loads
The present paper reports an in situ experimental test campaign carried out on existing
buildings, in order to investigate the seismic behaviour of traditional masonry walls subject to
out-of-plane loads. For the testing proposes, an experimental test setup based on a selfequilibrated
scheme was developed and optimized to be applied in situ in two specimens on
original and strengthened conditions. The obtained results are presented and carefully
discussed namely from the reinforcement solutions’ efficiency point-of-view, as well as
compared to previous experimental data obtained for the same type of masonry walls.
Additionally, a simplified linearized displacement-based procedure was adapted in order to
characterize the nonlinear force-displacement relationship for unreinforced traditional
masonry walls and to analytically predict the experimental test results. The confrontation
between the experimental and the analytical results are presented and discussed
Combinatorial formulation of Ising model revisited
In 1952, Kac and Ward developed a combinatorial formulation for the two
dimensional Ising model which is another method of obtaining Onsager's formula
for the free energy per site in the thermodynamic limit of the model. Feynman
gave an important contribution to this formulation conjecturing a crucial
mathematical relation which completed Kac and Ward ideas. In this paper, the
method of Kac, Ward and Feynman for the free field Ising model in two
dimensions is reviewed in a selfcontained way.Comment: 27 pages, 17 figure
The Redner - Ben-Avraham - Kahng cluster system
We consider a coagulation model first introduced by Redner, Ben-Avraham and
Krapivsky in [Redner, Ben-Avraham, Kahng: Kinetics of 'cluster eating', J.
Phys. A: Math. Gen., 20 (1987), 1231-1238], the main feature of which is that
the reaction between a j-cluster and a k-cluster results in the creation of a
|j-k|-cluster, and not, as in Smoluchowski's model, of a (j+k)-cluster. In this
paper we prove existence and uniqueness of solutions under reasonably general
conditions on the coagulation coefficients, and we also establish
differenciability properties and continuous dependence of solutions. Some
interesting invariance properties are also proved. Finally, we study the
long-time behaviour of solutions, and also present a preliminary analysis of
their scaling behaviour.Comment: 24 pages. 2 figures. Dedicated to Carlos Rocha and Luis Magalhaes on

The Redner - Ben-Avraham - Kahng coagulation system with constant coefficients: the finite dimensional case
We study the behaviour as of solutions to the
Redner--Ben-Avraham--Kahng coagulation system with positive and compactly
supported initial data, rigorously proving and slightly extending results
originally established in [4] by means of formal arguments.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figur
