    Numerical model to account for the influence of infill masonry on the RC structures behaviour

    It is a common misconception considers that masonry infill walls in structural RC buildings can only increase the overall lateral load capacity, and, therefore, must always be considered beneficial to seismic performance. Recent earthquakes have showed numerous examples of severe damages or collapses of buildings caused by structural response modification induced by the non-structural masonry partitions. From a state-of-the-art review of the available numerical models for the representation of the infill masonry behaviour in structural response, it was proposed an upgraded model. The proposed model is inspired on the equivalent bi-diagonal compression strut model, and considers the non-linear behaviour of the infill masonry subjected to cyclic loads. The model was implemented and calibrated in a non-linear dynamic computer code, VISUALANL. In this paper, it is presented the proposed model and the results of the calibration analyses are briefly introduced and discussed

    One-loop calculations in Supersymmetric Lattice QCD

    We study the self energies of all particles which appear in a lattice regularization of supersymmetric QCD (N=1{\cal N}=1). We compute, perturbatively to one-loop, the relevant two-point Green's functions using both the dimensional and the lattice regularizations. Our lattice formulation employs the Wilson fermion acrion for the gluino and quark fields. The gauge group that we consider is SU(Nc)SU(N_c) while the number of colors, NcN_c and the number of flavors, NfN_f, are kept as generic parameters. We have also searched for relations among the propagators which are computed from our one-loop results. We have obtained analytic expressions for the renormalization functions of the quark field (ZψZ_\psi), gluon field (ZuZ_u), gluino field (ZλZ_\lambda) and squark field (ZA±Z_{A_\pm}). We present here results from dimensional regularization, relegating to a forthcoming publication our results along with a more complete list of references. Part of the lattice study regards also the renormalization of quark bilinear operators which, unlike the non-supersymmetric case, exhibit a rich pattern of operator mixing at the quantum level.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure, XII Quark Confinement proceeding

    Out-of-plane seismic response of stone masonry walls: experimental and analytical study of real piers

    This paper presents the application of an existing simplified displacement-based procedure to the characterization of the nonlinear force-displacement relationship for the out-of-plane behaviour of unreinforced traditional masonry walls. According to this procedure, tri-linear models based on three different energy based criteria were constructed and confronted with three experimental tests on existing stone masonry constructions. Moreover, a brief introduction is presented regarding the main characteristics of the in situ cyclic testing recently carried out using distributed loads, as well as results obtained during the experimental campaigns performed. The comparison between the experimental and the analytical results are presented and discussed

    Control mechanisms and perceived organizational support: exploring the relationship between new and traditional forms of control

    Purpose: Taking into account the need to make a clearer distinction between traditional and new organizational controls, this paper aims to investigate similarities and differences between those two forms and explore the extent to which new forms of control can be operationalized from a quantitative point of view. Design/methodology/approach: Suggesting that new organizational controls can be understood also in light of quantitative paradigms, we develop and test a scale to measure the existence of these types of controls, examine its construct validity and evaluate its convergent validity. Findings: The theoretical dimensions of new controls have empirical correspondence. Input and behaviour controls are strongly associated with the promotion of values and beliefs in organizations. New controls become responsible for employees’ acceptance of companies’ management, an aspect measured by Perceived-Organizational-Support (POS)

    Structural optimisation problem in support to building retrofitting decision

    Various analysis methods, either linear elastic or non-linear, static or dynamic, are available for the performance analysis of existing buildings. Despite its advantages, it must be admitted that non-linear time history analysis can frequently become overly complex and impractical for general use as a first assessment. Simplified models, as the Capacity Spectrum Method, are frequently not able to accurately assess irregular structures. Considering these limitations, it is proposed and evaluated a simplified MDOF non-linear dynamic model, accounting for non-linear storey behaviour and storey damping. Based on the MDOF non-linear dynamic model, were developed optimization algorithms for the redesign of existing non-seismically designed structures. The optimization procedure searches for the optimum storey strengthening distribution (strength, stiffness or damping) in order to meet specific performance requirements, in terms of maximum inter-storey drift for a given seismic demand level. Numerical examples are presented in order to illustrate the capability of methodology
