Finger behavior of a shear thinning fluid in a Hele-Shaw cell

We make a theoretical study of the behavior of a simple fluid displacing a shear thinning fluid confined in a Hele-Shaw cell. To study the Saffman-Taylor instability when the displaced fluid is non Newtonian we face the problem of having a field which is non laplacian. By means of an hodographic transformation we are able to solve the problem in the case of weak shear thinning while taking into account the non laplacian character of the equation. Our results predict that the finger width decreases towards zero for small values of the surface tension parameter which is inversely proportional to the finger velocity.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, RevTeX, to appear in Phys. IT-Enabled Service Innovation—A Field Study of Agile Approaches to Value Co-Creation

Service organizations need to respond rapidly to both changes in the market and customer expectations. One way of accomplishing this is through service innovation enacted to achieve competitive advantage. This study applies a service-dominant logic (SDL) lens to describe how a service organization may achieve service innovation through value co-creation that is facilitated by agile distributed methods. Literature on value co-creation is somewhat limited; although a few studies have provided guidance on what is needed to achieve value co-creation, no study has yet presented how this might be achieved. Therefore, using a single-site case study in the context of a large service organization, this study examines how value is co-created and the role that agile distributed methods play in this process. This research seeks to contribute to practice by providing service organizations with recommendations for achieving value co-creation. It contributes to theory by advancing our understanding of value co-creation processes; moreover, by using the context of an SDL, it presents a framework that maps elements of service innovation to agile distributed practices

Language Quality in Information Systems Development – Analyzing the Emergence of Requirements in Natural Language Processes

    Get PDF
A central challenge in information systems development (ISD) is the question how meaningful and coherent requirements can be developed as a consensual result of the interaction between analysts and clients. As language-based communication is the main venue for the system‟s conceptualization, we assume that the understanding of how requirements emerge on the micro level of interaction is of critical importance. We claim that the quality of the communication between the different stakeholders depends on the ability to manage the question of how people deal with language in practice and reach consensus in the concrete ISD process. Therefore, in this paper we adapt the concept of quality to the question of how a common language is built in the ISD process. After defining a set of reasonable language quality dimensions, we apply our results to concrete observation cases from an ISD project and obtain insight beneficial to researchers and practitioners alike

    Dance and Sport

The purpose of this research is to investigate dance and sport as two individual yet intertwining fields. Areas of inquiry include the artistic/aesthetic sports of the Olympic Games particularly rhythmic gymnastics, synchronized swimming, and ice dancing; the artistry and athleticism of cheerleading, dance team, and dancesport; the athleticism in dance companies such as STREB, Pilobolus, Bandaloop, and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre; and the athleticism in the dance training system of Lester Horton. Similarities in corporeal and intellectual practices of athletes and dancers are also explored as they manifest in cross-training, somatics, dance and sports medicine, higher education, and collaboration. The culmination of my research is the creation of Sound Mind Sound Body, a choreographic work bringing a team of dancers together to collaborate and train as athletes as well as performing artists

IS project evaluation methodology - Science or art?

As language is the venue for the concretisation of concepts and entities in information systems development (ISD), language unambiguousness is understood as an ideal basis for the success of the consolidation process in information systems development. In contrast, a fundamental postulation of language theories is the inherent ambiguity of natural language. Therefore, the analysis of how language consensus can be reached in an effective manner is of particular interest for collaborative ISD. We claim that the effectiveness of ISD depends on the ability to manage the question of how people deal with language in practice and reach consensus in the concrete ISD process. This requirement leads us to the point of emergence of language: the language interaction setting. Hence, we analysed the language interaction in an ISD project and identified different language interaction levels which serve as orientation for specific interventions in an interaction setting, enabling an intensification of consensus negotiation

    Engine Cooling & Model Verification

The automotive cooling system and thermal control strategy are important in order to reduce the pollution emission, extend the life of the components and reduce the fuel consumption. The scope of this thesis is to achieve a minimum model that works properly and a small library with the necessary components that the model could be made with. This will be the base for a future Engine Cooling library that covers all the components demanded by Daimler Chrysler. This thesis is the description of the development of a basic Engine Cooling library and some test models. A simple engine cooling system is built and produces reasonable results. The given data to test the Engine Cooling model is for a complete model, for this reason the test of this library is made checking that the results are reasonable. Some simple components were tested with real data separately, but not in the complete Engine Cooling system. The thesis work is a good base for a complete and useful Engine Cooling library. The next steps to follow are to build a more complex and realistic engine and radiator models. Some components will have to be added like holes, pipes and different kinds of bends

ORGANIZATION DEVELOPMENT INTERVENTIONS ON THE GENERAL MANAGERIAL SKILLS OF COMMERCIAL BANK EXECUTIVES: A CASE OF KENYA COMMERCIAL BANK LIMITED IN KENYA, EAST AFRICA

This study aimed to determine the effect of organization development Interventions (ODI) on the general managerial skills of the Bank Executives at Kenya Commercial Bank Limited (KCB) in Kenya, East Africa. It utilized an analytical descriptive action type research. Ninety eight (98) executives of the bank were the research subjects who comprised senior managers from head office, branch managers, section heads and supervisors of the bank. Universal sampling was done in identifying research subjects. The study was based on the theory advanced by Kraut et al (1989) who theorized that managers to be effective, they must have a clear understanding of different skills that are important in managerial role. These skills enabled managers to effectively coordinate work, communicate expectations, delivery of feedback, job transitions, training and career development activities. Preassessment was conducted to assess the general managerial skills of the bank executives and diagnose problem. The instrument was administered to the ninety eight (98) subjects who are presently employed in KCB Nairobi Branches. The results of pre-assessments on general managerial skills were good as indicated by the factor average rating of (μ 2.816) but could be improved. Implementation of the planned interventions was guided by the schedule of activities. Seventy seven executives of KCB participated to improve performance. Understanding change through other people's eyes by Vicki Schneider was conducted to provide insight on what is the importance of change. After the implementation of organization interventions, observation over a period of six months was done. Post assessment evaluation on the general managerial skills was done in January and February 2010. The result of the study revealed that there was a significant increase of the mean score in the post assessment in all the eight factors of the general managerial skills. There was improvement after the intervention in the general managerial skills as indicated by the increased mean from (μ 2.816) to (μ3.959). The organization development interventions implemented were successful in improving the managerial skills in KCB as reflected in the increase of the mean ratings after intervention. The obtained t-value in general managerial skills was 5.149, which was greater than the critical value of 1.960. This meant that the null hypothesis was rejected. The organization development interventions implemented were successful in improving the general managerial skills of bank executives. The Organization Development Interventions yields a significant positive change in all the general managerial skills of the Bank Executives
