Constraining anomalous Higgs interactions
The recently announced Higgs discovery marks the dawn of the direct probing
of the electroweak symmetry breaking sector. Sorting out the dynamics
responsible for electroweak symmetry breaking now requires probing the Higgs
interactions and searching for additional states connected to this sector. In
this work we analyze the constraints on Higgs couplings to the standard model
gauge bosons using the available data from Tevatron and LHC. We work in a
model--independent framework expressing the departure of the Higgs couplings to
gauge bosons by dimension--six operators. This allows for independent
modifications of its couplings to gluons, photons and weak gauge bosons while
still preserving the Standard Model (SM) gauge invariance. Our results indicate
that best overall agreement with data is obtained if the cross section of Higgs
production via gluon fusion is suppressed with respect to its SM value and the
Higgs branching ratio into two photons is enhanced, while keeping the
production and decays associated to couplings to weak gauge bosons close to
their SM prediction.Comment: v3: Added acknowledgment to FP7 ITN INVISIBLES (Marie Curie Actions

Tuberculosis in sub-Saharan Africa: opportunities, challenges, and change in the era of antiretroviral treatment.
Rapid scale-up of antiretroviral treatment programmes is happening in Africa, driven by international advocacy and policy directives and supported by unprecedented donor funding and technical assistance. This welcome development offers hope to millions of HIV-infected Africans, among whom tuberculosis is the major cause of serious illness and death. Little in the way of HIV diagnosis or care was previously offered to patients with tuberculosis, by either national tuberculosis or AIDS control programmes, with tuberculosis services focused exclusively on diagnosis and treatment of rising numbers of patients. Tuberculosis control in Africa has yet to adapt to the new climate of antiretroviral availability. Many barriers exist, from drug interactions to historic differences in the way that tuberculosis and HIV are perceived, but failure to successfully integrate HIV and tuberculosis control will threaten the viability of both programmes. Here, we review tuberculosis epidemiology in Africa and policy implications of HIV/AIDS treatment scale-up
Modeling of radiation damage in silicon solar cells
One MeV electron irradiation produces preponderantly isolated vacancy interstitial pairs. If neither of these defects is mobile, the concentration of each grows linearly with fluence. Annealing of damage depends on the nature of the damage. Vacancy interstitial pairs which are bound by an interaction such that they mutually annihilate rather than dissociate are termed close pairs; close pair recovery usually occurs at a lower temperature than the temperature at which long distance defect migration occurs. Annealing of the remaining frozen in damage occurs when a temperature is reached where the vacancy or interstitial is mobile; usually the interstitial is more mobile than the vacancy. The recovery occurs in two regimes which may be resoluable
A Spectropolarimetric Atlas of Seyfert 1 Galaxies
We present optical spectropolarimetry of the nuclei of 36 Seyfert 1 galaxies,
obtained with the William Herschel and the Anglo-Australian Telescopes from
1996 to 1999. In 20 of these, the optical emission from the active nucleus is
intrinsically polarized. We have measured a significant level of polarization
in a further 7 objects but these may be heavily contaminated by Galactic
interstellar polarization. The intrinsically polarized Seyfert 1s exhibit a
variety of characteristics, with the average polarization ranging from < 0.5 to
5 per cent and many showing variations in both the degree and position angle of
polarization across the broad H alpha emission line. We identify a small group
of Seyfert 1s that exhibit polarization properties similar to those of Seyfert
2 galaxies in which polarized broad-lines have been discovered. These objects
represent direct observational evidence that a Seyfert 2-like far-field polar
scattering region is also present in Seyfert 1s. Several other objects have
features that can be explained in terms of equatorial scattering of line
emission from a rotating disk. We propose that much of the diversity in the
polarization properties of Seyfert galaxies can be understood in terms of a
model involving both equatorial and polar scattering, the relative importance
of the two geometries as sources of polarized light being determined
principally by the inclination of the system axis to the line-of-sight.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS (28 pages, 25 figures
Wheatstone bridge configuration for evaluation of plasmonic energy transfer
We propose an internal (on-chip) Wheatstone bridge configuration to evaluate the efficiency of near-field transducers (NFT) as used in heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR). The electric field enhancement between the transducer and the image plane is monitored by measuring the resistance of metal electrodes composing the image plane. The absorption of the enhanced electric field causes an increase in the metal temperature, and thereby, in its resistance whose variation is monitored with an internal Wheatstone bridge which is accurately balanced in the absence of the electric field
