    Informed consent and the transmission of sexual disease: Dadson Revivified

    This article examines the impact of the decisions in R v Dica (2004) and R v Konzani (2005) on the extent of the defence of consent. As well as analysing the impact of the decisions on the extent of the defence where a defendant faces criminal liability for the transmission of sexual disease, it also considers and examines the wider issue of whether the presence or absence of consent forms part of the actus reus of the relevant assault offence or whether it is a separate and independent element that stands outside of the conduct component of the offence. It is argued that recent developments have given insufficient consideration to accepted doctrine and revived much criticised principles by focusing on unknown circumstances of justification rather than the defendant's state of knowledge and mind

    Spin 1 inversion: a Majorana tensor force for deuteron alpha scattering

    We demonstrate, for the first time, successful S-matrix to potential inversion for spin one projectiles with non-diagonal SlljS^j_{ll'} yielding a TRT_{\rm R} interaction. The method is a generalization of the iterative-perturbative, IP, method. We present a test case indicating the degree of uniqueness of the potential. The method is adapted, using established procedures, into direct observable to potential inversion, fitting σ\sigma, iT11{\rm i}T_{11}, T20T_{20}, T21T_{21} and T22T_{22} for d + alpha scattering over a range of energies near 10 MeV. The TRT_{\rm R} interaction which we find is very different from that proposed elsewhere, both real and imaginary parts being very different for odd and even parity channels.Comment: 7 pages Revtex, 4 ps figure

    Scattering Theory for Quantum Hall Anyons in a Saddle Point Potential

    We study the theory of scattering of two anyons in the presence of a quadratic saddle-point potential and a perpendicular magnetic field. The scattering problem decouples in the centre-of-mass and the relative coordinates. The scattering theory for the relative coordinate encodes the effects of anyon statistics in the two-particle scattering. This is fully characterized by two energy-dependent scattering phase shifts.     A review of satellite time-transfer technology: Accomplishments and future applications

    The research accomplishments by NASA in meeting the needs of the space program for precise time in satellite tracking are presented. As a major user of precise time signals for clock synchronization of NASA's worldwide satellite tracking networks, the agency provides much of the necessary impetus for the development of stable frequency sources and time synchronization technology. The precision time required for both satellite tracking and space science experiments has increased at a rate of about one order of magnitude per decade from 1 millisecond in the 1950's to 100 microseconds during the Apollo era in the 1960's to 10 microseconds in the 1970's. For the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System, satellite timing requirements will be extended to 1 microsecond and below. These requirements are needed for spacecraft autonomy and data packeting

    This paper discusses the concept of practice-near research in terms of the emotional and epistemological challenges that arise from the researcher coming 'near' enough to other people for psychological processes to ensue. These may give rise in the researcher to confusion, anxiety and doubt about who is who and what is what; but also to the possibility of real emotional and relational depth in the research process. Using illustrations from three social work doctoral research projects undertaken by students at the Tavistock Clinic and the University of East London the paper examines four themes that seem to the author to be central to meaningful practice-near research undertaken in a spirit of true emotional and epistemological open-mindedness: the smell of the real; losing our minds; the inevitability of personal change; and the discovery of complex particulars

    Density waves and supersolidity in rapidly rotating atomic Fermi gases

    We study theoretically the low-temperature phases of a two-component atomic Fermi gas with attractive s-wave interactions under conditions of rapid rotation. We find that, in the extreme quantum limit, when all particles occupy the lowest Landau level, the normal state is unstable to the formation of "charge" density wave (CDW) order. At lower rotation rates, when many Landau levels are occupied, we show that the low-temperature phases can be supersolids, involving both CDW and superconducting order.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, uses feynmp.st
