Results from the CDMS II Experiment
I report recent results and the status of the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search
(CDMS II) experiment at the Soudan Underground Laboratory in Minnesota, USA. A
blind analysis of data taken by 30 detectors between October 2006 and July 2007
found zero events consistent with WIMPs elastically scattering in our Ge
detectors. This resulted in an upper limit on the spin-independent,
WIMP-nucleon cross section of 6.6 x 10^-44 cm^2 (4.6 x 10^-44 cm^2 when
combined with our previous results) at the 90% C.L. for a WIMP of mass 60
GeV/c^2. In March 2009 data taking with CDMS II stopped in order to install the
first of 5 SuperTowers of detectors for the SuperCDMS Soudan project. Analysis
of data taken between August 2007 and March 2009 is ongoing.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to appear in the proceedings of the TAUP09

Elimination of Supply Harmonics: An Evolution of Current Compensation and Active Filtering Methods
The price of the extensive use of power electronic devices is becoming clear: increasing harmonic pollution. This survey takes a brief look at background information related to harmonics, including their sources, effects, and characteristics. Then, the evolution of the harmonics elimination approaches of current compensation and active filtering, which are becoming more feasible due to research and technological improvements, are discussed in order to give some insight into the directions that research is taking

Significant enhancement of irreversibility field in clean-limit bulk MgB2
Low resistivity ("clean") MgB2 bulk samples annealed in Mg vapor show an
increase in upper critical field Hc2(T) and irreversibility field Hirr(T) by a
factor of 2 in both transport and magnetic measurements. The best sample
displayed Hirr above 14 T at 4.2 K and 6 T at 20 K. These changes were
accompanied by an increase of the 40 K resistivity from 1.0 to 18 microohm-cm
and a lowering of the resistivity ratio from 15 to 3, while the critical
temperature Tc decreased by only 1-2 K. These results point the way to make

Attachment Styles, Social Skills, and Depression in College Women
Attachment styles, social skills, and depression were studied in 93 college women using the Relationship Questionnaire (K. Bartholomew & L M. Horowitz, 1991), the Beck Depression Inventory-ll (AT. Beck, R.A. Steer, & G. K. Brown, 1996), and the Interpersonal Competence Questionnaire (D. Buhrmester,W. Furman, M.T.Wittenberg, & H.T. Reis, 1988).The self and other attachment models and the social skills of negative assertion, self-disclosure, and conflict management all correlated with depression. Conflict management partially mediated the relationship between attachment self-model and depression. Implications for counseling are discussed
Tricritical Phenomena at the Cerium Transition
The isostructural transition in the
CeLaTh system is measured as a function of La alloying
using specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, thermal
expansivity/striction measurements. A line of discontinuous transitions, as
indicated by the change in volume, decreases exponentially from 118 K to close
to zero with increasing La doping and the transition changes from being
first-order to continuous at a critical concentration . At the tricritical point, the coefficient of the linear term in the
specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility start to increase
rapidly near = 0.14 and gradually approaches large values at =0.35
signifying that a heavy Fermi-liquid state evolves at large doping. Near ,
the Wilson ratio, , has a value of 3.0, signifying the presence of
magnetic fluctuations. Also, the low-temperature resistivity shows that the
character of the low-temperature Fermi-liquid is changing
On two problems in graph Ramsey theory
We study two classical problems in graph Ramsey theory, that of determining
the Ramsey number of bounded-degree graphs and that of estimating the induced
Ramsey number for a graph with a given number of vertices.
The Ramsey number r(H) of a graph H is the least positive integer N such that
every two-coloring of the edges of the complete graph contains a
monochromatic copy of H. A famous result of Chv\'atal, R\"{o}dl, Szemer\'edi
and Trotter states that there exists a constant c(\Delta) such that r(H) \leq
c(\Delta) n for every graph H with n vertices and maximum degree \Delta. The
important open question is to determine the constant c(\Delta). The best
results, both due to Graham, R\"{o}dl and Ruci\'nski, state that there are
constants c and c' such that 2^{c' \Delta} \leq c(\Delta) \leq 2^{c \Delta
\log^2 \Delta}. We improve this upper bound, showing that there is a constant c
for which c(\Delta) \leq 2^{c \Delta \log \Delta}.
The induced Ramsey number r_{ind}(H) of a graph H is the least positive
integer N for which there exists a graph G on N vertices such that every
two-coloring of the edges of G contains an induced monochromatic copy of H.
Erd\H{o}s conjectured the existence of a constant c such that, for any graph H
on n vertices, r_{ind}(H) \leq 2^{c n}. We move a step closer to proving this
conjecture, showing that r_{ind} (H) \leq 2^{c n \log n}. This improves upon an
earlier result of Kohayakawa, Pr\"{o}mel and R\"{o}dl by a factor of \log n in

Magnetic polarons and magnetoresistance in EuB6
EuB6 is a low carrier density ferromagnet which exhibits large
magnetoresistance, positive or negative depending on temperature. The formation
of magnetic polarons just above the magnetic critical temperature has been
suggested by spin-flip Raman scattering experiments. We find that the fact that
EuB6 is a semimetal has to be taken into account to explain its electronic
properties, including magnetic polarons and magnetoresistance.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figur
Gravity localization on thick branes: a numerical approach
We introduce a numerical procedure to investigate the spectrum of massive
modes and its contribution for gravity localization on thick branes. After
considering a model with an analytically known Schroedinger potential, we
present the method and discuss its applicability. With this procedure we can
study several models even when the Schroedinger potential is not known
analytically. We discuss both the occurrence of localization of gravity and the
correction to the Newtonian potential given by the massive modes.Comment: 22 pages, 12 figure
