How Serious are Methodological Issues in Surveys? A Reexamination of the Clarence Thomas Polls^T
Opinion polling procedures allow for reasonable inferences about attitude changes. We examined this contention using surveys about the nomination of Clarence Thomas. In this situation, prior theory allowed us to predict the direction of changes, surveys had been conducted by a number of organizations, and substantial information was available about the methodology used in the surveys. Informal carer role in the personalization of assistive solutions connected to aspirations of people with dementia
The increase in the elderly population over the last thirty years with consequent increase in the number of people living with dementia (PwD) has resulted in a research focus on improving quality-of-life and well-being beyond basic needs, to address psychosocial needs and to provide technological support for these. As part of a UK industry-led, publically supported, project Connect-ing Assistive Solutions to Aspirations (CASA), research is being conducted to inform the design of assistive technology packages that are aspiration-led. Focus groups were conducted with informal carers (family relatives) of persons with dementia to elicit views on technology use for increasing independence of PwD (with a carer living at home). The focus groups were analysed through thematic analysis and the results have been used to produce personas and scenarios for creation of demonstrator assisted living packages
Development of an airline revenue capability model for aircraft design
Typically value based approaches to the design of civil and commercial aircraft, be they net present value, surplus value, or any other utility based approach focus solely on the difference in cost between the alternatives, neglecting changes in revenue which might occur between the two concepts. Alternatively, if they do have a revenue focus, it is based upon simple relationships between payload capacity and revenue, assuming a either a fixed protfimargin or fixed yield. This approach works well when comparing two similar or closely related concepts, but falls apart when investigating more radically di erent systems, e.g. a cruise eficient short take-o and landing concept. By using a value based approach it is relatively simple to structure a decision model to incorporate changing revenue capability. However, the ability to investigate differences in design is very much dependent upon the revenue model and assumptions that are made. If the revenue elasticity is the same forthe two concepts then there is no benefi t in using a variable revenue approach. However, in the cases where the elasticity is different, the revenue approach offers the potential to more properly investigate some fundamentally different alternative concepts. © 2010 by Peter Sutcliffe & Peter Hollingsworth. Rule-Based Forecasting: Using Judgment in Time-Series Extrapolation
Rule-Based Forecasting (RBF) is an expert system that uses judgment to develop and apply rules for combining extrapolations. The judgment comes from two sources, forecasting expertise and domain knowledge. Forecasting expertise is based on more than a half century of research. Domain knowledge is obtained in a structured way; one example of domain knowledge is managers= expectations about trends, which we call “causal forces.” Time series are described in terms of 28 conditions, which are used to assign weights to extrapolations. Empirical results on multiple sets of time series show that RBF produces more accurate forecasts than those from traditional extrapolation methods or equal-weights combined extrapolations. RBF is most useful when it is based on good domain knowledge, the domain knowledge is important, the series is well behaved (such that patterns can be identified), there is a strong trend in the data, and the forecast horizon is long. Under ideal conditions, the error for RBF’s forecasts were one-third less than those for equal-weights combining. When these conditions are absent, RBF neither improves nor harms forecast accuracy. Some of RBF’s rules can be used with traditional extrapolation procedures. LARP7 family proteins have conserved function in telomerase assembly
Understanding the intricacies of telomerase regulation is crucial due to the potential health benefits of modifying its activity. Telomerase is composed of an RNA component and reverse transcriptase. However, additional factors required during biogenesis vary between species. Here we have identified fission yeast Lar7 as a member of the conserved LARP7 family, which includes the Tetrahymena telomerase-binding protein p65 and human LARP7. We show that Lar7 has conserved RNA-recognition motifs, which bind telomerase RNA to protect it from exosomal degradation. In addition, Lar7 is required to stabilise the association of telomerase RNA with the protective complex LSm2-8, and telomerase reverse transcriptase. Lar7 remains a component of the mature telomerase complex and is required for telomerase localisation to the telomere. Collectively, we demonstrate that Lar7 is a crucial player in fission yeast telomerase biogenesis, similarly to p65 in Tetrahymena, and highlight the LARP7 family as a conserved factor in telomere maintenance
