    Ultrastructural study of spermatozoa of the neotropical lizards, Tropidurus semitaeniatus and Tropidurus torquatus (Squamata, Tropiduridae)

    A detailed description of the sperm ultrastructure of Tropidurus semitaeniatus and T. torquatus is provided. Mature spermatozoa of T. semitaeniatus and T. torquatus are filiform and characterized by: apical portion of acrosome depressed; perforatorium single; epinuclear lucent zone well developed; midpiece short; mitochondria columnar; midpiece with three sets of alternating ring structures and mitochondria (rs1/m1, rs2/m2, rs3/m3); nuclear shoulders rounded; nucleus elongate; fibres 3 and 8 enlarged; and fibrous sheath in midpiece. Spermatozoa ofTropidurus are unusual in possessing a unilateral electron-lucent ridge at the surface of the acrosome and an epinuclear electron-lucent zone. The two species are very similar, differing in details such as degree of acrosome flattening, presence of bulging at nuclear base, and arrangement of microtubules in the endpiece.     Sources of intraspecific variation in the isotopic niche of a semi-aquatic predator in a human-modified landscape

    Intraspecific variation modulates patterns of resource use by species, potentially affecting the structure and stability of food webs. In human-modified landscapes, habitat disturbance modifies trophic interactions and intraspecific niche variation, impacting population persistence. Here, we investigated the relationship of sex, ontogeny, and habitat factors with the trophic niche of Caiman crocodilus in an agricultural landscape. We evaluated temporal variation in the trophic niche parameters using carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analysis from different body tissues. We found that caimans exploit the same carbon and nitrogen pools through time, with low isotopic variability between seasons, partly due to the slow isotope turnover rates of tissues in crocodilians. Conversely, the trophic niche of caimans varied across habitats, but with no evidence of a difference between natural and anthropogenic habitats. It apparently results from the influence of habitat suitability, connectivity, and caiman movements during the foraging. Our findings highlight the broader niches of juvenile caimans relative to adults, possibly in response of territorialism and opportunistic foraging strategy. Although using similar resources, females had a larger niche than males, probably associated with foraging strategies during nesting. Considering the sex and body size categories, caimans occupied distinct isotopic regions in some habitats, indicating apparent niche segregation. Ontogenetic trophic shifts in the isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) depended on sex, leading to resource partitioning that can potentially reduce intraspecific competition. Decision-makers and stakeholders should consider the trophic dynamics of sex and body size groups for the sustainable management and conservation of caiman populations, which implies in the maintenance of wetland habitats and landscape heterogeneity in the Formoso River floodplain

    Spatial-Temporal Dynamics of Neotropical Velvet Ant (Hymenoptera: Mutillidae) Communities Along a Forest-Savanna Gradient

    Understanding how and why biological communities are organized over space and time is a major challenge and can aid biodiversity conservation in times of global changes. Herein, spatial-temporal variation in the structure of velvet ant communities was examined along a forest-savanna gradient in the Brazilian Cerrado to assess the roles of environmental filters and interspecific interactions upon community assembly. Velvet ants were sampled using 25 arrays of Y-shaped pitfall traps with drift fences for one year along an environmental gradient from cerrado sensu stricto (open canopy, warmer, drier) to cerradão (closed canopy, cooler, moister). Dataloggers installed on each trap recorded microclimate parameters throughout the study period. The effects of spatial distances, microclimate parameters and shared ancestry on species abundances and turnover were assessed with canonical correspondence analysis, generalized dissimilarity modelling and variance components analysis. Velvet ant diversity and abundance were higher in the cerrado sensu stricto and early in the wet season. There was pronounced compositional turnover along the environmental gradient, and temporal variation in richness and abundance was stronger than spatial variation. The dry season blooming of woody plant species fosters host abundance and, subsequently, velvet ant captures. Species were taxonomically clustered along the gradient with Sphaeropthalmina (especially Traumatomutilla spp.) and Pseudomethocina more associated, respectively, with cerrado sensu stricto and cerradão. This suggests a predominant role of environmental filters on community assemble, with physiological tolerances and host preferences being shared among members of the same lineages. Induced environmental changes in Cerrado can impact communities of wasps and their hosts with unpredictable consequences upon ecosystem functioning and services

    Cryptic, sympatric diversity in Tegu lizards of the Tupinambis teguixin Group (Squamata, Sauria, Teiidae) and the description of three new species

    Tegus of the genera Tupinambis and Salvator are the largest Neotropical lizards and the most exploited clade of Neotropical reptiles. For three decades more than 34 million tegu skins were in trade, about 1.02 million per year. The genus Tupinambis is distributed in South America east of the Andes, and currently contains four recognized species, three of which are found only in Brazil. However, the type species of the genus, T. teguixin, is known from Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guyana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela (including the Isla de Margarita). Here we present molecular and morphological evidence that this species is genetically divergent across its range and identify four distinct clades some of which are sympatric. The occurrence of cryptic sympatric species undoubtedly exacerbated the nomenclatural problems of the past. We discuss the species supported by molecular and morphological evidence and increase the number of species in the genus Tupinambis to seven. The four members of the T. teguixin group continue to be confused with Salvator merianae, despite having a distinctly different morphology and reproductive mode. All members of the genus Tupinambis are CITES Appendix II. Yet, they continue to be heavily exploited, under studied, and confused in the minds of the public, conservationists, and scientists

    Multilocus environmental adaptation and population structure in the Cerrado gecko Gymnodactylus amarali (Sauria, Phyllodactylidae) from Serra da Mesa Hydroelectric Plant, Central Brazil

    Contrasting environmental conditions across geographic space might promote divergent selection, making adaptation to local biotic and abiotic conditions necessary for populations to survive. In order to understand how populations adapt to different environmental conditions, studies of local adaptation have been largely used as an interface to address ecological and evolutionary questions. Here, we studied populations of Gymnodactylus amarali (Phyllodactylidae) isolated in rapidly created artificial islands. We combined a genotyping-by-sequence (GBS) survey and redundancy analyses (RDA) to investigate genotype–environment associations (GEA), while DAPC, Fst, and Admixture analyses were used to determine genetic structure. Our hypothesis is that G. amarali populations on the islands are going through a local adaptation process and consequently becoming genetically different from the populations on the mainland. Our results indicate that geographic and environmental differences are related to genetic variation, as we detected the presence of two or three distinct genetic lineages in Serra da Mesa, Minaçu, and Colinas do Sul. Fst analysis shows moderate isolation between Serra da Mesa and Minaçu (0.082). The RDA pointed out potential local genetic signal correlated with temperature and precipitation. We identified 230 candidate loci associated with the environment and at least two locally structured subpopulations (Serra da Mesa and Minaçu) show significant association with environmental variation

    Herpetofauna of protected areas in the Caatinga II: Serra da Capivara National Park, Piauí, Brazil

    We provide a list of amphibians, lizards, chelonians, and snakes collected during a 30-day expedition to the Serra da Capivara National Park, Piauí State, Brazil. Thirty-seven pitfall trap arrays composed of 4 buckets each, along with glue traps, funnel traps, and haphazard searches, were used to sample the herpetofaunal diversity. We recorded 17 species of lizards, 1 caecilian, 1 chelonian, 7 frogs, and 11 snakes. Rarefaction curves suggest that local biodiversity is still underestimated. An atypical drought during the period of study may have contributed to lower captures of certain groups, especially amphibians and snakes. The presence of water-dependent and forest-dependent species within local canyons (“Boqueirões”) suggests that these areas harbor faunas associated with relictual rainforest fragments and need to be better studied and managed accordinglyFil: Barbosa de Queiroga Calvacanti, Lucas.     Bayesian spatial-temporal model for the diffusion of SARS-CoV2 in Brazilian municipalities

    A COVID-19 provocou uma grave crise de proporções mundiais, sem precedentes nesse século (WHO, 2020). Alguns governos, o setor produtivo e a sociedade em geral buscam informações e soluções de curto prazo para enfrentar e mitigar os impactos causados pela pandemia (ANDERSON et al., 2020). Para o efetivo sucesso das ações de combate e mitigação, é necessário o entendimento da difusão da doença, tanto na escala temporal como espacial (SHINDE et al., 2020). Entretanto, existem três importantes lacunas para o rápido desenvolvimento de modelos acurados da difusão da Covid-19 no Brasil: (1) o acesso às bases de dados relevantes, (2) a identificação dos principais fatores de risco e (3) o uso de abordagens espaço-temporais para todos os municípios. Apesar da rápida multiplicação de modelos preditivos do crescimento do número de infectados, são incipientes as abordagens espaço-temporais para prever, no curto prazo, as regiões de maior risco. Propomos a modelagem da variação espaço-temporal de casos e óbitos de Covid-19 nos municípios brasileiros, utilizando inferência bayesiana

    Tree diversity and above-ground biomass in the South America Cerrado biome and their conservation implications

    Less than half of the original two million square kilometers of the Cerrado vegetation remains standing, and there are still many uncertainties as to how to conserve and prioritize remaining areas effectively. A key limitation is the continuing lack of geographically-extensive evaluation of ecosystem-level properties across the biome. Here we sought to address this gap by comparing the woody vegetation of the typical cerrado of the Cerrado–Amazonia Transition with that of the core area of the Cerrado in terms of both tree diversity and vegetation biomass. We used 21 one-hectare plots in the transition and 18 in the core to compare key structural parameters (tree height, basal area, and above-ground biomass), and diversity metrics between the regions. We also evaluated the effects of temperature and precipitation on biomass, as well as explored the species diversity versus biomass relationship. We found, for the first time, both that the typical cerrado at the transition holds substantially more biomass than at the core, and that higher temperature and greater precipitation can explain this difference. By contrast, plot-level alpha diversity was almost identical in the two regions. Finally, contrary to some theoretical expectations, we found no positive relationship between species diversity and biomass for the Cerrado woody vegetation. This has implications for the development of effective conservation measures, given that areas with high biomass and importance for the compensation of greenhouse gas emissions are often not those with the greatest diversity
