    Beyond capitalocentricism: are non-capitalist work practices "alternatives"?

    It is widely believed that there is no alternative to capitalism. Over the last two decades however, the critical geography literature on diverse economies has demonstrated the existence of alternatives to capitalism by revealing the persistence of non-capitalist forms of work and organisation. The aim in this paper is to question the validity and usefulness of continuing to frame these non-capitalist practices as "alternatives". Positioning non-capitalist economic practices as “alternatives” fails to capture not only the ubiquity of such practices in everyday life, but also how those engaging do not see them as “alternatives” in the sense of a second choice, or less desirable option, to capitalist practices. The intention in doing so is to reveal that it is not non-capitalist practices that are “alternative” but rather, capitalist practices themselves, thus opening up the future to the possibility of a non-capitalist world more fully than has so far been the case.     Exercise for people with a fragility fracture of the pelvis or lower limb: A systematic review of interventions evaluated in clinical trials and reporting quality

    Background. To aid design of exercise trials for people with pelvic and lower limb fragility fractures a systematic review was conducted to identify what types of exercise and mobility outcomes have been assessed, investigate intervention reporting quality, and evaluate risk of bias in published trials. Methods. Systematic searches of electronic databases (CENTRAL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, PEDro) 1996-2019 were conducted to identify randomised controlled trials of exercise for pelvic or lower limb fragility fractures. Two reviewers independently screened titles and abstracts. One reviewer extracted data, a second verified. Two reviewers independently assessed risk of bias. Intervention reporting quality was based on TIDieR, assessed by one reviewer and verified by a second. Narrative synthesis was undertaken. Registration. PROSPERO CRD42017060905. Results. Searches identified 37 trials including 3564 participants, median sample size 81(IQR 48-124), participants aged 81 years (IQR 79-82) and 76%(2536/3356) female. All trials focussed on people with hip fracture except one on ankle fracture. Exercise types focussed on resistance exercise in 14 trials, weight bearing exercise in 5 trials, 13 varied dose of sessions with health professionals, and 2 trials each focussed on treadmill gait training, timing of weight bearing or aerobic exercise. 30/37(81%) of trials reported adequate sequence generation, 25/37(68%) sufficient allocation concealment. 10/37(27%) trials lacked outcome assessor blinding. Of 65 exercise interventions, reporting was clear for 33(51%) in terms of when started, 61(94%) for where delivered, 49(75%) for who delivered, 47(72%) for group or individual, 29(45%) for duration, 46(71%) for session frequency, 8(12%) for full prescription details to enable the exercises to be reproduced, 32(49%) clearly reported tailoring or modification, and 23(35%) reported exercise adherence. Subjectively assessed mobility was assessed in 22/37(59%) studies and 29/37(78%) used an objective measure. Conclusions. All trials focussed on hip fracture, apart from one ankle fracture trial. Research into pelvic and other lower limb fragility fractures is indicated. A range of exercise types were investigated but to date deficiencies in intervention reporting hamper reproducibility. Adoption of TIDieR and CERT guidelines should improve intervention reporting as use increases. Trials would be improved by consistent blinded outcome assessor use and with consensus on which mobility outcomes should be assessed

    Toward integrated conservation of North America's crop wild relatives

    North America harbors a rich native flora of crop wild relatives—the progenitors and closely related species of domesticated plants—as well as a range of culturally significant wild utilized plants. Despite their current and potential future value, they are rarely prioritized for conservation efforts; thus many species are threatened in their natural habitats, and most are underrepresented in plant genebanks and botanical gardens. Further coordination of efforts among land management, botanical, and agricultural science organizations will improve conservation and general public awareness with regard to these species. We present examples of productive collaborations focused on wild cranberries (Vaccinium macrocarpon and Vaccinium oxycoccos) and chile peppers (Capsicum annuum var. glabriusculum). We then discuss five shared priorities for further action: (1) understand and document North America's crop wild relatives and wild utilized plants, (2) protect threatened species in their natural habitats, (3) collect and conserve ex situ the diversity of prioritized species, (4) make this diversity accessible and attractive for plant breeding, research, and education, and (5) raise public awareness of their value and the threats to their persistence

    Evaluating molecular diagnostic techniques for seed detection of Pseudomonas savastanoi pv. phaseolicola, causal agent of halo blight disease in mungbean (Vigna radiata)

    Halo blight of mungbean (Vigna radiata var. radiata) is caused by the bacterium Pseudomonas savastanoi pv. phaseolicola. This pathogen is transmitted via infected seed, facilitating the spread of the disease into new cultivated areas. Prospective mungbean seed crops are currently subjected to visual inspection as a means of determining disease status, however, this is a poor method that relies on visible symptoms and does not account for latent infections. A range of molecular diagnostics targeting P. savastanoi pv. phaseolicola have been developed, but these have not been deployed on seeds. Quantitative PCR (qPCR) SYBR assay, hydrolysis probe, and conventional PCR, using the same primers were optimised against a plate-truthed dilution series of P. savastanoi pv. phaseolicola. The detection limit of the conventional PCR assay was approximately 9,000 CFU ”l-1, while both qPCR assays could detect 9 CFU ”l-1. These tests were then used to screen DNA extracted from 200 g allotments of 38 seed lots comprising six mungbean cultivars representing the primary Australian production area, and two seed lots of known infection status. Of these, the pathogen was detected in six seed lots by conventional PCR. The SYBR assay and hydrolysis probe methods detected 20 and 24 infected seed lots respectively. This shows that the hydrolysis probe method was the most effective at diagnosing the presence of P. savastanoi pv. phaseolicola in mungbean seed, providing a valuable molecular diagnostic to aid in integrated disease management and seed certification, substantially mitigating losses to halo blight disease

    SIMULTANEOUS OBSERVATIONS OF GIANT PULSES FROM THE CRAB PULSAR, WITH THE MURCHISON WIDEFIELD ARRAY AND PARKES RADIO TELESCOPE: IMPLICATIONS FOR THE GIANT PULSE EMISSION MECHANISM

    We report on observations of giant pulses from the Crab pulsar performed simultaneously with the Parkes radio telescope and the incoherent combination of the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) antenna tiles. The observations were performed over a duration of approximately one hour at a center frequency of 1382 MHz with 340 MHz bandwidth at Parkes, and at a center frequency of 193 MHz with 15 MHz bandwidth at the MWA. Our analysis has led to the detection of 55 giant pulses at the MWA and 2075 at Parkes above a threshold of 3.5σ and 6.5σ, respectively. We detected 51% of the MWA giant pulses at the Parkes radio telescope, with spectral indices in the range of -3.6 > α > -4.9 (S[subscript v] ∝ v[superscript α]). We present a Monte Carlo analysis supporting the conjecture that the giant pulse emission in the Crab is intrinsically broadband, the less than 100% correlation being due to the relative sensitivities of the two instruments and the width of the spectral index distribution. Our observations are consistent with the hypothesis that the spectral index of giant pulses is drawn from normal distribution of standard deviation 0.6, but with a mean that displays an evolution with frequency from −3.00 at 1382 MHz, to −2.85 at 192 MHz
