    Cosmic variance of the local Hubble flow in large-scale cosmological simulations

    The increasing precision in the determination of the Hubble parameter has reached a per cent level at which large-scale cosmic flows induced by inhomogeneities of the matter distribution become non-negligible. Here, we use large-scale cosmological N-body simulations to study statistical properties of the local Hubble parameter as measured by local observers. We show that the distribution of the local Hubble parameter depends not only on the scale of inhomogeneities, but also on how one defines the positions of observers in the cosmic web and what reference frame is used. Observers located in random dark matter haloes measure on average lower expansion rates than those at random positions in space or in the centres of cosmic voids, and this effect is stronger from the halo rest frames compared to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) rest frame. We compare the predictions for the local Hubble parameter with observational constraints based on Type Ia supernova (SNIa) and CMB observations. Due to cosmic variance, for observers located in random haloes we show that the Hubble constant determined from nearby SNIa may differ from that measured from the CMB by ±0.8 per cent at 1σ statistical significance. This scatter is too small to significantly alleviate a recently claimed discrepancy between current measurements assuming a flat Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) model. However, for observers located in the centres of the largest voids permitted by the standard ΛCDM model, we find that Hubble constant measurements from SNIa would be biased high by 5 per cent, rendering this tension non-existent in this extreme case

    One Loop Renormalization of the Littlest Higgs Model

    In Little Higgs models a collective symmetry prevents the Higgs from acquiring a quadratically divergent mass at one loop. This collective symmetry is broken by weakly gauged interactions. Terms, like Yukawa couplings, that display collective symmetry in the bare Lagrangian are generically renormalized into a sum of terms that do not respect the collective symmetry except possibly at one renormalization point where the couplings are related so that the symmetry is restored. We study here the one loop renormalization of a prototypical example, the Littlest Higgs Model.     Case report: Co-occurring obsessive-compulsive disorder and affective psychotic disorder complicated by catatonia in an adolescent female patient

    We present the case of a 16-year-old female patient who experienced the loss of her mother to suicide, leading to post-traumatic stress disorder and prominent mood symptoms. She developed catatonic features during her inpatient psychiatric hospitalization following her own suicide attempt. Over her hospital course, she began to demonstrate signs of co-occurring obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and affective psychotic disorder obfuscated by the severity of her catatonia. After initial workup including neurologic evaluation, laboratory tests, imaging (EEG, MRI), the patient was stabilized on a combination of benzodiazepines, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. The diagnostic challenges of disambiguating multiple concurrent diagnoses in the presence of a syndrome with unclear pathophysiology are discussed. Recommendations are made to thoroughly evaluate thought content during periods of catatonic remission to guide diagnosis and treatment

    Convergence towards a European strategic culture? A constructivist framework for explaining changing norms.

    The article contributes to the debate about the emergence of a European strategic culture to underpin a European Security and Defence Policy. Noting both conceptual and empirical weaknesses in the literature, the article disaggregates the concept of strategic culture and focuses on four types of norms concerning the means and ends for the use of force. The study argues that national strategic cultures are less resistant to change than commonly thought and that they have been subject to three types of learning pressures since 1989: changing threat perceptions, institutional socialization, and mediatized crisis learning. The combined effect of these mechanisms would be a process of convergence with regard to strategic norms prevalent in current EU countries. If the outlined hypotheses can be substantiated by further research the implications for ESDP are positive, especially if the EU acts cautiously in those cases which involve norms that are not yet sufficiently shared across countries

    The Subluminous Supernova 2007qd: A Missing Link in a Family of Low-Luminosity Type Ia Supernovae

    We present multi-band photometry and multi-epoch spectroscopy of the peculiar Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2007qd, discovered by the SDSS-II Supernova Survey. It possesses physical properties intermediate to those of the peculiar SN 2002cx and the extremely low-luminosity SN 2008ha. Optical photometry indicates that it had an extraordinarily fast rise time of <= 10 days and a peak absolute B magnitude of -15.4 +/- 0.2 at most, making it one of the most subluminous SN Ia ever observed. Follow-up spectroscopy of SN 2007qd near maximum brightness unambiguously shows the presence of intermediate-mass elements which are likely caused by carbon/oxygen nuclear burning. Near maximum brightness, SN 2007qd had a photospheric velocity of only 2800 km/s, similar to that of SN 2008ha but about 4000 and 7000 km/s less than that of SN 2002cx and normal SN Ia, respectively. We show that the peak luminosities of SN 2002cx-like objects are highly correlated with both their light-curve stretch and photospheric velocities. Its strong apparent connection to other SN 2002cx-like events suggests that SN 2007qd is also a pure deflagration of a white dwarf, although other mechanisms cannot be ruled out. It may be a critical link between SN 2008ha and the other members of the SN 2002cx-like class of objects.Comment: To be published in the Astrophysical Journal; 37 pages, 13 figures, 4 table

    Metal production in M33: space and time variations

    Nearby galaxies are ideal places to study in detail metallicity gradients and their time evolution. We consider chemical abundances of a new sample of \hii\ regions complemented with previous literature data-sets. We compare \hii\ region and PN abundances obtained with a common set of observations taken at MMT. With an updated theoretical model, we follow the time evolution of the baryonic components and chemical abundances in the disk of M33, assuming that the galaxy is accreting gas from an external reservoir. Supported by a uniform sample of nebular spectroscopic observations, we conclude that: {\em i}) the metallicity distribution in M33 is very complex, showing a central depression in metallicity probably due to observational bias; {\em ii}) the metallicity gradient in the disk of M33 has a slope of -0.037±\pm 0.009 dex kpc1^{-1} in the whole radial range up to \sim8 kpc, and -0.044±\pm 0.009 dex kpc1^{-1} excluding the central kpc; {\em iii}) there is a small evolution of the slope with time from the epoch of PN progenitor formation to the present-time.}Comment: A&A accepted, 15 Pags, 13 Figs, language correctio

    The current status of observational cosmology

    Observational cosmology has indeed made very rapid progress in recent years. The ability to quantify the universe has largely improved due to observational constraints coming from structure formation. The transition to precision cosmology has been spearheaded by measurements of the anisotropy in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) over the past decade. Observations of the large scale structure in the distribution of galaxies, high red-shift supernova, have provided the required complementary information. We review the current status of cosmological parameter estimates from joint analysis of CMB anisotropy and large scale structure (LSS) data.     Critical Role of Gap Junction Coupled K(ATP) Channel Activity for Regulated Insulin Secretion

    Pancreatic β-cells secrete insulin in response to closure of ATP-sensitive K(+) (K(ATP)) channels, which causes membrane depolarization and a concomitant rise in intracellular Ca(2+) (Ca(i)). In intact islets, β-cells are coupled by gap junctions, which are proposed to synchronize electrical activity and Ca(i) oscillations after exposure to stimulatory glucose (>7 mM). To determine the significance of this coupling in regulating insulin secretion, we examined islets and β-cells from transgenic mice that express zero functional K(ATP) channels in approximately 70% of their β-cells, but normal K(ATP) channel density in the remainder. We found that K(ATP) channel activity from approximately 30% of the β-cells is sufficient to maintain strong glucose dependence of metabolism, Ca(i), membrane potential, and insulin secretion from intact islets, but that glucose dependence is lost in isolated transgenic cells. Further, inhibition of gap junctions caused loss of glucose sensitivity specifically in transgenic islets. These data demonstrate a critical role of gap junctional coupling of K(ATP) channel activity in control of membrane potential across the islet. Control via coupling lessens the effects of cell–cell variation and provides resistance to defects in excitability that would otherwise lead to a profound diabetic state, such as occurs in persistent neonatal diabetes mellitus
