Control Room Requirements for Voltage Control in Future Power Systems

In future power grids, a large integration of renewable energy sources is foreseen, which will impose serious technical challenges to system operators. To mitigate some of the problems that renewable energy sources may bring, new voltage and frequency control strategies must be developed. Given the expected evolution of technologies and information systems, these new strategies will benefit from increasing system observability and resources controllability, enabling a more efficient grid operation. The ELECTRA IRP project addressed the new challenges that future power systems will face and developed new grid management and control functionalities to overcome the identified problems. This work, implemented in the framework of ELECTRA, presents an innovative functionality for the control room of the cell operator and its application in assistance with the voltage control designed for the Web-of-Cells. The voltage control method developed uses a proactive mode to calculate the set-points to be sent to the flexible resources, each minute, for a following 15-min period. This way, the voltage control method developed is able to mitigate voltage problems that may occur, while, at the same time, contributes to reduce the energy losses. To enable a straightforward utilization of this functionality, a user interface was created for system operators so they can observe the network state and control resources in a forthright manner accordingly.The work presented in this paper was funded by the ELECTRA IRP project (Seventh Framework Programme FP7 2007/2013) under grant agreement No. 609687

Da literatura como gineceu de imagens às representações de uma Literacia implicada

Parece haver em todos os sistemas educativos uma hierarquia formada para a instrução literária. Neste contexto, as imagens foram subvalorizadas pelos letrados devido ao seu valor comunicativo. Torna-se redutor trabalhar a Literatura, fundadora da Literacia, sem propormos reflectir sobre a importância da imagem percepcionada pela experiência da leitura. Nesta comunicação, a Literatura gemina-se à Literacia de forma sofisticada; ancora-se na compreensão e interpretação das imagens traduzidas pela tradição oral e pela tipografia alfabética em documentos mediatizados, ou não; cristaliza-se de formas várias e enceta o processo de categorização do mundo de forma consciente subscrevendo o que se denomina de literacia crítica. Propomos esclarecer a passagem da Literatura à Literacia, ilustrando os pontos de contacto intrínsecos a ambas. As aptidões de inserção, adaptação e mobilidade nas sociedades actuais mediatizadas pela escrita e fundadas no oculocentrismo parecem determinar o mais ou menos eficaz acesso ao pensamento abstracto. Uma sociedade iletrada adoptaria processos cognitivos menos sofisticados e elaborados para a interpretação do mundo (visível). Assim, a Literatura, gineceu de imagens, promove processos de maturação do leitor e prontifica o exercício descodificador e compreensivo que se constitui no acto de ler e no acto de escrever. Propomos revistar o sentido do leitor em toda a sua polissemia, projectando a Literatura como um espaço de mundividências emersas das suas funções pragmática, social, utilitária e lúdica concretizadas em diferentes dimensões a explorar com a criação de instrumentos de uma didáctica da literatura. Propomos uma reflexão sobre os fundamentos de um cânone escolar e da potencial permeabilidade à construção de um cânone individual, personalizado e intertextual. Assumimos, assim, a Língua, a Literatura e o Leitor como um corpo, continente de conhecimentos, herdeiro de cultura, estruturante de regras, princípios, sujeitos ao acto de interpretar.ESE

Jogo de lógica de Lewis Carroll

Tese de mestrado em Matemática para o Ensino, apresentada à Universidade de Lisboa, através da Faculdade de Ciências, 2008The perspective of the real world by Lewis Carroll shows his great talent, intellectual/perspicacious, in the creation of the Game of Logic, fascinates me. His own world, since his childhood, is shown in Part I. Without any references of Dyslexia, which I think he may have suffered from. His great triumph was to use this gift. He was able to use his mental ability to alter and create different perspectives. People with Dyslexia think mostly through images rather than through words, feeling in multiple dimensions with all their senses. (Therefore, for him Alice in Wonderland was easy). Using Symbolic Logic, Part II, he makes the analogy of understanding his theory as a puzzle. Beginning with definitions and classifications and showing propositions of existence and relations, as well as various investigations into the subject. Symbolic Logic is a set of mental entertainment. It is possible to have healthy satisfaction through playing games, such as Chess and Backgammon, when you win and not have anything to show for it! There is a personal satisfaction, however, it cannot be taken away and used in the real world. However, a perfect mine of health is being left unexplored. Once reached, the connection to Symbolic Logics is like a mental tool, always useful and ready to use to understand different interests in the real world. When playing the Logic Game, described in Part III, you are training your mind. You come to conclusions (or not) after analysing a syllogism. The syllogism is made up of a subject and a predicate which we analyse and rewrite as a trilateral diagram, then try to transform it into a bilateral diagram and reach a conclusion. It is then compared to one given by the syllogism and checks its truthfulness. The most valuable of all are those which can detect deceptions and destroy weak arguments which continue to appear in books, magazine and speeches. In Part IV, there is a comparison between the methods of Euler's Diagrams, Venn's Diagrams and the Lewis Carroll method. Just to demonstrate that his method is easier to understand, more intelligent, objective, efficient and practical.A percepção que Lewis Carroll tem do mundo, através do seu Jogo de Lógica, tão perspicaz, fascinou-me. Este fascínio está ligado também à admiração pelo autor que, desde criança, criou mundos muito seus, como se pode constatar na Parte I. Esta enorme capacidade de alterar e criar percepções, típicas nos disléxicos, está presente em Lewis Carroll de forma exuberante. Pensam recorrendo a imagens, mais do que em palavras, percepcionando em múltiplas dimensões, através dos sentidos (dai a sua facilidade em Alice no país das Maravilhas ). Em Lógica Simbólica, Parte II, propõe a sua teoria como um puzzle. Inicia com definições e classificações. Apresenta proposições de existência e de relação e várias investigações sobre o sujeito. A Lógica Simbólica é um conjunto de recreações mentais. Pode-se ter satisfação, a partir de jogos, como o, Gamão ou Xadrez. Quando se acaba tem-se uma vitória nada para mostrar como resultado! Não tem conclusão que possa ser o seu tesouro, guardar e ter um bom uso real lá fora. Uma vez alcançada a engrenagem da Lógica Simbólica, uma modalidade de Lewis Carroll, é como ter uma ocupação mental lúdica sempre à mão, com uso real. Ao jogar o Jogo de Lógica, descrito na Parte III, estará a treinar-se a mente. Determina-se conclusões (ou não) após a análise de um silogismo. O qual é constituído por um sujeito e um predicado, cuja análise transcrevemos para o diagrama trilateral e tenta-se transferir toda a informação para o diagrama bilateral, obtendo a conclusão. Compara-se esta com a dada no silogismo e averigua-se a veracidade. O mais valioso de tudo é poder detectar enganos, destruir argumentos fracos tão comuns em livros, jornais e discursos. Na Parte IV existe uma comparação entre os métodos dos Diagramas de Euler, Diagramas de Venn, e o Método de Lewis Carroll. A fim de demonstrar este é mais hábil, claro, objectivo, eficiente e prático

Cânone: reminiscências de alunos e de professores

A emergência de um cânone resulta da acção de forças diversas que, no dizer de Harold Bloom, transcendem, hoje em dia, a qualidade literária, único factor que deveria determinar a sua génese. Assim, afigura-se-nos legítimo questionar os argumentos de alguns críticos literários e academias, na defesa da canonização de este ou daquele escritor. A coluna dorsal de um corpo canónico não pode nem deve sucumbir a critérios de sustentação dúbia mas tão só ao primado da qualidade artística das obras literárias. Um cânone será sempre uma selecção que, ao incluir uns, terá de excluir outros. Em um processo desta natureza, persistem as naturais polémicas: porquê este escritor e não outro? Mas ele é necessário, se queremos fazer com que os melhores escritores (ou as melhores obras) sejam lidos. Daqui decorre, inexoravelmente, um outro conceito: o de “clássico”. E deste emerge um outro ponto de reflexão: “Só o clássico reúne as condições de ocupar um lugar no cânone/ensino da literatura”? A proposta que aqui se deixa consiste numa comunicação evocadora destas e outras problemáticas teóricas, com o claro propósito de demonstrar que a definição de um cânone, sendo um processo eternamente submisso a argumentos de inegável subjectividade, não deixa de constituir, na sua essencialidade, um consenso involuntário. Neste sentido, propomos cruzar percepções do leitor aluno e do leitor professor, construtores e representantes da perenidade ou efemeridade de um ou diversos cânones, plasmada em reminiscências partilhadas.ESE

Migrations in contemporary first person documentary: an ethnobiographic analysis of Mare Mater

O presente artigo apresenta os resultados parciais de pesquisa sobre a produção documental contemporânea em primeira pessoa que tematiza experiências familiares de migração. Apresenta, simultaneamente, uma proposta de análise fílmica que tem como base a perspectiva teórico-metodológica etnobiográfica, exemplificando-a por meio da análise de Mare Mater, documentário realizado em 2013 por Patrick Zachmann.This article presents the partial results of research on contemporary first person documentaries that thematizes familiar experiences of migration. Method optimization for the determination of total arsenic and selenium content in fish by ICP-MS preceding to speciation studies.

The present work constitutes the first task of a three year project that aims for the optimization and validation of a methodology to determine the total concentration of Arsenic (As) and Selenium (Se) and its species in fish products by using HPLC-ICP-MS. Prior to initializing speciation studies the method for determination of total arsenic and selenium content was optimized. For that purpose reference materials (DORM-3 and BCR-627) were used as well as spiked samples. Sample preparation using closed vessel microwave digestion was optimized by trying several nitric acid/peroxide hydrogen ratios and varying time and temperature conditions. Results were evaluated by calculating the extraction yield of trace elements from matrix and trueness of reference materials results. Parameters such as repeatability, reproducibility and linearity were evaluated using real samples such as tuna fish and sole. ICP-MS conditions were optimized on a daily basis and calibration solutions were prepared fresh every day. Recovery percentages indicated that digestion conditions are complex and food matrix dependent. The use of the correct internal standards, in this case Yttrium and Rhodium were chosen, as well as its concentration is essential for obtaining accurate results. Also fundamental is matching as much as possible the concentration of nitric acid used in the preparation of calibration solutions to the one from test solutions after microwave digestion. Recovery using commercial calibrants and reference materials was the best parameter to assess the adequacy of the analytical procedure. The obtained results were supported by good laboratory performance in collaborative studies. In future work methods for identifying and quantifying arsenic and selenium species by using HPLC-ICP-MS will be developed.This work was completed on behalf of Project GOODFISH PTDC/SAU-ESA/103825/200

The influence of in vitro gastrointestinal digestion on the chemical composition and antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory capacities of carob liqueurs obtained with different elaboration techniques

Carob liqueur is a traditional Mediterranean alcoholic beverage obtained via a wide range of production techniques contributing to the different organoleptic attributes of the final product. The aim of this research was to evaluate the stability of the chemical composition and biological capacities (antioxidant and enzyme inhibition) under in vitro simulated gastrointestinal digestion of liqueurs prepared by flavouring the fig spirit with carob pulp by maceration, distillation, percolation, or aqueous and hydro-alcoholic infusions. For this purpose, the phenolic and furanic compositions, the total phenolic (TPC) and flavonoid (TFC) contents, antioxidant capacity (AC), and enzyme inhibitory potential against acethylcholinesterase, tyrosinase, α-glucosidase and α-amylase enzymes were evaluated. The content of gallic acid decreased after gastrointestinal digestion, while TPC, TFC, and AC significantly increased after each digestion phase. Overall, no significantly different enzyme inhibitions (p < 0.05) were observed among digested liqueurs, with moderate inhibition against acethylcholinesterase and tyrosinase (enzymes related with neurodegenerative diseases), and potent and low inhibitory capacities for α-glucosidase and α-amylase, respectively (ideal conditions employed in antidiabetic therapy).
