Perturbation of the Classic Binary Adduct C6H6:C6F6 by Chlorine Substitution
This paper presents a comprehensive exploration of the impact of
monochlorine substitution on the solid-state phases of the classic binary adduct
C6H6:C6F6. Crystal structures for all four phases of C6H6:C6F5Cl were determined
using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, with complementary data from differential
scanning calorimetry (DSC) and variable-temperature powder X-ray diffraction
(VT-PXRD). The study reveals that phases I and III would have been overlooked
without the additional information provided by DSC and PXRD. Symmetry changes
during the phase transitions, including the loss of 3-fold and mirror symmetry, are
crucial for our understanding of the observed transformations. Comparisons with
the prototype C6H6:C6F6, the methyl-substituted C6H5CH3:C6F6 and iodine-substituted analogue C6H6:(C6F5I)2 provide useful
insights into the noncovalent interactions holding these cocrystals together. The experimental results herein may be useful for
informing crystal structure prediction, especially in distinguishing between structures of similar energy
Revisiting the need for a literature search narrative: A brief methodological note

Vitamin D intake and risk of CVD and all-cause mortality: evidence from the Caerphilly Prospective Cohort Study
OBJECTIVE:
Prospective data on the associations between vitamin D intake and risk of CVD and all-cause mortality are limited and inconclusive. The aim of the present study was to investigate the associations between vitamin D intake and CVD risk and all-cause mortality in the Caerphilly Prospective Cohort Study.
DESIGN:
The associations of vitamin D intake with CVD risk markers were examined cross-sectionally at baseline and longitudinally at 5-year, 10-year and >20-year follow-ups. In addition, the predictive value of vitamin D intake for CVD events and all-cause mortality after >20 years of follow-up was examined. Logistic regression and general linear regression were used for data analysis.
SETTING:
Participants in the UK.
SUBJECTS:
Men (n 452) who were free from CVD and type 2 diabetes at recruitment.
RESULTS:
Higher vitamin D intake was associated with increased HDL cholesterol (P=0·003) and pulse pressure (P=0·04) and decreased total cholesterol:HDL cholesterol (P=0·008) cross-sectionally at baseline, but the associations were lost during follow-up. Furthermore, higher vitamin D intake was associated with decreased concentration of plasma TAG at baseline (P=0·01) and at the 5-year (P=0·01), but not the 10-year examination. After >20 years of follow-up, vitamin D was not associated with stroke (n 72), myocardial infarctions (n 142), heart failure (n 43) or all-cause mortality (n 281), but was positively associated with increased diastolic blood pressure (P=0·03).
CONCLUSIONS:
The study supports associations of higher vitamin D intake with lower fasting plasma TAG and higher diastolic blood pressure
Further Definition of the Mass-Metallicity Relation in Globular Cluster Systems Around Brightest Cluster Galaxies
We combine the globular cluster data for fifteen Brightest Cluster Galaxies
and use this material to trace the mass-metallicity relations (MMR) in their
globular cluster systems (GCSs). This work extends previous studies which
correlate the properties of the MMR with those of the host galaxy. Our combined
data sets show a mean trend for the metal-poor (MP) subpopulation which
corresponds to a scaling of heavy-element abundance with cluster mass Z ~
M^(0.30+/-0.05). No trend is seen for the metal-rich (MR) subpopulation which
has a scaling relation that is consistent with zero. We also find that the
scaling exponent is independent of the GCS specific frequency and host galaxy
luminosity, except perhaps for dwarf galaxies.
We present new photometry in (g',i') obtained with Gemini/GMOS for the
globular cluster populations around the southern giant ellipticals NGC 5193 and
IC 4329. Both galaxies have rich cluster populations which show up as normal,
bimodal sequences in the colour-magnitude diagram.
We test the observed MMRs and argue that they are statistically real, and not
an artifact caused by the method we used. We also argue against asymmetric
contamination causing the observed MMR as our mean results are no different
from other contamination-free studies. Finally, we compare our method to the
standard bimodal fitting method (KMM or RMIX) and find our results are
consistent.
Interpretation of these results is consistent with recent models for globular
cluster formation in which the MMR is determined by GC self-enrichment during

Effects of short-term treatment with atorvastatin in smokers with asthma - a randomized controlled trial
<b>Background</b> The immune modulating properties of statins may benefit smokers with asthma. We tested the hypothesis that short-term treatment with atorvastatin improves lung function or indices of asthma control in smokers with asthma.<p></p>
<b>Methods</b> Seventy one smokers with mild to moderate asthma were recruited to a randomized double-blind parallel group trial comparing treatment with atorvastatin (40 mg per day) versus placebo for 4 weeks. After 4 weeks treatment inhaled beclometasone (400 ug per day) was added to both treatment arms for a further 4 weeks. The primary outcome was morning peak expiratory flow after 4 weeks treatment. Secondary outcome measures included indices of asthma control and airway inflammation.<p></p>
<b>Results</b> At 4 weeks, there was no improvement in the atorvastatin group compared to the placebo group in morning peak expiratory flow [-10.67 L/min, 95% CI -38.70 to 17.37, p=0.449], but there was an improvement with atorvastatin in asthma quality of life score [0.52, 95% CI 0.17 to 0.87 p=0.005]. There was no significant improvement with atorvastatin and inhaled beclometasone compared to inhaled beclometasone alone in outcome measures at 8 weeks.<p></p>
<b>Conclusions</b> Short-term treatment with atorvastatin does not alter lung function but may improve asthma quality of life in smokers with mild to moderate asthma. Clinicaltrials.gov identifier: NCT0046382
Globular Cluster Systems in Brightest Cluster Galaxies: A Near-Universal Luminosity Function?
We present the first results from our HST Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG)
survey of seven central supergiant cluster galaxies and their globular cluster
(GC) systems. We measure a total of 48000 GCs in all seven galaxies,
representing the largest single GC database. We find that a log-normal shape
accurately matches the observed luminosity function (LF) of the GCs down to the
GCLF turnover point, which is near our photometric limit. In addition, the LF
has a virtually identical shape in all seven galaxies. Our data underscore the
similarity in the formation mechanism of massive star clusters in diverse
galactic environments. At the highest luminosities (log L > 10^7 L_Sun) we find
small numbers of "superluminous" objects in five of the galaxies; their
luminosity and color ranges are at least partly consistent with those of UCDs
(Ultra-Compact Dwarfs). Lastly, we find preliminary evidence that in the outer
halo (R > 20 kpc), the LF turnover point shows a weak dependence on projected
distance, scaling as L_0 ~ R^-0.2, while the LF dispersion remains nearly

The M33 Globular Cluster System with PAndAS Data: The Last Outer Halo Cluster?
We use CFHT/MegaCam data to search for outer halo star clusters in M33 as
part of the Pan-Andromeda Archaeological Survey (PAndAS). This work extends
previous studies out to a projected radius of 50 kpc and covers over 40 square
degrees. We find only one new unambiguous star cluster in addition to the five
previously known in the M33 outer halo (10 kpc <= r <= 50 kpc). Although we
identify 2440 cluster candidates of various degrees of confidence from our
objective image search procedure, almost all of these are likely background
contaminants, mostly faint unresolved galaxies. We measure the luminosity,
color and structural parameters of the new cluster in addition to the five
previously-known outer halo clusters. At a projected radius of 22 kpc, the new
cluster is slightly smaller, fainter and redder than all but one of the other
outer halo clusters, and has g' ~ 19.9, (g'-i') ~ 0.6, concentration parameter
c ~ 1.0, a core radius r_c ~ 3.5 pc, and a half-light radius r_h ~ 5.5 pc. For
M33 to have so few outer halo clusters compared to M31 suggests either tidal
stripping of M33's outer halo clusters by M31, or a very different, much calmer

The impact of automated eGFR reporting and education on nephrology service referrals
Background. Serum creatinine concentration is an unreliable and insensitive marker of chronic kidney disease (CKD). To improve CKD detection, the Australasian Creatinine Consensus Working Committee recommended reporting of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) using the four-variable Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) formula with every request for serum creatinine concentration. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of automated laboratory reporting of eGFR on the quantity and quality of referrals to nephrology services in Southeast Queensland, Australia
Animals, veterinarians and the sociology of diagnosis
While sociologists of medicine have focused their efforts on understanding human health, illness, and medicine, veterinary medical practice has not yet caught their attention in any sustained way. In this critical review paper, we use insights from the sociology of diagnosis literature to explore veterinary practice, and aim to demonstrate the importance of animals to sociological understandings of health, illness and disease. As in human medicine, our analysis shows the importance of diagnosis in creating and maintaining the power and authority of the veterinary professional. However, we then explore how diagnosis operates as a kind of dance, where professional authority can be challenged, particularly in light of the complex ethical responsibilities and clinical interactions that result from the triad of professional/owner/animal patient. Finally, we consider diagnosis via the precept of entanglement, and raise the intriguing possibility of interspecies health relations, whereby decision-making in human healthcare may be influenced by experiences in animal healthcare, and vice-versa. In our conclusion we argue that this analysis provides opportunities to scholars researching diagnosis in human healthcare, particularly around the impact of commercial drivers; has implications for veterinary and public health practitioners; and should help animate the emerging sociology of veterinary medicine
