Searching High Redshift Large-Scale Structures: Photometry of Four Fields Around Quasar Pairs at z~1
We have studied the photometric properties of four fields around the
high-redshift quasar pairs QP1310+0007, QP1355-0032, QP0110-0219, and
QP0114-3140 at z ~ 1 with the aim of identifying large-scale structures- galaxy
clusters or groups- around them. This sample was observed with GMOS in Gemini
North and South telescopes in the g', r', i', and z' bands, and our photometry
is complete to a limiting magnitude of i' ~ 24 mag (corresponding to ~ M*_i' +
2 at the redshift of the pairs). Our analysis reveals that QP0110-0219 shows
very strong and QP1310+0007 and QP1355-0032 show some evidence for the presence
of rich galaxy clusters in direct vicinity of the pairs. On the other hand,
QP0114-3140 could be an isolated pair in a poor environment. This work suggest
that z ~ 1 quasar pairs are excellent tracers of high density environments and

A structure in the early Universe at z 1.3 that exceeds the homogeneity scale of the R-W concordance cosmology
A Large Quasar Group (LQG) of particularly large size and high membership has been identified in the DR7QSO catalogue of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. It has characteristic size (volume^1/3) ~ 500 Mpc (proper size, present epoch), longest dimension ~ 1240 Mpc, membership of 73 quasars, and mean redshift = 1.27. In terms of both size and membership it is the most extreme LQG found in the DR7QSO catalogue for the redshift range 1.0 = 1.28, which is itself one of the more extreme examples. Their boundaries approach to within ~ 2 deg (~ 140 Mpc projected). This new, huge LQG appears to be the largest structure currently known in the early universe. Its size suggests incompatibility with the Yadav et al. scale of homogeneity for the concordance cosmology, and thus challenges the assumption of the cosmological principle
The properties of highly luminous IRAS galaxies
From a complete sample of 154 galaxies identified with IRAS sources in a 304 sq deg area centered on the South Galactic Pole, a subsample of 58 galaxies with L sub IR/L sub B > 3 was chosen. Low resolution spectra were obtained for 30% of the subsample and redshifts and relative emission line intensities were derived. As a class these galaxies are very luminous with = 2.9 x 10 to the 11th power L sub 0 and (L sub IR) max = 1.3 x 10 to the 12th power L sub 0. CCD images and JHK photometry were obtained for many of the subsample. The galaxies are for the most part newly identified and are optically faint, with a majority showing evidence of a recent interaction. Radio continuum observations of all galaxies of the subsample were recently obtained at 20 cm VLA with about 75% being detected in a typical integration time of about 10 minutes
Systematic identification of IRAS point sources
A large scale program was initiated to identify IRAS point sources. At ROE the ideal facilities are at hand to undertake such a large program, viz. the rapid scanning capabilities of the COSMOS measuring machine to exploit the depth and resolution of the U.K. Schmidt Telescope J survey plates. Sources in 44 Schmidt plate areas were identified including 1300 sources and covering 1100 square degrees. The identification comprise 700 galaxy identifications and 600 stellar identifications. There are also about 40 sources with no obvious identification but which can be most easily explained by cirrus, confusion between two sources or sources just outside the 2 sigma error box. A major aim with the galaxy identification is to provide a data base from which sound statistical analyses can be made. Accurate blue magnitudes and morphological classifications for each identification were produced
A Search for OH Megamasers at z > 0.1. III. The Complete Survey
We present the final results from the Arecibo Observatory OH megamaser
survey. We discuss in detail the properties of the remaining 18 OH megamasers
detected in the survey, including 3 redetections. We place upper limits on the
OH emission from 85 nondetections and examine the properties of 25 ambiguous
cases for which the presence or absence of OH emission could not be determined.
The complete survey has discovered 50 new OH megamasers (OHMs) in
(ultra)luminous infrared galaxies ([U]LIRGs) which doubles the sample of known
OHMs and increases the sample at z>0.1 sevenfold. The Arecibo OH megamaser
survey indicates that the OHM fraction in LIRGs is an increasing function of
the far-IR luminosity (L_{FIR}) and far-IR color, reaching a fraction of
roughly one third in the warmest ULIRGs. Significant relationships between OHMs
and their hosts are few, primarily due to a mismatch in size scales of measured
properties and an intrinsic scatter in OHM properties roughly equal to the span
of the dataset. We investigate relationships between OHMs and their hosts with
a variety of statistical tools including survival analysis, partial correlation
coefficients, and a principal component analysis. There is no apparent OH
megamaser ``fundamental plane.'' We compile data on all previously known OHMs
and evaluate the possible mechanisms and relationships responsible for OHM
production in merging systems. The OH-FIR relationship is reexamined using the
doubled OHM sample and found to be significantly flatter than previously
thought: L_{OH} ~ L_{FIR}^{1.2 +/- 0.1}. This near-linear dependence suggests a
mixture of saturated and unsaturated masers, either within individual galaxies

The limits of discourse: masculinity as vulnerability
For many, gender equity being fair to women and men is a zero sum game in which men should be willing to
give up their privileges for the creation of a more equitable and just society. The idea that men might benefit
from gender equity seems, for many, unthinkable. This was brought home a few years ago in a gender studies
test, when students answering a question on what men might gain from gender equality explained instead how
women would benefit. In this Perspective I reflect on the ways in which popular discourses around gender may
inadvertently undermine movement towards gender and social justice. Dismissing my students' answers as the
result of poor teaching or learning misses a key point: It seems to be extraordinarily difficult for most people to
recognise how gender creates masculine vulnerabilities or how gender equity could benefit men. I suggest that if
we are to improve women's lives through the reduction of violence, feminist teachers and activists need to think
creatively about how to help men and boys understand that performances of masculinity deeply compromise
their own lives
A Renormalization Group Approach to Relativistic Cosmology
We discuss the averaging hypothesis tacitly assumed in standard cosmology.
Our approach is implemented in a "3+1" formalism and invokes the coarse
graining arguments, provided and supported by the real-space Renormalization
Group (RG) methods. Block variables are introduced and the recursion relations
written down explicitly enabling us to characterize the corresponding RG flow.
To leading order, the RG flow is provided by the Ricci-Hamilton equations
studied in connection with the geometry of three-manifolds. The properties of
the Ricci-Hamilton flow make it possible to study a critical behaviour of
cosmological models. This criticality is discussed and it is argued that it may
be related to the formation of sheet-like structures in the universe. We
provide an explicit expression for the renormalized Hubble constant and for the
scale dependence of the matter distribution. It is shown that the Hubble
constant is affected by non-trivial scale dependent shear terms, while the
spatial anisotropy of the metric influences significantly the scale-dependence

Hookworm Infection and Environmental Factors in Mbeya Region, Tanzania: A Cross-sectional, Population-based study.
Hookworm disease is one of the most common infections and cause of a high disease burden in the tropics and subtropics. Remotely sensed ecological data and model-based geostatistics have been used recently to identify areas in need for hookworm control. Cross-sectional interview data and stool samples from 6,375 participants from nine different sites in Mbeya region, south-western Tanzania, were collected as part of a cohort study. Hookworm infection was assessed by microscopy of duplicate Kato-Katz thick smears from one stool sample from each participant. A geographic information system was used to obtain remotely sensed environmental data such as land surface temperature (LST), vegetation cover, rainfall, and elevation, and combine them with hookworm infection data and with socio-demographic and behavioral data. Uni- and multivariable logistic regression was performed on sites separately and on the pooled dataset. Univariable analyses yielded significant associations for all ecological variables. Five ecological variables stayed significant in the final multivariable model: population density (odds ratio (OR)â=â0.68; 95% confidence interval (CI)â=â0.63-0.73), mean annual vegetation density (ORâ=â0.11; 95% CIâ=â0.06-0.18), mean annual LST during the day (ORâ=â0.81; 95% CIâ=â0.75-0.88), mean annual LST during the night (ORâ=â1.54; 95% CIâ=â1.44-1.64), and latrine coverage in household surroundings (ORâ=â1.02; 95% CIâ=â1.01-1.04). Interaction terms revealed substantial differences in associations of hookworm infection with population density, mean annual enhanced vegetation index, and latrine coverage between the two sites with the highest prevalence of infection. This study supports previous findings that remotely sensed data such as vegetation indices, LST, and elevation are strongly associated with hookworm prevalence. However, the results indicate that the influence of environmental conditions can differ substantially within a relatively small geographic area. The use of large-scale associations as a predictive tool on smaller scales is therefore problematic and should be handled with care
Diagnostic accuracy of alternative biomarkers for acute aortic syndrome: a systematic review
Background: D-dimer is the only biomarker currently recommended in guidelines for the diagnosis of acute aortic syndrome (AAS). We undertook a systematic review to determine whether any alternative biomarkers could be useful in AAS diagnosis.
Methods: We searched electronic databases (including MEDLINE, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library) from inception to February 2024. Diagnostic studies were eligible if they examined biomarkers other than D-dimer for diagnosing AAS compared with a reference standard test in people presenting to the ED with symptoms of AAS. Case-control studies were identified but excluded due to high risk of bias. Selection of studies, data extraction and risk of bias assessments using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies 2 (QUADAS-2) tool were undertaken independently by at least two reviewers. We used narrative synthesis to summarise the findings.
Results: We identified 2017 citations, included 13 cohort studies (n=76â999), and excluded 38 case-control studies. Methodological quality was variable, with most included studies having unclear or high risk of bias and applicability concerns in at least one item of the QUADASâ2 tool. Only two studies reported biomarkers with sensitivity and specificity comparable to D-dimer (ie, >90%âand >50%, respectively). Wang et al reported 99.1% sensitivity and 84.9% specificity for soluble ST2; however, these findings conflicted with estimates of 58% sensitivity and 70.8% specificity reported in another study. Chun and Siu reported 95.6% sensitivity and 56.1% specificity for neutrophil count, but this has not been confirmed elsewhere.
Conclusion: There are many potential alternative biomarkers for AAS but few have been evaluated in more than one study, study designs are often weak and reported biomarker accuracy is modest or inconsistent between studies. Alternative biomarkers to D-dimer are not ready for routine clinical use.
