Eta-meson production in the resonance energy region

We perform an updated coupled-channel analysis of eta-meson production including all recent photoproduction data on the proton. The dip observed in the differential cross sections at c.m. energies W=1.68 GeV is explained by destructive interference between the S11(1535)S_{11}(1535) and S11(1560)S_{11}(1560) states. The effect from P11(1710)P_{11}(1710) is found to be small but still important to reproduce the correct shape of the differential cross section. For the πNηN\pi^- N \to \eta N scattering we suggest a reaction mechanism in terms of the S11(1535)S_{11}(1535), S11(1560)S_{11}(1560), and P11(1710)P_{11}(1710) states. Our conclusion on the importance of the S11(1535)S_{11}(1535), S11(1560)S_{11}(1560), and P11(1710)P_{11}(1710) resonances in the eta-production reactions is in line with our previous results. No strong indication for a narrow state with a width of 15 MeV and the mass of 1680 MeV is found in the analysis. ηN\eta N scattering length is extracted and discussed.Comment: replaced with a published version, pole parameters and scattering lengths are adde

Within a chiral constituent quark model approach, η\eta-meson production on the proton {\it via} electromagnetic and hadron probes are studied. With few parameters, differential cross-section and polarized beam asymmetry for \gamma p \to \eta panddifferentialcrosssectionfor and differential cross section for \pi^- p\to \eta nprocessesarecalculatedandsuccessfullycomparedwiththedatainthecenterofmassenergyrangefromthresholdupto2GeV.Thefiveknownresonances processes are calculated and successfully compared with the data in the center-of-mass energy range from threshold up to 2 GeV. The five known resonances S_{11}(1535),, S_{11}(1650),, P_{13}(1720),, D_{13}(1520),and, and F_{15}(1680)arefoundtobedominantinthereactionmechanismsinbothchannels.Possiblerolesplaiedbynewresonancesarealsoinvestigatedandinthephotoproductionchannel,significantcontributionfrom are found to be dominant in the reaction mechanisms in both channels. Possible roles plaied by new resonances are also investigated and in the photoproduction channel, significant contribution from S_{11}and- and D_{15}resonances,withmassesaround1715MeVand2090MeV,respectively,arededuced.Forthesocalledmissingresonances,noevidenceisfoundwithintheinvestigatedreactions.Thehelicityamplitudesanddecaywidthsof-resonances, with masses around 1715 MeV and 2090 MeV, respectively, are deduced. For the so-called missing resonances, no evidence is found within the investigated reactions. The helicity amplitudes and decay widths of N^* \to \pi N, \eta N$ are also presented, and found consistent with the PDG values.Comment: 23 pages,5 figure

η\eta production off the proton in a Regge-plus-chiral quark approach

A chiral constituent quark model approach, embodying s- and u-channel exchanges, complemented with a Reggeized treatment for t-channel is presented. A model is obtained allowing data for πpηn\pi^- p \to \eta n and γpηp\gamma p \to \eta p to be describe satisfactorily. For the latter reaction, recently released data by CLAS and CBELSA/TAPS Collaborations in the system total energy range 1.6W2.81.6 \lesssim W \lesssim 2.8 GeV are well reproduced due to the inclusion of Reggeized trajectories instead of simple ρ\rho and ω\omega poles. Contribution from "missing" resonances is found to be negligible in the considered processes.Comment: 23 pages.4 figures,4 tables, to appear in Phys.Rev.

Study of \pi^{-}p \to \eta n at low energies in a chiral constituent quark model

A chiral quark model approach is extended to the study of the πN\pi N scattering at low energies. The process of πpηn\pi^{-}p \to \eta n near threshold is investigated. The model is successful in describing the differential cross sections and total cross section near the η\eta production threshold. The roles of the resonances in n2n\leq 2 shells are clarified. Near threshold, the S11(1535)S_{11}(1535) dominates the reactions, while the interferences from the S11(1650)S_{11}(1650) turn out to be destructive around W1.6W\lesssim 1.6 GeV. The D13(1520)D_{13}(1520) is crucial to give correct shapes of the differential cross sections. The nucleon pole term contributions are significant. The P11(1710)P_{11}(1710) plays an important role around the c.m. energy W=1.7W=1.7 GeV, it is crucial to produce an enhancement in the region of W>1.6W>1.6 GeV as suggested by the data for total cross section. The tt-channel is negligible in the reactions.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures. Version accepted by PRC. Some changes in the t-channel due to an error in the cod

    Baryon Resonance Analysis from SAID

We discuss the analysis of data from piN elastic scattering and single pion photo- and electroproduction. The main focus is a study of low-lying non-strange baryon resonances. Here we concentrate on some difficulties associated with resonance identification, in particular the Roper and higher P11 states.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures; Nstar2009 Conf Proceedings; small revisio

    Coupled-channels study of the πpηn\pi^{-}p \to \eta n process

The reaction πpηn\pi^{-}p \to \eta n is investigated within a dynamical coupled-channels model of meson production reactions in the nucleon resonance region. The meson baryon channels included are πN\pi N, ηN\eta N, πΔ\pi \Delta, σN\sigma N, and ρN\rho N. The non-resonant meson-baryon interactions of the model are derived from a set of Lagrangians by using a unitary transformation method. One or two excited nucleon states in each of SS, PP, DD, and FF partial waves are included to generate the resonant amplitudes. Data of πpηn\pi^{-}p \to \eta n reaction from threshold up to a total center-of-mass energy of about 2 GeV are satisfactorily reproduced and the roles played by the following nine nucleon resonances are investigated: S11(1535)S_{11}(1535), S11(1650)S_{11}(1650), P11(1440)P_{11}(1440), P11(1710)P_{11}(1710), P13(1720)P_{13}(1720), D13(1520)D_{13}(1520), D13(1700)D_{13}(1700), D15(1675)D_{15}(1675), and F15(1680)F_{15}(1680). The reaction mechanism as well as the predicted ηN\eta N scattering length are discussed.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figure

The energies and residues of the nucleon resonances N(1535) and N(1650)

We extract pole positions for the N(1535) and N(1650) resonances using two different models. The positions are determined from fits to different subsets of the existing πNπN\pi N\to\pi N, πNηN\pi N\to\eta N and γpηp\gamma p\to\eta p data and found to be 1515(10)--i85(15)MeV and 1660(10)--i65(10)MeV, when the data is described in terms of two poles. Sensitivity to the choice of fitted data is explored. The corresponding ππ\pi \pi and ηη\eta \eta residues of these poles are also extracted.Comment: 9 page

Investigation of the nucleon-nucleon tensor force in the three-nucleon system

Proton-deuteron elastic scattering has been investigated at Ep =22.7 MeV by comparison of rigorous Faddeev calculations with experimental results. The observable most sensitive to the tensor force is the nucleon-nucleon polarization transfer coefficient Kyy'. The new angular distribution of Kyy' clearly favours the tensor force of the Bonn A potential, which is weaker than the one of the Paris potential.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/28425/1/0000208.pd

Measurement of Inverse Pion Photoproduction at Energies Spanning the N(1440) Resonance

Differential cross sections for the process pi^- p -> gamma n have been measured at Brookhaven National Laboratory's Alternating Gradient Synchrotron with the Crystal Ball multiphoton spectrometer. Measurements were made at 18 pion momenta from 238 to 748 MeV/c, corresponding to E_gamma for the inverse reaction from 285 to 769 MeV. The data have been used to evaluate the gamma n multipoles in the vicinity of the N(1440) resonance. We compare our data and multipoles to previous determinations. A new three-parameter SAID fit yields 36 +/- 7 (GeV)^-1/2 X 10^-3 for the A^n_1/2 amplitude of the P_11.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, submitted to PR
