Mediterranean diet, endothelial function and vascular inflammatory markers.

AbstractObjectivesTo discuss present knowledge about the relation between adipose tissue, inflammation and the Mediterranean-style diet.DesignReview of the literature and personal perspectives.Setting and resultsRecent studies indicate that adipose tissue is an endocrine organ producing numerous proteins, collectively referred to as adipokines, with broad biological activity, which play an important autocrine role in obesity-associated complications. Adipose tissue in general and visceral fat in particular are thought to be key regulators of inflammation which is heavily involved in the onset and development of atherothrombotic disease. Moreover, chronic inflammation may also represent a triggering factor in the origin of the metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus. An increased release of proinflammatory adipokines from the visceral adipose tissue, associated with a reduced secretion of anti-inflammatory adipokines and cytokines, could determine a low-grade chronic inflammatory state which might play a role in the future development of the metabolic syndrome, diabetes and atherosclerosis through both insulin resistance and endothelial dysfunction. Interventions aimed at decreasing weight loss and improving adherence to a Mediterranean-style diet in people with obesity or metabolic syndrome decrease the inflammatory milieu and ameliorate both insulin resistance and endothelial dysfunction.ConclusionsAppropriate dietary patterns, as those associated with the eating model of Mediterranean-type diets, represent therapeutic strategies to reduce inflammation and the associated metabolic and cardiovascular risk

Band-wise Hyperspectral Image Pansharpening using CNN Model Propagation

Hyperspectral pansharpening is receiving a growing interest since the last few years as testified by a large number of research papers and challenges. It consists in a pixel-level fusion between a lower-resolution hyperspectral datacube and a higher-resolution single-band image, the panchromatic image, with the goal of providing a hyperspectral datacube at panchromatic resolution. Thanks to their powerful representational capabilities, deep learning models have succeeded to provide unprecedented results on many general purpose image processing tasks. However, when moving to domain specific problems, as in this case, the advantages with respect to traditional model-based approaches are much lesser clear-cut due to several contextual reasons. Scarcity of training data, lack of ground-truth, data shape variability, are some such factors that limit the generalization capacity of the state-of-the-art deep learning networks for hyperspectral pansharpening. To cope with these limitations, in this work we propose a new deep learning method which inherits a simple single-band unsupervised pansharpening model nested in a sequential band-wise adaptive scheme, where each band is pansharpened refining the model tuned on the preceding one. By doing so, a simple model is propagated along the wavelength dimension, adaptively and flexibly, with no need to have a fixed number of spectral bands, and, with no need to dispose of large, expensive and labeled training datasets. The proposed method achieves very good results on our datasets, outperforming both traditional and deep learning reference methods. An improved characterization of horse (Equus caballus, 2n=64) chromosomes by using replicating G and R banding patterns

Abstract Peripheral blood lymphocytes were cultured and treated for early- and late-BrdU incorporation to perform replicating G- and R-banding patterns, respectively. Slides were treated for GBG-, RBA- and RBG-banding techniques. Improved banded karyotypes at early- (350 bands) and pro-metaphase (500 bands) stage were performed and GBG- and RBA-banded prometaphase karyotypes were presented for the first time on this species. All chromosomes, including the small acrocentrics, show clear and distinguishable G- and R-banding patterns. Chromosome identification followed the latest chromosome standard nomenclature (ISCNH 1997). This study is also our contribution to further standard karyotype attempts at the prometaphase stage

Native cattle breeds of Southern Italy: karyological profile

    Get PDF
Italian typical products of animal origin are strictly linked to native breeds. Their protection requires control of their reproductive and productive abilities. Hence the need for karyological studies to identify subjects with chromosome abnormalities linked to hypofertility or sterility. We report the results of karyological analyses carried out from January 2008 to December 2008 on 145 cattle of native breeds (Agerolese, Cinisara, Modicana and Podolica) reared in Southern Italy so as to evaluate and characterize the presence of chromosome abnormalities in subjects with normal phenotypes. Besides the 128 karyologically normal subjects (2n=60, XY and 2n=60, XX), 17 were carriers of rob (1;29) and one male was a carrier of cellular chimerism 2n=60, XX/XY. According to our data there is a high frequency of rob (1;29) in Cinisara and Podolica breeds while in Agerolese there was only one case of rob (1;29) and none in Modicana
