SCUdent Books: A University-Focused Bookselling Platform

    Get PDF
As the beginning of each university semester or quarter commences, so does the rush to acquire books for classes. The search for school books is a busy and important task for many students. However, an entire slew of problems and frustrations emerge with this academic race to gather books. To begin, students have to deal with the traditional frustrations of expensive textbooks sold at the university bookstore which is especially troublesome for those on a tight budget. Additionally, required textbooks for classes may not be available at the bookstore or require restocking which can take an unknown amount of time. Because of this, students turn to cheaper, faster, and more efficient alternatives for acquiring school books including online retailers such as Amazon or Barnes and Noble. While the Internet makes book shopping appear easier, there exist issues that come with it. Students have to put in more effort ordering online, pay for extra shipping, and wait for their books to arrive. Also, online shopping for books is incredibly decentralized with no convenient platform to cater to students\u27 needs. Students must first spend time finding out which books are required for each class and then spend even more time comparing prices from multiple online retailers. In addition, once a student completes a class he or she may no longer need the book. As a result, the student has no convenient method of disposing the book and must now sell it, throw it away, or keep it. Overall, the process of acquiring books in university is disorganized, stressful, and inconvenient for students

A chemical abundance analysis of P-rich star candidates

In this memory will be analysed the work done on the spectra of 39 stars to determine if they can be included in the group of the P-rich stars, stars whose abundance of phosphorus is higher than average. These stars are very important in order to explain the origin of the phosphorus found in our galaxy, currently underpredicted by chemical evolution models. On the other hand, last year were released an article that, analysing data from the APOGEE survey, presents the discovery of the existence of stars with an abundance of P higher than normal, called P-rich [1]. In a second work, were shown 39 stars with anomalies in their composition.[2] This project had as objective to determine if these 39 stars were P-rich and if they presented a correlation between P and other elements (O,Mg, Al,Si and Ce). To do this we used the data, provided by the APOGEE database, of the stars studied (H-band spectra, effective temperature, surface gravity and abundance of carbon, nitrogen and alpha elements, among others) as initial data of the spectral synthesis code BACCHUS, which provided the abundance of phosphorus and cerium of these stars. We found that 37 stars (∼90%) are very rich in P ([P/Fe]>=1 dex) and rich in Ce ([Ce/Fe]>0 dex). Then, we compared the P and Ce abundances with those from other elements as well as with those observed in other stars with similar atmospheric parameters. We found that there is indeed the possibility of a correlation between phosphorous and oxyge, as well between O and Si and between Al and Mg.En esta memoria se analizar´a el trabajo realizado sobre los espectros de 39 estrellas para determinar si pueden incluirse en el grupo de estrellas P-rich, estrellas cuya abundancia de f´osforo es superior a la media.

Cultural tourism development and the impact on local communities: a case study from the South of Italy

Cultural tourism is the idea that a place’s cultural perception has enough value to make it a destination for travel. Communities characterized by a high level of cultural development are usually associated with a high level of satisfaction about living conditions and wealth. In this research, we postulate that the creation and development of the cultural attractions of a place to attract tourists also have a positive impact on the life condition of the local community, not only for increased money availability but also for a change of inhabitants’ mind-set. Case study methodology has been used to support the hypotheses

    Get PDF
Purpose: Staphylococcus aureus bacteriemia (SAB) as critical condition for the life and occasionally involves the eyes. The aim of this report is to describe the ocular involvement with multimodal imaging. Observations: A patient admitted for evaluation of acute onset of confusion, disorientation, and generalized malaise and found to have methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)-associated endocarditis and multifocal brain abscesses was evaluated by the ophthalmology service. The patient's visual acuity was 20/20 OU without relative afferent pupillary defect and normal intraocular pressures. Bedside anterior segment examination was normal. Posterior segment examination revealed intraretinal hemorrhages and Roth spots in the posterior pole of the right eye, and two deep well-defined focal white chorioretinal infiltrates and a hemorrhagic pigment epithelium detachment in the temporal quadrant of the left eye. Multimodal imaging was utilized to document these findings and ensure adequate antibiotic therapy. Conclusion: SAB has the potential for poor visual outcomes as well as significant morbidity and mortality. Multimodal imaging of SAB-related chorioretinitis allows for accurate diagnosis as well as assessment of response to antimicrobial therapy

Introduction. In this retrospective study we evaluated the multimodal visualization of retinal genetic diseases to better understand their natural course. Material and Methods. We reviewed the charts of 70 consecutive patients with different genetic retinal pathologies who had previously undergone multimodal imaging analyses. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood and genotyped at the known locus for the different diseases. Results. The medical records of 3 families of a 4-generation pedigree affected by North Carolina macular dystrophy were reviewed. A total of 8 patients with Stargardt disease were evaluated for their two main defining clinical characteristics, yellow subretinal flecks and central atrophy. Nine male patients with a previous diagnosis of choroideremia and eleven female carriers were evaluated. Fourteen patients with Best vitelliform macular dystrophy and 6 family members with autosomal recessive bestrophinopathy were included. Seven patients with enhanced s-cone syndrome were ascertained. Lastly, we included 3 unrelated patients with fundus albipunctatus. Conclusions. In hereditary retinal diseases, clinical examination is often not sufficient for evaluating the patient's condition. Retinal imaging then becomes important in making the diagnosis, in monitoring the progression of disease, and as a surrogate outcome measure of the efficacy of an intervention
