Using the Theory of Signal Detection to Improve Ad Recognition Testing.

Unfortunately the recognition scores obtained by current methods reflect both the memory for an advertisement and the response biases of the respondents. The authors introduce the theory of signal detection (TSD) which can be used to secure independent estimates of memory and response bias in recognition tests. Recognition versus recall as measures of television commercial forgetting.

Copyright 1993 by the American Marketing Association.Investigated the impact of time since exposure, commercial length, and commercial repetition on recognition and unaided recall scores, using 204 undergraduates. Ss were randomly assigned to 12 experimental cells and asked to recall the product category, brand name, and claims for commercials they viewed; similarly 9-alternative verbal recognition tests were used. Results indicate that recognition scores were not indiscriminately high, as commonly is argued and that they declined with time, contrary to what often is assumed. The data show that recognition scores were more sensitive and more discriminating than, and covaried with, unaided recall scores. It is suggested that recognition and recall warrant more consideration by advertisers. Findings are compared to an earlier study by the 1st 2 authors (see record 1984-05496-001). A Survey of UV Bright Sources Behind the Halo of M31
We have performed a wide-area ultraviolet (UV) imaging survey using the
GALaxy Evolution eXplorer (GALEX) to search for bright, point-like UV sources
behind M31's extended halo. Our survey consisted of 46 pointings covering an
effective area of ~50 deg^2, in both the far-UV and near-UV channels. We
combined these data with optical R-band observations acquired with the WIYN
Mosaic-1 imager on the Kitt Peak National Observatory 0.9m WIYN telescope. An
analysis of the brightness and colors of sources matched between our
photometric catalogs yielded ~100 UV-bright quasar candidates. We have obtained
discovery spectra for 76 of these targets with the Kast spectrometer on the
Lick 3m telescope and confirm 30 active galactic nuclei and quasars, 29
galaxies at z > 0.02 including several early-type systems, 16 Galactic stars
(hot main-sequence stars), and one featureless source previously identified as
a BL Lac object. Future UV spectroscopy of the brightest targets with the
Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope will enable a

SHRINE: Enabling Nationally Scalable Multi-Site Disease Studies
Results of medical research studies are often contradictory or cannot be reproduced. One reason is that there may not be enough patient subjects available for observation for a long enough time period. Another reason is that patient populations may vary considerably with respect to geographic and demographic boundaries thus limiting how broadly the results apply. Even when similar patient populations are pooled together from multiple locations, differences in medical treatment and record systems can limit which outcome measures can be commonly analyzed. In total, these differences in medical research settings can lead to differing conclusions or can even prevent some studies from starting. We thus sought to create a patient research system that could aggregate as many patient observations as possible from a large number of hospitals in a uniform way. We call this system the ‘Shared Health Research Information Network’, with the following properties: (1) reuse electronic health data from everyday clinical care for research purposes, (2) respect patient privacy and hospital autonomy, (3) aggregate patient populations across many hospitals to achieve statistically significant sample sizes that can be validated independently of a single research setting, (4) harmonize the observation facts recorded at each institution such that queries can be made across many hospitals in parallel, (5) scale to regional and national collaborations. The purpose of this report is to provide open source software for multi-site clinical studies and to report on early uses of this application. At this time SHRINE implementations have been used for multi-site studies of autism co-morbidity, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, peripartum cardiomyopathy, colorectal cancer, diabetes, and others. The wide range of study objectives and growing adoption suggest that SHRINE may be applicable beyond the research uses and participating hospitals named in this report
COBRA framework to evaluate e-government services: A citizen-centric perspective
E-government services involve many stakeholders who have different objectives that can have an impact on success. Among these stakeholders, citizens are the primary stakeholders of government activities. Accordingly, their satisfaction plays an important role in e-government success. Although several models have been proposed to assess the success of e-government services through measuring users' satisfaction levels, they fail to provide a comprehensive evaluation model. This study provides an insight and critical analysis of the extant literature to identify the most critical factors and their manifested variables for user satisfaction in the provision of e-government services. The various manifested variables are then grouped into a new quantitative analysis framework consisting of four main constructs: cost; benefit; risk and opportunity (COBRA) by analogy to the well-known SWOT qualitative analysis framework. The COBRA measurement scale is developed, tested, refined and validated on a sample group of e-government service users in Turkey. A structured equation model is used to establish relationships among the identified constructs, associated variables and users' satisfaction. The results confirm that COBRA framework is a useful approach for evaluating the success of e-government services from citizens' perspective and it can be generalised to other perspectives and measurement contexts. Acupuncture, or non-directive counselling versus usual care for the treatment of depression: a pilot study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Depression is one of the most common reasons for consulting in primary care. Acupuncture is a popular complementary therapy choice for depression but its evidence base is poor with more robust high quality trials being required. More than half of depressed patients experience painful symptoms, with severe pain being associated with poor response to antidepressants. Acupuncture may have much to offer as an intervention for depression that also helps alleviate pain. Non-directive counselling is the most widely used psychological approach for depression in NHS settings, and provides a useful pragmatic comparison for acupuncture that would, according to our pre-trial qualitative research, be of high interest to doctors and patients.</p> <p>Methods and design</p> <p>The pilot study uses five arms and involves a pragmatic design. All patients will continue to receive usual care. Four groups of patients will be allocated to acupuncture, or non-directive counselling, in addition to usual GP care. The acupuncture and counselling arms will be further split into two groups to explore different treatment regimens. The primary outcome measure is the BDI II. Potentially eligible patients will be screened for depression using the PHQ-9, which is also a secondary outcome measure. Other secondary measures include the SF 36 bodily pain subscale, the CORE OM, the WBQ-12 and the EQ5D. Health economic data will be collected and measures of therapeutic engagement will be used to compare patient's views of therapists and GPs. The study will employ a fully randomised preference design with collection of data on patient preferences and prior expectations.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>This study has been implemented, and data are currently being analysed to inform the design of a full scale trial. Two practical operational issues that impacted on study implementation are discussed. Firstly, the challenge of recruiting depressed patients via GP consultation. Secondly, the problem of poor uptake and high attrition for counselling and acupuncture, which appeared to be associated with poor questionnaire return, and resulted in missing data. These problems may be relevant to other researchers working in the area of depression, or similar illnesses, where patients may lack motivation and energy to engage in research, or attend for treatment.</p> <p>Trial Registration</p> <p>Current Controlled Trials (ISRCTN 59267538)</p
Coordinated Expression Domains in Mammalian Genomes
Gene order in eukaryotic genomes is not random. Genes showing similar expression (coexpression) patterns are often clustered along the genome. The goal of this study is to characterize coexpression clustering in mammalian genomes and to investigate the underlying mechanisms.We detect clustering of coexpressed genes across multiple scales, from neighboring genes to chromosomal domains that span tens of megabases and, in some cases, entire chromosomes. Coexpression domains may be positively or negatively correlated with other domains, within and between chromosomes. We find that long-range expression domains are associated with gene density, which in turn is related to physical organization of the chromosomes within the nucleus. We show that gene expression changes between healthy and diseased tissue samples occur in a gene density-dependent manner.We demonstrate that coexpression domains exist across multiple scales. We identify potential mechanisms for short-range as well as long-range coexpression domains. We provide evidence that the three-dimensional architecture of the chromosomes may underlie long-range coexpression domains. Chromosome territory reorganization may play a role in common human diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and psoriasis
