C*-Algebras with the Approximate Positive Factorization Property
We say that a unital C*-algrebra A has the approximate positive factorization
property (APFP) if every element of A is a norm limit of products of positive
elements of A. (There is also a definition for the nonunital case.) T. Quinn
has recently shown that a unital AF algebra has the APFP if and only if it has
no finite dimensional quotients. This paper is a more systematic investigation
of C*-algebras with the APFP. We prove various properties of such algebras. For
example: They have connected invertible group, trivial K_1, and stable rank 1.
In the unital case, the K_0 group separates the tracial states. The APFP passes
to matrix algebras. and if I is an ideal in A such that I and A/I have the
APFP, then so does A. We also give some new examples of C*-algebras with the
APFP, including type II_1 factors and infinite-dimensional simple unital direct
limits with slow dimension growth, real rank zero, and trivial K_1 group. An
infinite- dimensional simple unital direct limit with slow dimension growth and
with the APFP must have real rank zero, but we also give examples of unital
algebras with the APFP which do not have real rank zero.
Our analysis also leads to the introduction of a new concept of rank for a
C*-algebra that may be of interest in the future.Comment: plain TeX; 19 page
Computed tomographic imaging characteristics of the normal canine lacrimal glands.
BackgroundThe canine lacrimal gland (LG) and accessory lacrimal gland of the third eyelid (TEG) are responsible for production of the aqueous portion of the precorneal tear film. Immune-mediated, toxic, neoplastic, or infectious processes can affect the glands directly or can involve adjacent tissues, with secondary gland involvement. Disease affecting these glands can cause keratoconjunctivitis sicca, corneal ulcers, and loss of vision. Due to their location in the orbit, these small structures are difficult to evaluate and measure, making cross-sectional imaging an important diagnostic tool. The detailed cross-sectional imaging appearance of the LG and TEG in dogs using computed tomography (CT) has not been reported to date.ResultsForty-two dogs were imaged, and the length, width, and height were measured and the volume calculated for the LGs & TEGs. The glands were best visualized in contrast-enhanced CT images. The mean volume of the LG was 0.14 cm3 and the TEG was 0.1 cm3. The mean height, width, and length of the LG were, 9.36 mm, 4.29 mm, and 9.35 mm, respectively; the corresponding values for the TEG was 2.02 mm, 9.34 mm, and 7.90 mm. LG and TEG volume were positively correlated with body weight (p < 0.05).ConclusionsContrast-enhanced CT is a valuable tool for noninvasive assessment of canine lacrimal glands
Exact 1-D Model for Coherent Synchrotron Radiation with Shielding and Bunch Compression
Coherent Synchrotron Radiation has been studied effectively using a
1-dimensional model for the charge distribution in the realm of small angle
approximations and high energies. Here we use Jefimenko's form of Maxwell's
equations, without such approximations, to calculate the exact wake-fields due
to this effect in multiple bends and drifts. It has been shown before that the
influence of a drift can propagate well into a subsequent bend. We show, for
reasonable parameters, that the influence of a previous bend can also propagate
well into a subsequent bend, and that this is especially important at the
beginning of a bend. Shielding by conducting parallel plates is simulated using
the image charge method. We extend the formalism to situations with compressing
and decompressing distributions, and conclude that simpler approximations to
bunch compression usually overestimates the effect. Additionally, an exact
formula for the coherent power radiated by a Gaussian bunch is derived by
considering the coherent synchrotron radiation spectrum, and is used to check
the accuracy of wake-field calculations
The intrinsic stiffness of human trabecular meshwork cells increases with senescence.
Dysfunction of the human trabecular meshwork (HTM) plays a central role in the age-associated disease glaucoma, a leading cause of irreversible blindness. The etiology remains poorly understood but cellular senescence, increased stiffness of the tissue, and the expression of Wnt antagonists such as secreted frizzled related protein-1 (SFRP1) have been implicated. However, it is not known if senescence is causally linked to either stiffness or SFRP1 expression. In this study, we utilized in vitro HTM senescence to determine the effect on cellular stiffening and SFRP1 expression. Stiffness of cultured cells was measured using atomic force microscopy and the morphology of the cytoskeleton was determined using immunofluorescent analysis. SFRP1 expression was measured using qPCR and immunofluorescent analysis. Senescent cell stiffness increased 1.88±0.14 or 2.57±0.14 fold in the presence or absence of serum, respectively. This was accompanied by increased vimentin expression, stress fiber formation, and SFRP1 expression. In aggregate, these data demonstrate that senescence may be a causal factor in HTM stiffening and elevated SFRP1 expression, and contribute towards disease progression. These findings provide insight into the etiology of glaucoma and, more broadly, suggest a causal link between senescence and altered tissue biomechanics in aging-associated diseases
Note-Taking Mode and Academic Performance in Two Law School Courses
The use of laptops in law school classrooms has become fairly commonplace, especially in the last decade. Yet, studies in other higher education settings have found an association between note-taking mode and academic performance; specifically, using a laptop to take notes in the classroom is associated with negative academic performance outcomes.
This study endeavors to assess the relationship between note-taking mode and academic performance in the law school setting. We compare the academic performance of handwriters to laptop users in two required, doctrinal courses as well as the effect of a randomly assigned treatment, exposing roughly half of the students in our analysis to a memorandum explaining the possible pitfalls of using a laptop to take class notes. We find that handwriting class notes has a strong positive association with academic performance in these two law school courses, supporting findings of the benefits of handwriting class notes in other academic settings
