    Dengue Fever

    Get PDF
In recent years, the transmission of dengue fever has increased surprisingly fast and has become a major international public health concern. As of today this disease has mainly affected large countries and has become a leading cause of hospitalization and death among children in the certain areas. The amount of people that have got this infection has dramatically increase in recent decades. Over 40% of the world’s population are currently at risk of getting Dengue Fever. There is now an estimate of 50-100 million people that catch this disease every year (World Health Organization, 2002)

Quality of schooling and quality of schools for indigenous students in Guatemala, Mexico, and Peru

A substantial gap in test scores exists between indigenous and non-indigenous students in Latin America. Using test score data for 3rd and 4th yearprimary school pupils in Guatemala and Peru, and 5th grade pupils in Mexico, the authors assess the magnitude of the indigenous and non-indigenous test score gap and identify the main family and school inputs contributing to the gap. A decomposition of the gap into its constituent components suggests that the proportion that is explained by family and school characteristics is between 41 and 75 percent of the overall test-score gap. Furthermore, family variables contribute more than school variables to the overall explained component.Tertiary Education,Secondary Education,Primary Education,Teaching and Learning,Education For All

Comparative Analysis of Eating Patterns of Individuals With Obese Vs. Normal BMI and With and Without Type 2 Diabetes

    Get PDF
This study explored eating patterns of obese-weight (OB) and normal-weight (NW) individuals with and without Type 2 diabetes (T2D). The dietary intakes of OB-T2D individuals were significantly higher than those of NW individuals. Health care professionals can use this knowledge to provide direction for treatment modalities (e.g., different dietary strategies, more intensive dietary therapy, lifestyle counseling).https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/archivedposters/1149/thumbnail.jp

Building an Evaluation Framework for The Smith Center’s Education & Outreach Department

The Smith Center, Clark County’s premier performing arts center, offers professional development opportunities through their Education and Outreach Department to teach local educators how to incorporate arts integration strategies into their classrooms. Research has shown that arts education, particularly in the form of arts integration, can bolster student achievement, increase student engagement and motivation, develop critical and creative thinking patterns, and boost social competences, such as collaboration and self-confidence. Given the great possibility of improving student achievement via arts integration and the poor educational outcomes that the Clark County School District has been struggling with for years, The Smith Center’s professional development program has much to offer Southern Nevada

The Use of Transfer Learning for Activity Recognition in Instances of Heterogeneous Sensing

    Get PDF
Transfer learning is a growing field that can address the variability of activity recognition problems by reusing the knowledge from previous experiences to recognise activities from different conditions, resulting in the leveraging of resources such as training and labelling efforts. Although integrating ubiquitous sensing technology and transfer learning seem promising, there are some research opportunities that, if addressed, could accelerate the development of activity recognition. This paper presents TL-FmRADLs; a framework that converges the feature fusion strategy with a teacher/learner approach over the active learning technique to automatise the self-training process of the learner models. Evaluation TL-FmRADLs is conducted over InSync; an open access dataset introduced for the first time in this paper. Results show promising effects towards mitigating the insufficiency of labelled data available by enabling the learner model to outperform the teacher’s performance
