Spectro-photometric Evolution of Elliptical Galaxies. II. Models with infall
In this paper we present new chemo-spectro-photometric models of elliptical
galaxies in which infall of primordial gas is allowed to occur. They aim to
simulate the collapse of a galaxy made of two components, i.e. luminous
material and dark matter. The mass of the dark component is assumed to be
constant in time, whereas that of the luminous material is supposed to accrete
at a suitable rate. They also include the effect of galactic winds powered by
supernova explosions and stellar winds from massive, early-type stars. The
models are constrained to match a number of properties of elliptical galaxies,
i.e. the slope and mean colours of the colour-magnitude relation (CMR), V
versus (V--K), the UV excess as measured by the colour (1550--V) together with
the overall shape of the integrated spectral energy distribution (ISED) in the
ultraviolet, the relation between the Mg2 index and (1550--V), the mass to blue
luminosity ratio M/Lb as a function of the B luminosity, and finally the

Fat-enriched diet is strongly associated with cataract development. Laurus nobilis shows antioxidant activity. Herein we evaluated the effect of Laurus nobilis oral administration on the blood and lenses antioxidant activity in rabbits under fat-enriched diet. Sixty rabbits divided into 4 groups were used. One group represented the control (N-CTR). The second group (P-CTR) fed a diet supplemented with 2.5 % of pig fat; the third group (EXP1) received a diet supplemented with 2.5 % of pig fat and 1 g/kg of dried-bay leaves; the fourth group (EXP2) was treated with dried-bay leaves at the rate of 1 g/kg of feed. At baseline and at the end of the study (56 days) the following blood parameters were determined: thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), reactive oxygen metabolites (ROMs), total phenols, superoxide dismutase (SOD), oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORACpca), ferric ion reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), retinol and alfa-tocopherol. At the end of the follow-up, the eyes were enucleated and the antioxidant profile, such as total antioxidant activity (TAC), TBARS, retinol and alfa-tocopherol of lenses was evaluated. Plasma ROMs and TBARS levels were statistically lower in the groups receiving bay leaves integration. A significant increase of plasma retinol, FRAP and ORACpca levels was found in EXP1 and EXP2 groups, whereas plasma alfa-tocopherol resulted statistically higher only in EXP2 group. Bay leaves supplementation enhanced TAC, retinol and alfa-tocopherol in rabbit lens, particularly in EXP2 group; whereas lenses TBARS levels significantly decreased in both treated groups. These findings demonstrate that Laurus nobilis oral administration exerts a protective effect on the risk of cataract development in rabbits under fat-enriched diet

Testing intermediate-age stellar evolution models with VLT photometry of LMC clusters. I. The data
This is the first of a series of three papers devoted to the calibration of a
few parameters of crucial importance in the modeling of the evolution of
intermediate-mass stars, with special attention to the amount of convective
core overshoot. To this end we acquired deep V and R photometry for three
globular clusters of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), namely NGC 2173, SL 556
and NGC 2155, in the age interval 1-3 Gyr. In this first paper, we describe the
aim of the project, the VLT observations and data reduction, and we make
preliminary comparisons of the color-magnitude diagrams with both Padova and
Yonsei-Yale isochrones. Two following papers in this series present the results
of a detailed analysis of these data, independently carried out by members of
the Yale and Padova stellar evolution groups. This allows us to compare both
sets of models and discuss their main differences, as well as the systematic
effects that they would have to the determination of the ages and metallicities

A simple and general method for solving detailed chemical evolution with delayed production of iron and other chemical elements

All rights reserved.We present a theoretical method for solving the chemical evolution of galaxies by assuming an instantaneous recycling approximation for chemical elements restored by massive stars and the delay time distribution formalism for delayed chemical enrichment by Type Ia Supernovae. The galaxy gas mass assembly history, together with the assumed stellar yields and initial mass function, represents the starting point of this method. We derive a simple and general equation, which closely relates the Laplace transforms of the galaxy gas accretion history and star formation history, which can be used to simplify the problem of retrieving these quantities in the galaxy evolution models assuming a linear Schmidt–Kennicutt law. We find that – once the galaxy star formation history has been reconstructed from our assumptions – the differential equation for the evolution of the chemical element X can be suitably solved with classical methods. We apply our model to reproduce the [O/Fe] and [Si/Fe] versus [Fe/H] chemical abundance patterns as observed at the solar neighbourhood by assuming a decaying exponential infall rate of gas and different delay time distributions for Type Ia Supernovae; we also explore the effect of assuming a non-linear Schmidt–Kennicutt law, with the index of the power law being k = 1.4. Although approximate, we conclude that our model with the singledegenerate scenario for Type Ia Supernovae provides the best agreement with the observed set of data. Our method can be used by other complementary galaxy stellar population synthesis models to predict also the chemical evolution of galaxies.Peer reviewe
Astrophysical properties of binary star clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud
To study the evolution of binary star clusters we have imaged 7 systems in
the Small Magellanic Cloud with SOAR 4-m telescope using B and V filters. The
sample contains pairs with well-separated components (d < 30 pc) as well as
systems that apparently merged, as evidenced by their unusual structures. By
employing isochrone fittings to their CMDs we have determined reddening, age
and metallicity and by fitting King models to their radial stellar density
profile we have estimated core radius. Disturbances of the density profile are
interpreted as an evidence of interaction. Circunstances as distances between
components and their age difference are addressed in terms of the timescales
involved to access the physical connection of the system. In two cases the age
difference is above 50 Myr, which suggests chance alignment, capture or

Young Clusters in the Magellanic Clouds II
We present the results of a quantitative study of the degree of extension to
the boundary of the classical convective core within intermediate mass stars.
The basis of our empirical study is the stellar population of four young
populous clusters in the Magellanic Clouds which has been detailed in Keller,
Bessell & Da Costa (2000). The sample affords a meaningful comparison with
theoretical scenarios with varying degrees of convective core overshoot and
binary star fraction. Two critical properties of the population, the
main-sequence luminosity function and the number of evolved stars, form the
basis of our comparison between the observed data set and that simulated from
the stellar evolutionary models. On the basis of this comparison we conclude
that the case of no convective core overshoot is excluded at a 2 sigma level.Comment: 27 pages, 12 figures, AJ accepte
Nonlinear models of the bump cepheid HV 905 and the distance modulus to the large magellanic cloud
Nonlinear pulsation models have been used to simulate the light curve of the LMC bump Cepheid HV 905. In order to reproduce the light curve accurately, tight constraints on the input parameters M, L, and T-eff are required. The results, combined with accurate existing V and I photometry, yield an LMC distance modulus of 18.51 +/- 0.05, and they show that the luminosity of HV 905 is much higher than expected from the mass-luminosity relation of stellar evolution theory. If we assume that the pulsation models are accurate, this suggests that there is a larger amount of convective core overshoot during the main-sequence evolution of stars with M similar to 5 M. than is usually assumed
The Evolution of Massive Stars. I. Red Supergiants in the Magellanic Clouds
We investigate the red supergiant (RSG) content of the SMC and LMC using
multi-object spectroscopy on a sample of red stars previously identified by
{\it BVR} CCD photometry. We obtained high accuracy ( km s) radial
velocities for 118 red stars seen towards the SMC and 167 red stars seen
towards the LMC, confirming most of these (89% and 95%, respectively) as red
supergiants (RSGs). Spectral types were also determined for most of these RSGs.
We find that the distribution of spectral types is skewed towards earlier type
at lower metallicities: the average (median) spectral type is K5-7 I in the
SMC, M1 I in the LMC, and M2 I in the Milky Way. We argue that RSGs in the
Magellanic Clouds are 100deg (LMC) and 300deg (SMC) cooler than Galactic RSGs
of the same spectral type. We compare the distribution of RSGs in the H-R
diagram to that of various stellar evolutionary models; we find that none of
the models produce RSGs as cool and luminous as what is actually observed. In
all of our H-R diagrams, however, there is an elegant sequence of decreasing
effective temperatures with increasing luminosities; explaining this will be an
important test of future stellar evolutionary models.Comment: Version with eps figures embedded can be obtained from
