    AbstractAcute aortic dissection is an uncommon but life-threatening emergency, which is often missed in up to 38% of patients on initial evaluation, and in up to 28% of patients the diagnosis is made at autopsy. Painless aortic dissection has been reported, but is relatively uncommon. The mortality rates are estimated at 50% by 48 hours and increase by 1% per hour if undiagnosed. We report a case of atypical aortic dissection who presented to ER with subtle unspecific renal colicky like pain as a primary symptom, which had made the prompt diagnosis very challenging and difficult

    Cytokine Profile in Plasma Extracellular Vesicles of Parkinson's Disease and the Association with Cognitive Function

    Plasma extracellular vesicles (EVs) containing various molecules, including cytokines, can reflect the intracellular condition and participate in cell-to-cell signaling, thus emerging as biomarkers for Parkinson’s disease (PD). Inflammation may be a crucial risk factor for PD development and progression. The present study investigated the role of plasma EV cytokines as the biomarkers of PD. This cross-sectional study recruited 113 patients with PD, with mild to moderate stage disease, and 48 controls. Plasma EVs were isolated, and the levels of cytokines, including pro-interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1, were evaluated. Patients with PD had significantly increased plasma EV pro-IL-1β and TNF-α levels compared with controls after adjustment for age and sex. Despite the lack of a significant association between plasma EV cytokines and motor symptom severity in patients with PD, cognitive dysfunction severity, assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment, was significantly associated with plasma EV pro-IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, and TNF-α levels. This association was PD specific and not found in controls. Furthermore, patients with PD cognitive deficit (MMSE < 26) exhibited a distinguished EV cytokine profile compared to those without cognitive deficit. The findings support the concept of inflammatory pathogenesis in the development and progression of PD and indicate that plasma EV cytokines may serve as PD biomarkers in future

    Self‐potential ambient noise and spectral relationship with urbanization, seismicity, and strain rate revealed via the Taiwan Geoelectric Monitoring Network

    AbstractGeoelectric self‐potential (SP) signals are sensitive to natural and anthropogenic factors. The SP spectral characteristics under the different factors in Taiwan were investigated, and the SP spectral scalings were correlated with urbanization level, seismicity, and crustal deformation. The ambient SP noise models were first established by estimating the probability density functions of the spectrograms at each frequency. The effects of the natural and anthropogenic factors on the SP signals are understood by comparing the SP noise models under various conditions, such as precipitation, urbanization, and electric trains. Results show that the SP signals in areas of high industrialization and human activity and areas close to train stations behave as white noises and exhibit a distinct spectral ripple at frequencies around 1 Hz. On the other hand, the SP spectral power law parameters, Gutenberg‐Richter b values, and dilation strain rates were estimated by using the SP, earthquake catalog, and GPS data, respectively, during 2012–2017. By investigating the correlations of the SP spectral parameters with the Gutenberg‐Richter b value, dilation strain rates, and urbanization level, the SP optimal frequency band is found between 0.006 and 1 Hz due to the high correlation between the SP and seismicity data and between the SP and dilation data and the low correlation between the SP and urbanization data. Hence, this study may help the filtering and screening of the SP data and facilitate the understanding of the mechano‐electric behavior in the crust

    Tracking and Following Algorithms of Mobile Robots for Service Activities in Dynamic Environments

    By providing the capability of following a human target in an appropriate manner, the robot can assist people in various ways under different environments. One of the main difficulties when performing human tracking and following is the occlusion problem caused by static as well as dynamic obstacles. The aim of the paper is to tackle the occlusion problem by planning a robotic trajectory of maximizing target visibility and following the moving target. Initially, a laser range finder is used to detect the human target and then robustly track the target using the Kalman filter. Afterward, a human following algorithm based on a look-ahead algorithm, DWA*, is implemented to pursue the target while avoiding any static or dynamic obstacles. Fundamental experiments have been extensively tested to evaluate robot maneuvers and several field tests are conducted in more complex environments such as student cafeteria, computer center, and university library.</span

    Phase-controlled vibrational laser percussion drilling

    In this study, a phase-controlled vibration was applied to a laser percussion drilling process to improve the depth of penetration. To investigate the effects of phase-controlled vibration on the depth of penetration, a novel method that controls the phase offset between the accelerating motion and the emission of the laser beam was developed. The method is based on coaxial sensing of the working surface using a photodiode, coupled with microcontroller control of the drilling laser operation. Through real-time optical signal acquisition and analysis of laser machining processes, correlations between the accelerating motion and the emission of the laser beam were simultaneously obtained. All of the processing work was performed in air at standard atmospheric conditions, and gas assist was not used. This study showed that the application of phase-controlled vibration improved the depth of penetration in laser percussion machining and can contribute to the development of precision drilling in the industry
