    Protein Disordered Region Prediction by SVM with Post-Processing

    [[abstract]]In proteomics, a proteinpsilas function is always strongly related to its structure. But, while some parts of a protein have a fixed definite structure, such as alpha-helix, beta-sheet, or coil, other parts are not associated with well-defined conformations. Previously, these so-called disordered regions were not thought to have a specific function of their own. But, recent studies suggest that some disordered regions may have important signaling or regulatory functions. In addition, some critical diseases are strongly related to these disordered regions. Hence, prediction of these disordered regions is essential. In this paper, we try to use the support vector machine (SVM) to predict the disordered regions. Furthermore, this paper emphasizes post processing of the SVM prediction results. Two post-processing algorithms are introduced. These algorithms are used to smooth the primary results by SVM. Different from other studies, these smoothing steps are related to the neighborspsila distance to the candidate node.     Psychosocial Determinants of Insomnia in Adolescents: Roles of Mental Health, Behavioral Health, and Social Environment

    The theoretical explanation of human problems is derived from the complex interplay of psychological, social, economic, political, and physical factors. Aims: This study examined the roles of behavioral health (i.e., alcohol abuse and suicidality) and social environment (i.e., family support, school connectedness, and favorable neighborhood) and mental health [i.e., depression, anxiety, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)] in predicting insomnia in adolescents in an ecological perspective. Methods: Approximately 6445 high school students in Taiwan were administered an anonymous self-report survey. Hierarchical multiple regression was performed to examine how multidimensional social environment, behavioral health, and mental health factors were associated with insomnia in adolescents. Results: The prevalence rate of insomnia in the sample was 30%. The results indicated that alcohol abuse (β = 0.04), suicidality (β = 0.06), depression (β = 0.29), anxiety (β = 0.14), and ADHD (β = 0.11) were positively associated with insomnia (p \u3c 0.001), whereas family support (β = −0.06), school connectedness (β = −0.05), and favorable neighborhood (β = −0.10) were negatively associated with insomnia (p \u3c 0.001). Sex did not predict insomnia, but age was positively associated with insomnia (β = 0.09, p \u3c 0.001). Among all predictors of insomnia in the study, mental health factors, especially depression, play a major role on insomnia among adolescents, and is as much important as social environment factors. Conclusion: This study demonstrated how both psychosocial variables (social environment and behavioral health) and psychological symptoms were associated with insomnia in adolescents when the demographic variables (sex and age) were controlled and provided valuable information and evidence for clinicians, social workers, and health professionals who provide support to adolescents with insomnia. Applying an ecological approach in practice can aid in understanding at individual, family, school, and community levels and in identifying the strengths and weaknesses of their interactions with each other. Implications: This perspective enables practitioners in effectively treating problems and addressing the needs of the various levels, including the individual, family, school, and the broader community. Thus, prevention and intervention of insomnia in adolescents should focus on multidimensional risk and protective factors, including mental health, behavioral health, and social environment, in the context of an ecological system

    Cooperative Multi-Objective Reinforcement Learning for Traffic Signal Control and Carbon Emission Reduction

    Existing traffic signal control systems rely on oversimplified rule-based methods, and even RL-based methods are often suboptimal and unstable. To address this, we propose a cooperative multi-objective architecture called Multi-Objective Multi-Agent Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (MOMA-DDPG), which estimates multiple reward terms for traffic signal control optimization using age-decaying weights. Our approach involves two types of agents: one focuses on optimizing local traffic at each intersection, while the other aims to optimize global traffic throughput. We evaluate our method using real-world traffic data collected from an Asian country's traffic cameras. Despite the inclusion of a global agent, our solution remains decentralized as this agent is no longer necessary during the inference stage. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of MOMA-DDPG, outperforming state-of-the-art methods across all performance metrics. Additionally, our proposed system minimizes both waiting time and carbon emissions.     Deep Learning to Improve the Sensitivity of Di-Higgs Searches in the 4b4b Channel

    The study of di-Higgs events, both resonant and non-resonant, plays a crucial role in understanding the fundamental interactions of the Higgs boson. In this work we consider di-Higgs events decaying into four bb-quarks and propose to improve the experimental sensitivity by utilizing a novel machine learning algorithm known as Symmetry Preserving Attention Network (\textsc{Spa-Net}) -- a neural network structure whose architecture is designed to incorporate the inherent symmetries in particle reconstruction tasks. We demonstrate that the \textsc{Spa-Net} can enhance the experimental reach over baseline methods such as the cut-based and the Deep Neural Networks (DNN)-based analyses. At the Large Hadron Collider, with a 14-TeV centre-of-mass energy and an integrated luminosity of 300 fb1^{-1}, the \textsc{Spa-Net} allows us to establish 95\% C.L. upper limits in resonant production cross-sections that are 10\% to 45\% stronger than baseline methods. For non-resonant di-Higgs production, \textsc{Spa-Net} enables us to constrain the self-coupling that is 9\% more stringent than the baseline method

    Development and Validation of the Parents\u27 Perceived Self-Efficacy to Manage Children\u27s Internet Use Scale for Parents of Adolescents with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

    Background and aims: This study developed and validated the Parents’ Perceived Self-Efficacy to Manage Children’s Internet Use Scale (PSMIS) in the parents of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Methods: In total, 231 parents of children with ADHD were invited to complete the PSMIS, followed by the Chen Internet Addiction Scale and the short version of Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham, Version IV Scale – Chinese version for analyzing Internet addiction severity and ADHD symptoms, respectively. Results: The results of exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses confirmed the four-factor structure of the 18-item PSMIS. The significant difference in the levels of parents’ perceived self-efficacy between the parents of children with and without Internet addiction supported the criterion-related validity of the PSMIS. The internal consistency and 1-month test–retest reliability were acceptable. Conclusion: The results indicate that the PSMIS has acceptable validity and reliability and can be used for measuring parents’ perceived self-efficacy to manage children’s Internet use among parents of children with ADHD

    Seismic analysis of the condensate storage tank in a nuclear power plant

    Following the nuclear power plant accident in Fukushima Japan, seismic capacity evaluation has become a crucial issue in combination building safety. Condensate storage tanks are designed to supplies water to the condensate transfer pumps, the control rod drive hydraulic system pumps, and the condenser makeup. A separate connection to the condensate storage tank is used to supply water for the high pressure coolant injection system, reactor core isolation cooling system, and core spray system pumps. A condensate storage tank is defined as a seismic class I structure, playing the important role of providing flow to the operational system and the required static head for the suction of the condensate transfer pumps and the normal supply pump. According to the latest nuclear safety requirements, soil structure interaction must be considered in all seismic analyses. This study aims to rebuild the computer model of condensate storage tanks in Taiwan using the SAP 2000 program in conjunction with the lumped mass stick model and to evaluate the soil structure interaction by employing the SASSI 2000 program. The differences between the results with the soil structure interaction and spring model are compared via natural frequency and response spectrum curves. This computer model enables engineers to rapidly evaluate the safety margin of condensate storage tank following the occurrence of earthquakes or tsunamis

    Traditional Chinese medicine in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee

    AbstractTo evaluate whether the use of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM; 中醫 zhōng yī) influences symptoms or functional outcomes in patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee (膝關節炎 xī guān jié yán).A systematic review of randomized control trials was conducted. Searches for studies in PubMed that were performed between 1965 and August 2013, and retrieved studies were subjected to reference screening. The types of studies included in our review were 1) placebo-based or comparative studies; 2) open label, single-blinded or double-blinded studies; 3) studies evaluating the efficacy of TCM for treating OA of the knee; and 4) studies evaluating only TCM or combination preparations. Trials were conducted with participants over 18 years of age with knee pain and at least three of the following characteristics: 1) an age greater than 50 years; 2) morning stiffness lasting for fewer than 30 min; 3) a crackling or grating sensation; 4) bony tenderness of the knee; 5) bony enlargement of the knee; or 6) no detectable warmth of the joint to the touch. Studies were rated for risk of bias and graded for quality.After screening, 104 studies that satisfied the eligibility requirements were identified, and only 18 randomized control trials were included in the quantitative and qualitative synthesis. Upon review, we found “moderate-quality” evidence of effects from acupuncture (針灸 zhēn jiǔ) on pain, which was measured using a visual analogue scale, and physical function, which was measured using qigong (氣功 qì gōng) with motion. “Low-quality” evidence was found regarding the effects of acupuncture on physical function, and no evidence was found regarding the effects of herbal medicine on pain or physical function. Herbal patches (藥布 yào bù) appeared to affect pain and physical and function, but these effects were not found to be significant.The initial findings included in this review suggest that acupuncture is a promising intervention according to the primary outcome measure, pain, and qigong with motion is an effective method for treating physical function. However, according to the Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation criteria, only moderate-quality evidence was found in these studies.     Collective Excitations, Nambu-Goldstone Modes and Instability of Inhomogeneous Polariton Condensates

    We study non-equilibrium microcavity-polariton condensates (MPCs) in a harmonic potential trap theoretically. We calculate and analyze the steady state, collective-excitation modes and instability of MPCs. Within excitation modes, there exist Nambu-Goldstone modes that can reveal the pattern of the spontaneous symmetry breaking of MPCs. Bifurcation of the stable and unstable modes is identified in terms of the pumping power and spot size. The unstable mechanism associated with the inward supercurrent flow is characterized by the existence of a supersonic region within the condensate.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figure
