    The influence of localization and materialization of mathematics activities on the indigenous first grade students’ learning effects: Two assessment results

    This research aimed to discuss the indigenous students’ learning effects of mathematics which was based on the self-designed localization and materialization of mathematics activities and had proceeded for one year. The quasi-experimental method was used in this research. There were 58 indigenous first grade students which were divided into three experimental groups (A, B, C) and one control group (D). Experimental instruments embodied written tests and manipulative tests which were designed by researchers according to the indicators proclaimed by Ministry of Education. The main findings were as followed: (1) The influence of localization and materialization of mathematics activities on the indigenous first grade students’ learning effects was limited. (2) According to the result of Paired T-test of the written and manipulative tests, most of scores of manipulative tests were higher written tests

    SummaryObjectiveAcute viral hepatitis C-induced jaundice in pregnancy is very rare and may be fatal. Here, we report a complicated case with acute hepatitis C-induced jaundice in pregnancy with successful managementCase ReportA 27-year-old pregnant woman, gravida 2, para 1, with gestational age of 36 weeks and 5 days, was referred to our hospital due to jaundice and elevated liver enzymes of undetermined cause. She had been suffering from general weakness, diarrhea and vomiting for 1 week, and jaundice with tea-colored urine for 3 days. At our medical center, acute viral hepatitis C-induced jaundice was suspected. Since her general condition deteriorated at 36 weeks and 6 days of gestation, we decided to induce labor. A male baby was born smoothly via the vaginal route, with birth weight 2,857 g, birth length 48.6 cm, and 1- and 5-minute Apgar scores of 7 and 9, respectively. Maternal condition improved dramatically after delivery and her serum liver enzymes and bilirubin levels gradually approached normal ranges.ConclusionMothers and fetuses with acute viral hepatitis C-induced jaundice during pregnancy are at great risk of mortality and morbidity. Timely termination may be one of the choices of treatment when fetal maturity has been reached and the maternal condition has deteriorated

    Detection and Screening of Oral Cancer and Pre-cancerous Lesions

    Oral cancer is a fatal disease, accounting for the fourth highest incidence of malignancy in males and the seventh in females in Taiwan. The relatively high prevalence of oral cancer in Taiwan is mainly because there is a high-risk group of 2.5 million people with the habit of smoking and betel nut chewing. Unfortunately, 50% of new cases in our medical center who present with TNM stage III or IV lesions have a shorter than 5-year survival after treatment. This highlights the need for: (1) early treatment of fresh oral cancer cases; (2) screening of the high-risk population to detect new lesions; (3) careful follow-up of cases after treatment; and (4) detection of occult early neck nodal adenopathy in surgical cases. It is generally accepted that prevention and screening of oral cancer are equally important to treatment due to its location. In this review article, we describe the nature of oral cancer and highlight the various conventional and novel methods of screening for this disease and ongoing important related research. Related literature is reviewed and future work that needs to be done is detailed

    The effectiveness of different health education strategies in people with pre-diabetes: A randomized controlled trial

    Background. People with pre-diabetes often lack knowledge of their risks of developing diabetes. In one of our previous study, Multi-Approach Health Education was shown evidence to be effective on health behavior of reducing risks of developing diabetes. However, which one approach is really effective and efficient need further investigation. Purpose. To examine the effects of different intervention strategies on diabetes prevention knowledge, exercise, dietary behavior, and physiological indicators for people with pre-diabetes. Methods. This was a randomly controlled trial. People who received health examination and were found fasting blood glucose higher than normal, between 100 - 125 mg/dl in 2011 were recruited. Three types of intervention were randomly assigned to 3 groups respectively. The control group (n=51) received a health education lecture. One experimental group (n=48) received the identical lecture plus telephone encouragement. The second experimental group (n=41) received the identical lecture plus a health reminder poster in their daily life. The outcomes were evaluated for the change in knowledge of diabetes prevention, exercise behavior, dietary behavior, and physiological outcomes at 6 and 12 weeks after the lecture of three groups, respectively. Results. Three intervention strategies were equally efficacious at inducing positive behavioral changes but overall the magnitudes of physiological changes were the same. In general, the maximum change in parameters was achieved after 6 weeks and maintained in the second 6 weeks of the study. Conclusions. Educating people with pre-diabetes about their condition can have a positive effect upon their health behaviors. However, education lecture coupled with a telephone follow up or plus educational posters were found no more effective than lecture alone. The lecture alone of health education may be enough for people with pre-diabetes, but the long term effect needs further investigation

    An Improved Vector Quantizer Design Method: the Codebook Reorganization Algorithm

    Abstract Generalized Lloyd Algorithm(GLA) is important in vector quantizer design. It runs fast, but it is sensitive to initial conditions and it may find a local optimum. We propose an improved approach based on GLA, named vector quantized codebook reorganization algorithm (VQCRA). VQCRA finds better codebooks in less time, and is insensitive to initial conditions as compared with GLA.. The experiments are performed on the 10 images extracted from USC-SIPI Image Database. The performance improvement ranges from 7.3% (the size of the codebook is 32) to 46.4% (the size of the codebook is 512)

    Rethinking Backdoor Attacks on Dataset Distillation: A Kernel Method Perspective

    Dataset distillation offers a potential means to enhance data efficiency in deep learning. Recent studies have shown its ability to counteract backdoor risks present in original training samples. In this study, we delve into the theoretical aspects of backdoor attacks and dataset distillation based on kernel methods. We introduce two new theory-driven trigger pattern generation methods specialized for dataset distillation. Following a comprehensive set of analyses and experiments, we show that our optimization-based trigger design framework informs effective backdoor attacks on dataset distillation. Notably, datasets poisoned by our designed trigger prove resilient against conventional backdoor attack detection and mitigation methods. Our empirical results validate that the triggers developed using our approaches are proficient at executing resilient backdoor attacks.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figure

    Inhibitory Effects of Terminalia catappa on UVB-Induced Photodamage in Fibroblast Cell Line

    This study investigated whether Terminalia catappa L. hydrophilic extract (TCLW) prevents photoaging in human dermal fibroblasts after exposure to UVB radiation. TCLW exhibited DPPH free radical scavenging activity and protected erythrocytes against AAPH-induced hemolysis. In the gelatin digestion assay, the rates of collagenase inhibition by TCL methanol extract, TCLW, and its hydrolysates were greater than 100% at the concentration of 1 mg/mL. We found that serial dilutions of TCLW (10–500 μg/mL) inhibited collagenase activity in a dose-dependent manner (82.3% to 101.0%). However, TCLW did not significantly inhibit elastase activity. In addition, TCLW inhibited MMP-1 and MMP-9 protein expression at a concentration of 25 μg/mL and inhibited MMP-3 protein expression at a concentration of 50 μg/mL. TCLW also promoted the protein expression of type I procollagen. We also found that TCLW attenuated the expression of MMP-1, -3, and -9 by inhibiting the phosphorylation of ERK, JNK, and p38. These findings suggest that TCLW increases the production of type I procollagen by inhibiting the activity of MMP-1, -3 and -9, and, therefore, has potential use in anti-aging cosmetics
