    Learned Kernels for Interpretable and Efficient PPG Signal Quality Assessment and Artifact Segmentation

    Photoplethysmography (PPG) provides a low-cost, non-invasive method to continuously monitor various cardiovascular parameters. PPG signals are generated by wearable devices and frequently contain large artifacts caused by external factors, such as motion of the human subject. In order to ensure robust and accurate extraction of physiological parameters, corrupted areas of the signal need to be identified and handled appropriately. Previous methodology relied either on handcrafted feature detectors or signal metrics which yield sub-optimal performance, or relied on machine learning techniques such as deep neural networks (DNN) which lack interpretability and are computationally and memory intensive. In this work, we present a novel method to learn a small set of interpretable convolutional kernels that has performance similar to -- and often better than -- the state-of-the-art DNN approach with several orders of magnitude fewer parameters. This work allows for efficient, robust, and interpretable signal quality assessment and artifact segmentation on low-power devices.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figure

    Satellite Monitoring of Terrestrial Plastic Waste

    Plastic waste is a significant environmental pollutant that is difficult to monitor. We created a system of neural networks to analyze spectral, spatial, and temporal components of Sentinel-2 satellite data to identify terrestrial aggregations of waste. The system works at continental scale. We evaluated performance in Indonesia and detected 374 waste aggregations, more than double the number of sites found in public databases. The same system deployed across twelve countries in Southeast Asia identifies 996 subsequently confirmed waste sites. For each detected site, we algorithmically monitor waste site footprints through time and cross-reference other datasets to generate physical and social metadata. 19% of detected waste sites are located within 200 m of a waterway. Numerous sites sit directly on riverbanks, with high risk of ocean leakage.Comment: 14 pages, 14 figure

    Dehydrosqualene Desaturase as a Novel Target for Anti-Virulence Therapy against Staphylococcus aureus

    Staphylococcus aureus, especially methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), is a life-threatening pathogen in hospital- and community-acquired infections. The golden-colored carotenoid pigment of S. aureus, staphyloxanthin, contributes to the resistance to reactive oxygen species (ROS) and host neutrophil-based killing. Here, we describe a novel inhibitor (NP16) of S. aureus pigment production that reduces the survival of S. aureus under oxidative stress conditions. Carotenoid components analysis, enzyme inhibition, and crtN mutational studies indicated that the molecular target of NP16 is dehydrosqualene desaturase (CrtN). S. aureus treated with NP16 showed increased susceptibility to human neutrophil killing and to innate immune clearance in a mouse infection model. Our study validates CrtN as a novel druggable target in S. aureus and presents a potent and effective lead compound for the development of virulence factor-based therapy against S. aureuspublished_or_final_versio

    Clinical and pathological assessment of different suture techniques for microvascular anastomosis in rat femoral artery

    This study examined the clinical and pathological features after a microvascular anastomosis of a rat femoral artery using four different suture techniques. Sixty Sprage-Dawely rats were divided randomly into 4 groups. Fifteen bisected arteries (one from each animal) in Group I, II, III and IV were sutured with the simple interrupted suture, continuous suture, sleeve suture and cuff suture, respectively. The anastomosis times in Group I, II, III and IV were 28.67, 14.67, 15.47 and 15.93 min, respectively. Immediate bleeding that stopped without intervention (grade I) was observed in 67%, 73% and 60% of the anastomosed vessels in Groups II, III and IV, respectively, while 60% of the vessels in Group I showed light bleeding that was inhibited by gentile pressure (grade II). All vessels examined appeared to be patent at 5 and 15 min after the anastomosis. On the 7th day postoperatively, the vessels of Group I showed the highest patency rate (93%) compared with Groups II (67%), III (73%) and IV (87%). Moreover, there were more pronounced pathological changes in Group I than in the other groups. These changes included endothelial loss, endothelial proliferation, degeneration and necrosis of the tunica media. Suture materials surrounded by an inflammatory reaction were also observed. In conclusion, the simple interrupted suture is preferable for microvascular anastomosis due to its highest patency rate. The other techniques investigated can be good alternatives because of their short anastomotic time and moderate pathological changes

    Observation of intensity squeezing in resonance fluorescence from a solid-state device

    Intensity squeezing i.e. photon number fluctuations below the shot noise limit is a fundamental aspect of quantum optics and has wide applications in quantum metrology. It was predicted in 1979 that the intensity squeezing could be observed in resonance fluorescence from a two-level quantum system. Yet, its experimental observation in solid states was hindered by inefficiencies in generating, collecting and detecting resonance fluorescence. Here, we report the intensity squeezing in a single-mode fibre-coupled resonance fluorescence single-photon source based on a quantum dot-micropillar system. We detect pulsed single-photon streams with 22.6% system efficiency, which show subshot-noise intensity fluctuation with an intensity squeezing of . We estimate a corrected squeezing of at the first lens. The observed intensity squeezing provides the last piece of the fundamental picture of resonance fluorescence; which can be used as a new standard for optical radiation and in scalable quantum metrology with indistinguishable single photons.PostprintPeer reviewe

    Cultural and leadership predictors of corporate social responsibility values of top management: A GLOBE study of 15 countries.

    This paper examines cultural and leadership variables associated with corporate social responsibility values that managers apply to their decision-making. In this longitudinal study, we analyze data from 561 firms located in 15 countries on five continents to illustrate how the cultural dimensions of institutional collectivism and power distance predict social responsibility values on the part of top management team members.     Adapting Rapid Diagnostic Tests to Detect Historical Dengue Virus Infections.

    The only licensed dengue vaccine, Dengvaxia®, increases risk of severe dengue when given to individuals without prior dengue virus (DENV) infection but is protective against future disease in those with prior DENV immunity. The World Health Organization has recommended using rapid diagnostic tests (RDT) to determine history of prior DENV infection and suitability for vaccination. Dengue experts recommend that these assays be highly specific (≥98%) to avoid erroneously vaccinating individuals without prior DENV infection, as well as be sensitive enough (≥95%) to detect individuals with a single prior DENV infection. We evaluated one existing and two newly developed anti-flavivirus RDTs using samples collected >6 months post-infection from individuals in non-endemic and DENV and ZIKV endemic areas. We first evaluated the IgG component of the SD BIOLINE Dengue IgG/IgM RDT, which was developed to assist in confirming acute/recent DENV infections (n=93 samples). When evaluated following the manufacturer's instructions, the SD BIOLINE Dengue RDT had 100% specificity for both non-endemic and endemic samples but low sensitivity for detecting DENV seropositivity (0% non-endemic, 41% endemic). Sensitivity increased (53% non-endemic, 98% endemic) when tests were allowed to run beyond manufacturer recommendations (0.5 up to 3 hours), but specificity decreased in endemic samples (36%). When tests were evaluated using a quantitative reader, optimal specificity could be achieved (≥98%) while still retaining sensitivity at earlier timepoints in non-endemic (44-88%) and endemic samples (31-55%). We next evaluated novel dengue and Zika RDTs developed by Excivion to detect prior DENV or ZIKV infections and reduce cross-flavivirus reactivity (n=207 samples). When evaluated visually, the Excivion Dengue RDT had sensitivity and specificity values of 79%, but when evaluated with a quantitative reader, optimal specificity could be achieved (≥98%) while still maintaining moderate sensitivity (48-75%). The Excivion Zika RDT had high specificity (>98%) and sensitivity (>93%) when evaluated quantitatively, suggesting it may be used alongside dengue RDTs to minimize misclassification due to cross-reactivity. Our findings demonstrate the potential of RDTs to be used for dengue pre-vaccination screening to reduce vaccine-induced priming for severe dengue and show how assay design adaptations as well quantitative evaluation can further improve RDTs for this purpose

    Strategies to improve recruitment to randomised trials

    Background: Recruiting participants to trials can be extremely difficult. Identifying strategies that improve trial recruitment would benefit both trialists and health research. Objectives: To quantify the effects of strategies for improving recruitment of participants to randomised trials. A secondary objective is to assess the evidence for the effect of the research setting (e.g. primary care versus secondary care) on recruitment. Search methods: We searched the Cochrane Methodology Review Group Specialised Register (CMR) in the Cochrane Library (July 2012, searched 11 February 2015); MEDLINE and MEDLINE In Process (OVID) (1946 to 10 February 2015); Embase (OVID) (1996 to 2015 Week 06); Science Citation Index & Social Science Citation Index (ISI) (2009 to 11 February 2015) and ERIC (EBSCO) (2009 to 11 February 2015). Selection criteria: Randomised and quasi-randomised trials of methods to increase recruitment to randomised trials. This includes non-healthcare studies and studies recruiting to hypothetical trials. We excluded studies aiming to increase response rates to questionnaires or trial retention and those evaluating incentives and disincentives for clinicians to recruit participants. Data collection and analysis: We extracted data on: the method evaluated; country in which the study was carried out; nature of the population; nature of the study setting; nature of the study to be recruited into; randomisation or quasi-randomisation method; and numbers and proportions in each intervention group. We used a risk difference to estimate the absolute improvement and the 95% confidence interval (CI) to describe the effect in individual trials. We assessed heterogeneity between trial results.
